Background story:
When the spirits of nature are angered, they are said to take the form of [name] and avenge nature. Sneaking through the morning fog you will rarely catch a glimps of them, until the moment they show their face. then they will club and strangle you with their tentacle-like vines. But you know you're in real trouble when they start making snakelike, almost hypnotic movements with their head...

Design background:
As far as camouflage has any rules, this pattern doesn't follow them too well, pretty much helping to show the form of the body, instead of hiding it like it should. This is of course what details in drawings should do. The idea of a camouflage pattern in general makes sense though, ghosts are often dark because they hide in the dark, so a grassy ghost that hides in nature should have some nature-like colors. The vines/tentacles are the single type of apendage for moving about (on the ground and in the trees), attacking (which goes well with the physical attack specialisation/bias) and probably feeding, although i'm not sure what a vengefull spirit eats exactly. Together with the ghostly body (designed to screw with ones perception of strength and weight) the whirling mass of tentacles also offers Sketchy its good defenses. The ponytail is probably a tad too obvious for a sketch reference, but I still like it enough to leave it in. the wood-like face with purple hair and scary eyes mostly serves to remind you this is a vengefull spirit, cuddling at your own risk.

I call this design "Weeping Willow", and the theme is a sad grande dame actress of silent films. She is immortalized as a weeping willow tree and eternally mourns for her lost art and her faded beauty. She holds her golden masks of Comedy and Tragedy, as a reminder of her days of acting fame and fortune. She is a visage of her movies in stark black and white, and she can only weep in silence, unable to make a sound...

I really wanted to make a distinctly female design. I have long wanted to see us do a true female design on CAP -- like Gardevoir or Jinx in the real game -- and on several past CAPs I have tried to come up with a female design, but nothing ever really clicked for me.

On this CAP, I was trying to think of a female ghost design and started pondering over the idea of faded beauty and past glory. Very quickly I started thinking of Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard, and I thought of a crying old silent film actress. That led me to thinking of a weeping willow tree, which I quickly imagined as the extravagant coat or cape of a grande dame, and it fits the Grass typing wonderfully. The actress theme also perfectly tied into the whole Sketch thing, so I knew I was onto something that might work. Finally I came up with a notion of eerie eyes. Eyes that evoked dual imagery of heavy mascara smeared by crying, and the wide open glare that comes from taut skin of plastic surgery in a vain attempt to maintain the appearance of youth. Yeah, I know it's kinda twisted, but that's how I roll.

I tried to wrap it all up in a cute package, because this is still Pokemon, after all. I hope you like the results.

A long time ago, there was a great silent film actress in Unova who was the most acclaimed actress of her time. It was said she could learn any role instantly and portray it flawlessly. Her acting talent was exceeded only by her legendary beauty, and she amassed great wealth and fame.

But over time, black and white silent movies were replaced by technicolor films with sound, and the actress was no longer in demand for starring roles. As she grew older, her youthful looks gave way to the wrinkles that come with age. Soon the actress was forgotten by the public, and despite all her past successes, the actress became deeply depressed and saddened.

One day, the actress' phone rang. It was a call from a famous movie producer in a faraway land. He claimed to be a great fan of the actress, and was producing a new movie just for her. The new movie would restore her to the headlines, and show the world that she was still a star. The producer arranged for a luxurious ship to bring the actress to the new region where she would be greeted with great fanfare. On the appointed day, the actress put on her finest dress, gathered her belongings and her most prestigious acting awards, and went to the Unova shore. She could barely contain her excitement as she waited for the ship to arrive!

Unfortunately, many hours passed and the ship never came. As night fell, the actress took shelter under a nearby willow tree to protect her from the elements. The next day came and went, and still no ship arrived. The actress waited day after day, refusing to leave the waterside, barely eating or sleeping, waiting for a ship that would never come.

If passers-by came near the actress by the tree, she would frantically ask them if they knew who she was, ask how she looked, and ask if they had seen a luxurious ship that was to carry her away to a faraway land for her to star in a big new movie. Frightened by her gaunt appearance, people would usually run away, leaving the actress to cry by the tree alone every day and night.

No one knows what eventually became of the actress. Many people assume she wasted away and died there by the willow tree. Legend has it that after she died, the spirit of the actress merged with the willow tree.

