Your Top 10 Favourite Songs of All Time

Massive Kudos to X5Dragon (Smogon Best Taste of 2012)

This isn't as much a list of my favourite tracks of all time as it is songs I'm really digging atm. Also, I've limited the list to one track per artist otherwise it'd be flooded with TOKiMONSTA tracks.

10. David Sylvian & Ryuichi Sakamoto - Bamboo Music
The exotic synth prowess of Ryuichi Sakamoto with the extravagant voice of David Sylvian..this is, like, the ultimate duo.

9. AM & Shawn Lee - Somebody Like You
Geniunely surprised this isn't a funk classic.

8. Pizzicato Five - Boy Meets Girl
Early shibuya-kei goodness. Mamiko Sasaki will always be my favourite P5 vocalist. I love you forever Mamiko

7. Jet Age of Tomorrow - Betty's Room (prod. Tyler the Creator)
Incredible production, weird-ass lyrics. But it's mostly about the production.

6. Yoshinori Sunahara - Life & Space
It's all spacey and shit.

5.Casiopea - Frou Frou
Good ol' Japanese jazz fusion. The amount of people who stumble onto this track expecting a Frou Frou track on YT is hilarious.

4. TOKiMONSTA - Bright Shadows
God I love TOKiMONSTA so freaking much <3

3. Flying Lotus - Golden Diva
Electronic masterpiece. If you're going to listen to any track on this list, make it this one.

2. Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Reminiscences
Ironic chillout whoop

1. Toro Y Moi - New Beat
I'm not sure why I like this song so much. Chaz's singing is dull and the synths are cheesy as all hell. It just works, though. So. Damn. Very. Well. Plus my favourite music video ever despite it being produced by ~Urban Outfitters~

My "Honorable Mentions" List:

Explosions in the Sky - Your Hand In Mine
Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks
Animal Collective - My Girls
The Antlers - Wake
Cold War Kids - Hospital Beds
Death Cab for Cutie - Marching Bands of Manhattan
Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal
The Lumineers - Ho Hey
Modest Mouse - The Stars are Projectors
Phoenix - 1901

Alice

The worst taste in music
My list consists mainly of dubstep, so I doubt anyone would be interested...

They already made a katy perry list, a j-music list, and some metal lists as well, so I don't think that's a problem at all :P

Who cares if it's dubstep? Remember, everyone has their own tastes and shouldn't be afraid to post their interests.

Dubstep is fucking awesome. In fact, I would love you to post your list because I've been meaning to find more dubstep...all I have is Skrillex, Burial, and Nero.

In no order...

The Shins - Caring is Creepy
Mercer is a lyrical genius. And that bassline is gorgeous.

Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe
It's Jimi fucking Hendrix.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Moya
The greatest post-rock song ever, in my opinion.

Blur - Coffee + TV
Albarn and Coxon are one hell of a duo. This is proof that Albarn is a genius songwriter and can pen an amazing melody, while Coxon's guitar work here is just legendary.

The Go! Team - Huddle Formation
STANDING ON THE BOARD
BOARD IS ON THE WHEELS
WHEELS ARE ON THE GROUND
SPINNING ROUND AND ROUND

Play this song and all your problems will go away.

The National - Fake Empire
Man tears.

Mogwai - New Paths To Helicon Pt. 1
More man tears. My second favorite post-rock song.

Johnny Cash - Hurt
A shit ton of man tears.

Arcade Fire - Tunnels
Not quite as many man tears but still a lot of man tears.

My Bloody Valentine - When You Sleep
Yes, this is the best song ever.

The Weeknd- Thursday
The Weeknd- Life Of the Party
Maroon 5- Misery
Skrillex- Bangarang
Coyote Kisses - Acid Wolfpack
Daft Punk - Something About Us
Pokemon- All We Wanna do
Ill do the rest later :P

Jesus christ. Get out of my iTunes, seriously.

10. Dream Theater - Learning to Live
Prog metal at it's finest, an 11-minute journey of beautiful and engaging music, without ever becoming self-indulgent as many other DT songs do.

9. Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
Cliche, but goddamn it's such a good song. Plant's vocals in that final verse, chills every time man.

8. Rush - La Villa Strangiato
There's honestly so much going on in this song that I haven't even a clue how to describe it but it never feels rushed (heh) or cluttered, every section is given its own space to breathe and allowed to develop to a natural finishing point before seamlessly transitioning into the next section. And Lifeson's solo is one of the greatest of all time, hands down.