Many years later, a new breed of pokemon appeared in Unova. It is a ghostly female apparition in black and white, with long willowy leaves, that always carries golden masks. The pokemon is cursed with no mouth, and cannot utter a sound.

Trainers call the pokemon "Weeping Willow", because when the wind blows through its long leaves, it sounds exactly like the sobs of a crying woman. If trainers approach the waters edge in Unova, they will often quickly encounter a Weeping Willow. Although most people assume the pokemon is aggressive and wants to frighten people or attack them, expert Weeping Willow trainers say the pokemon simply wants to get attention and to prove they are beautiful.

When near the shore, Weeping Willows will often gesture out toward the sea, and wander around, apparently desperate for some answer to a question they cannot ask. They are left to weep alone in total silence, save for the cry of the wind through their leaves...

Several people have asked me how Weeping Willow gets her masks. I could dismiss the question, or ask where Gurdurr gets a steel I-beam or whatever. There are all sorts of unexplained things like this in Pokemon. But I have an answer that I think fits nicely with the lore of this sad little pokemon.

"Weeping Willow's golden masks are not made of metal. They are made of shimmering golden amber that comes from resin produced by Willow's body. Weeping Willow is much like a tree, with roots and leaves, and trees secrete resin when their bark is damaged. How does Weeping Willow secrete resin? -- from her tears, of course. When Weeping Willow cries, she cries shimmering golden tears. Her masks are a direct byproduct of her sorrow and regret."

Grande Dame References
I pulled from many sources for visual inspiration. The biggest inspiration was Gloria Swanson in the movie Sunset Boulevard. For those of you unfamiliar with the movie (which was later remade as big broadway musical), it is the story of a faded star of the silent screen era, living in the past in her decaying mansion on the fabled Los Angeles street, "Sunset Boulevard". Gloria Swanson was herself a star of silent films, and her later role in Sunset Boulevard pretty much defined her career for posterity. Her portrayal has become the archetype for the "elder diva actress" or "dramatic grande dame" who uses bravado to mask deep sadness and regret. So this design pulls from that whole genre and archetype.

Here's a reference pic of Gloria Swanson I used that gave me the idea of the big beehive head wrap:

<-- Click this for the full picture

For the coat/cape, I knew I wanted it to be big and billowy, to allow me to interpret the top part as long drooping willow leaves. In this case, I was actually thinking of the garments worn by one of the most famous wicked cartoon grande dames of all -- Cruella Deville:

<-- Click this for the full picture

Yeah, she wears a fur coat and not a cape, but that was the big, oversized feel I had in mind.

Weeping Willow's body is supposed to evoke the image of a long, tight evening gown. Weeping Willow doesn't have feet, she has prehensile "roots" (Ingrain should be in her level-up moveset, imho), that are supposed to look like the bottom of a dress spreading out on the floor, perhaps hinting at the tattered look you see in some witches dresses.

Weeping Willow's arms are colored to give the impression of arm-length gloves that complete the look of a high-society lady.

I originally had Weeping Willow posed standing pretty much straight up. But while searching for references, I came across this picture of a figurine titled "Grande Dame":

<-- Click this for the full picture

I loved the way the figurine's hips are shifted to the side, so I incorporated that into Weeping Willow's stance.

Eye References
Ah, the eyes. In my opinion, Weeping Willow's eyes are really the centerpiece of the design. I know some people don't like the eyes, but I personally love them. I worked very, very hard to get them just right and I am pleased with how they turned out. When designing the eyes, I knew I wanted them to be "wide open". There's something very creepy about a wide-eyed stare. Here's a pic of Gloria Swanson doing the look in Sunset Boulevard:

<-- Click this for the full picture

I also mentioned in my first post that I was thinking of the creepy open-eyed look that some people get when they have had too many facelifts, and their skin has been pulled so tight that their eyes look like they are perpetually open.

Here is an early development sketch of the eyes, when I was considering having her face wrapped in post-surgery bandages, with big wide-open eyes:

<-- Click this for the full picture

I decided to ditch the whole plastic surgery angle, because it didn't look that great, we've already done the bandages look in the biggest way possible with CAP in Revenankh, and plastic surgery isn't exactly the sort of thing you play up in a kid's videogame. But the sketch got me thinking of a scene from A Clockwork Orange, where Alex's eyes are propped open with little hooks, forcing him to watch some disturbing films:

<-- Click this for the full picture

That scene is what led me to extend Weeping Willow's "eyelashes" all the way up to her "headband". I planned on having big eyelashes anyway, just to emphasize the feminine look. But by extending them all the way up like that was due to Kubrick's film. I realize it is an incredibly obscure reference, but if there are any Clockwork Orange fans out there, you might appreciate my nod to one of the creepiest scenes of all time.

The black drooping ellipses under her eyes are supposed to convey sadness, like a woman who wears lots of mascara, and it runs down her face when she cries.

Here's an early inking of the eyes, when I was trying to make all the eye elements fit together.

<-- Click this for the full picture

I hated that version, for obvious reasons. But I knew the elements had potential. In the final version, you can see how I pulled it all together.

For the record, in Pokemon terms, I don't think of Weeping Willow as having "eyelashes" or "mascara" or anything like that. She has organic face markings around her eyes. All this stuff I am mentioning here, is just visual inspiration for how I came up with the look.

ive gone through this thread a lot and the answer unquestionably to me is dougs...just the amount of work put into the design, the pokemon feel, and everything else about it makes sense and feels right...id also like to think that this would be an ingame 1 time encounter in front of a giant tree but could breed heh....

i think everyone has done a really fantastic job but dougs has blown me away so ill be pulling for you!

Really hoping to see everyone's final submissions making it through, especially Mayatrease's and Sentret's...

Wyverii: If only it was possible to make your second picture your main design because I think that pose potrays your sketchmon's personality so much better than the first picture; it looks really cool and dynamic.

tea_and_blues: Your new supporting material is absolutely phenomenal. Looks like Sacred Fire will be one of the moves of choice for this CAP to sketch.

DougJustDoug: I can really feel the emotion coming from her backstory. You've put plenty of work into it and it really shows...!

noobiess: Looks like a superhero of some sort from the thumbnails, to be honest. I'm interested in seeing where you can bring this design, it looks cool :)

Normal, human shrine maidens are a vessel between the gods and the people; just priestesses. Flytrap Miko offers the same services to her fellow pokemon; channeling the spirits of the deceased to talk to them. She dosen't ask for anything in return... most of the time. The eyes on her skirt and little bush on her head allow her to communicate with the spirits.

In the case that Flytrap Miko does ask for something in return, it's usually a small offering, but smaller Pokemon, especially Bug-types, have to think twice about approaching her during this state. Flytrap Miko are solitary and desire nothing but a single, good friend; she might end up a little too attached to her clients and/or spirits when she helps them.

Unfortunately for them and her, she gets a little crazy when she starts getting attached.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v407/Yilx/nanacreep.jpg

Flytrap Miko might get a little too posessive at times and her six eyes might creep the more faint-hearted out, but all in all Flytrap Miko means well and just wishes to serve as a means of communication between the deceased and the living.

Like a boss, bearmon enters. Ghost and Grass at their best. For all of you who are already asking, no I don't know how he uses sketch (with honey or something, bears are good painter). He's cool, bulky and he's a bear, what could go wrong?

In native North American culture bears are very spiritual and appear in many stories. There also seems to be no good bear Pokemon yet, so I decided this would be it. Grizzlies are much bulkier than Black bears so I used them for inspiration, however I came down to a coloring problem at the end. I really like Spirit bear, a type of Black bear that lives only on Vancouver Island. They are white but not albino, I was considering making the bear white but in the end it didn't look ghostly enough. Anyways that's all you need to know about this.

I honestly will be supporting Ylix's design, cause I just love the flytrap miko, and it was one that i liked from the begining. plus Ylix is just so good at art and things ;3;

Deep within the forests of old, where the trees grow tall and their roots dig deep, spirits of the forest bask in the shade of the leaves. These spirits fill the very fabric of the forest with all sorts of emotions. Fear, pain, malice, sadness...

Hope.

"A child is lost the woods", the spirits cry, hungry to corrupt the living but they shall not dare to go near him. The boy is being lead through the forest by the spirit of creativity, of hope and dreams, of wonderment and inspiration. Not all emotions birth misery and evil.