7. Iron Maiden - The Nomad
All around great song with some tasty riffs, but it's at 4:30 where it cements its place as one of the greats. One of the most slowly building and fantastically developed guitar solos of all time, conjures beautiful imagery of vast emptiness and exploration without a single word needing to be spoken.

6. Iron Maiden - Phantom of the Opera (live preferrably)
Now THIS is a riff fest. 7 minutes of nothing but the best riffs, and that triplet harmony at around 3 minutes is just too awesome.

5. Metallica - Fade to Black
More guitar solo songs! Probably too high on the list but it has personal value because the solo in this song inspired me to start playing lead guitar. And say what you will about Hammett nowadays, this is a fantastic solo.

4. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Deeply layered, incredibly moving, and with a 2 minute solo with an almost animalistic intensity and emotion, any fan of guitar playing in general owes it to themselves to check this song out.

3. Iron Maiden - The Thin Line Between Love and Hate
MORE Maiden! This is a remarkable song. At 8 minutes long, not a single section feels in any way weak. The vocals are phenomenal throughout, but it's the second chorus where Bruce really lets rip, dropping the harmonies to scream out one of the most powerful deliveries ever. So many good riffs in this song, with an excellent interplay between melody, heaviness and just fuck this is such a well crafted song.

2. Metallica - Orion
If you've heard this song, specifically the mid section, no more words need to be spoken. Burton's bass riff in the centrepiece of this song is one of the greatest of all time, and the spectacular development of the whole section is something that leaves me absolutely speechless every time.

1. Death - Voice of the Soul
From the paramount band of death metal comes... A 3 minute instrumental ballad? Featuring nothing but an acoustic guitar to back up and two harmonised electrics for lead, this song represents the most achingly beautiful piece of music ever placed unto the world by mankind. Unlike previous songs on the list, each section feels self-contained, yet still retaining that soul-crushing emotion, and all inexorably moving towards the most powerful grand finale in all of music. You know what, stop reading. Just go listen to it. Now.

I lost my interest in metal a couple years ago but this song is just fucking timeless and one of the greatest instrumentals of all time.

10. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Acoustic) - David Gilmour
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPL3O7NmgpI

It's bluesy and jazz-y and powerful. The playing is decent and the effects are neat. Gilmour's voice is grainy and epic. Great song, great performance.

9. Shadows - The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnrH-7URvpc

It's got a nice techno-y thing going on and the subtle sax playing in certain parts of the song are amazing.

8. A Minor Swing - Django Reinhardt
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpmOTGungnA

The iconic gypsy jazz song. Django only had two functional fingers on his playing hand, and he did ridiculous things with them.

7. That's Life - Frank Sinatra
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIiUqfxFttM

It's Sinatra's voice with a heavy bluesy influence. Bam.

6. Build Me Up Buttercup - The Foundations
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iol0B-clFFM

It's happy and powerful and the horns are nice and the vocals are good. I like it.

5. Parasite - Nick Drake
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABAi5jWvxbU

Nick Drake has the ability to take very little and make it sound like a lot. This is, in my opinion, his best song.

4. Desolation Row - Bob Dylan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YA9ZR8ykRow

Lyrically, this is probably the best song of all time. It's poetry.

3. Little Boxes - Pete Seeger
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=La21jYGIQ8k

Little Boxes is a great song. Really American. Pete Seeger's version is the best. That banjo is great.

2. Home Sweet Home - Motley Crue
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DasvuHUgUHg

The essential power ballad.

1. While My Guitar Gently Weeps - Sungha Jung
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsmtekPP4wM

Fingerstyle guitar is the most challenging and impressive guitar style out there. No matter how fast or hard you can play, fingerstyle is always more impressive. Sungha Jung is a master of fingerstyle, and still at a very young age. Seeing him blows my mind.

0. Eleanor Rigby - Stanley Jordan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QaWUjJkBZA

With the exception of Stanley Jordan. When I say "Hey, wanna see something cool?" chances are I'm going to show someone this video of Stanley Jordan. He plays an entirely tapping style of guitar, letting him play in multiple octaves at once. At one minute in, you can hear the absolute genius of this guitar style at its most realized state.