The child is lucky, a fatal mistake turned second chance without even knowing it. The amusing ghosts and ghouls pulling faces and hissing in the distance would take him if they could. Perhaps in time the boy will grow and remember this event and the creature that helped him. The littlest forest guardian, protector of innocence.

I like those gender differences noobiess! yours has a simplistic happiness that we don't get enough of around here :)

Also Steampowered that looks much better! I do think though, that the claws on the arms could stand to be a lighter colour.

Everything Else

When looking for an ideal model for a Grass/Ghost type, I immediately thought of the Stinking Corpse Lily, Rafflesia arnoldii. Unfortunately, this was already a Pokemon by name of Vileplume; however, I had another in mind. Amorphophallus titanum, the titan arum, corpse flower, or "huge misshapen penis flower". It is the largest flower in the world, and possibly my favourite plant of all time. With the base intact, I decided to make it more than a simple eerie-looking plant thing (otherwise it would arguably have been inclined more as a Poison-type). I initially had the idea of a Ghost trapped inside the plant, as my earlier concepts suggested, but then I integrated the two parts further to form a finished product. The ectoplasm and the vines still combine as I enjoy their effect.
The ectoplasm that controls [CAP2]'s body and vines can assume different shapes depending on what [CAP2] is thinking. Hence it can broadly "Sketch" in its mind a move that it has seen in the past. As the art would suggest, this can take the form of anything it has seen once - For example, it seems to take the form of Ho-oh for Sacred Fire, or Scyther's blade for Cut, with the ectoplasm also converting to the element it is copying. However, because it's a bit thick, it can only ever remember one move in its life. This trait is not natural to [CAP2] and is only triggered when interbred with Smeargle.
It's a smelly plant possessed by a Ghost that looks like a willy.

It was never an interpretive dance instructor in a previous life, it is not out for revenge against all the evil in the world, it is not worshipped as a deity by unspecified ethnic backgrounds, it does not reference anything that may or may not have happened in the past, it does not happen to have some sort of unbelievable power that is inconsistent with its in-game performance, it does not do anything peculiar with eels' eyeballs, and it does not have an irrational hatred towards Delibird.

Yilx: I love the stupefied expression on that Dragonite's face.

Steampowered: I feel as though your bear's right shoulder is a bit low, but that might just be nitpicking.

Okay, I was on, but totally forgot to post. This is a 21 hour warning. Yeah, such an impractical number, but hopefully this jogs the memory of anyone who has been holding out. It's coming down to the wire and you really need to get your submissions finalized! Make sure you follow the rules in the OP and read Doug's post here. Good luck!

it gets its massive attack from the power of ginseng.

explanation:

GRASS: well, this is kind of obvious.. ginseng is a plant known for its medical properties in East Asia. It has a root and a plant structure.

GHOST: ginseng plants are known for having roots that look disturbingly like humans. See: http://dmt-sbi3u.wikispaces.com/file/view/first_ginseng_pic.jpg/188259463/first_ginseng_pic.jpg This ginseng is a ghost+zombie and has red eyes matching its berry :D

Overall, it looks bulky, looks kind of strong with its visible muscles, and looks more physical oriented than special. It uses sketch using its leaves.

A spell to bring the dead back to life went horribly wrong when sheets of paper became one and brought back an ancient elder tree from a forbidden forest. The berries it once had when it was alive have become fruits of ink.
The original spell mark remains. It has a hollow inside.

This Pokemon can not learn sketch unless it breeds with Smeargle. Yes, the Pokemon naturally has ink but it does not have the skill to sketch with it unless it breeds of course. The ink berries are pretty much used to poison people and Pokemon and take their souls once they die from ink poisoning.

"This Pokemon came back from the dead with a spell, it generously gives people and Pokemon one of its berries to eat which are apparently sweet but fatal. It provides them with shade and comfort and when they pass away it snatches their soul."

Sprites have never been considered as particularly large or imposing figures, and this is no exception. A deep umber color, the sprite picks its way through the forest, almost completely unnoticeable in its surroundings were it not for its lurid green eye, glowing in the dark like a lantern. Twiglike limbs make it seem weak, frail, as if it would splinter at the slightest touch.

If only it would.

What this creature lacks in sheer strength it makes up for by its uncanny ability to absorb the living essence of vegetation around it. Ectoplasm swirls around its wrists and hands, imbued with the life energy of nearby plants. From it, the sprite can summon massive vines, treelike in their constitution and power, rugged, creaking pillars of pure fiber and sclerenchyma. Easily capable to deflect most attacks, they whip around with unnatural speed, pulverizing anything that stands in their path.

The sprite itself may be feeble, but the same cannot be said for its vines.

ps: doug i hope i did it right this time

birkal i love yours and prefer the bottom right scheme with the darker purple

side note, any art from Cartoons! yet??? ill be sad without a submission from him

Sheesh, so many epic last-minute entries! If Mos' wasn't so godly I would have a very tough time voting. Mine is the only cooking-related one, so I think I have a slim chance of winning in that regard (originality).

So far I'd say this is probably the best CAP yet and not just because this is my first CAP not lurking... Such a variety with almost no submission resembling another, as if, in a synopsis, the CAPmon's true identity itself is as varied as Sketch. Anyway, throwing in my 2 cents...

Personal Top 5 favorite submissions of the entire thread in no particular order:

Honorable mention to a certain painting ghost for just being so bizarrely awesome. Hard to see as a true canidate, but I can't get over how much I love that tree branch cleft.

Unfortunately, I think Yilx's Mawile-Lilligant Maiden will topple pretty much everything else in the votes. Don't get me wrong, it's a great design, but it just doesn't ooze the charm or originality that the others give me.

Also, if I may ask it here, how will the first poll work? Given the large amount of submissions this time, do all the submissions get in the poll, or just those that have received a lot of attention within the thread?

I haven't updated in a while, but I'll try to submit something tomorrow morning. In the meantime, here's some supporting material I worked on.

Since CAP2 can only acquire Sketch once, whatever move it gets is whatever it is stuck with. To reflect this, I decided what if it's design was slightly different depending on what special move it has learned. Since my entry deals with Tiki statues, which often have elaborate patterns, I came up with a variety of different patterns that can be painted onto this Pokemon's mask which would affect what move it knew.

It's only a small selection, since there are as many different patterns as there are Pokemon moves. My Final Submission will just have the Unpainted version shown.

Of course, competitively, it isn't very wise to show what move you have. But for flavor alone, it makes this Pokemon more interesting and incorporates the main reason why we created this thing in the first place.

All submissions that follow the rules get included and we vote for our top favorites in the thread, from my experience.

I believe the voting would work where we vote for the ones we like in a listed order, much like how the previous CAP votes have gone and how the abilities Poll 1 just went. We vote for a number of things we like best, then the number whittles down to only one vote for the final poll. I still don't understand how the scoring of that works, though.

I think one for each move will over complicate things

Otherwise, we missed your art! make sure to make the tiki golem BUFF :D

I was hoping to have more time to do this. Hopefully I will be able to complete it on time. The head is nearly complete and I have a basic concept for the shiny color scheme. Here are both updates.

Edit: Very quick sketch of the body to try to display its size. The tree branch is NOT a prop. It is part of the design, the same way Conkeldurr has pillars and Hippowdon has sand beneath itself. I'll pick up in the morning to polish it off.

Description
This pokemon is based on Crop Circles - it is nocturnal, quiet, mysterious.. it comes out only at night and methodically flattens tall stalks of grains and grasses into patterns. It has a blank expression and does not usually interact with other pokemon or people. Its consciousness seems to be elsewhere..

Its preferred habitat is in large fields of tall grassy vegetation. It's fur is coarse and dry, like prairie grass or stalks of wheat, and has the color to match.

Description
Based off of the Imps from Okami. It it made up of branches and logs that are held together by a mischevious spirit. The mask is normally blank to all who are born without the move Sketch. If one is born with Sketch, a Kanji will be on the mask instead. When a new move is sketched, the kanji will change to fit the new move. Obviously this feature is purely flavor as I don't believe we would be able to encorporate in the sprites very effectively.

Examples of Mask Kanji

Sketch (sketch)-------Spore (mushroom)-----Earthquake (earthquake)

Sacred Fire (sacred)---Shell Break (Shatter)---Leaf Storm (Leaf)
