New Year's Resolutions

Hey, since most of us are in 2017 I decided a New Year's Resolutions thread should be made. One already might have been made but I thought, new year, new thread.

Personally, my real life resolutions, beside doing well in school, is to overall be a better person. Multiple times through 2016 friends have left me / stopped talking to me, mostly because I had done something wrong. I want to stop this since it is honestly one of the worst feelings in the world. I want to be kinder and more considerate of others to stop this from happening.

For the internet, I really want to do better in tournaments. Mostly Doubles OU, but also any fun tournaments I enter like other tier's seasonals. I also want to meet and make a lot of new friends, just like I did in 2016 :)

Feel free to leave your Resolutions down below :)

Please keep at it. Things like that make me smile, I wish you luck

I don't necessarily want to shit all over New Year's Resolutions, but why do people decide that the start of a new year is the time to tell themselves to do all the stuff they've been meaning to do anyway? I haven't had a resolution in ages because I try to tackle the stuff I think is worth doing as soon as it becomes relevant, and I don't see a reason to change that for this year.

There's honestly nothing PHYSICALLY special about the day. The Earth rotated again, so what? I mean yeah that's kinda cool, but the real VALUE in the idea of a "New Year" is the idea that you get to start fresh again. Remember entering High School from Middle, or College from High School (if you did either of these things)? You had a chance to reinvent yourself, and that's part of what makes these experiences so cool.

Well the New Year functions the same way on a slightly different scale. It's a chance to do something you wouldn't normally do. Lifestyle change, attitude change, work ethic change, you name it. Every year we get a chance to tackle a new year from a neutral standing point. So no, January 1st doesn't mean anything; not physically at least. But it IS a chance to change who you are, even if just by a little bit. Maybe you stop drinking soda, maybe you start going to the gym, maybe you continue doing you. Either way, you get an active chance to metaphorically start anew, so take it!

New Year's Resolutions are stupid for reasons GotR touched on. Half the time it's just posturing anyway. But who cares, if people wanna do it go for it, only good can come from setting new goals. Unless those goals are bad, like you want to kill drug addicts or something in which case you probably ought to step down as president of the Phillipines.

Anyway, here are a bunch of goals I already had prior to the start of this year:
  • Make it through uni (I have no clue how this will go)
  • Expand investments (already making substantial progress here, with more to come over the next month)
  • Complete my website (Progress is stalled atm, and there's a long road ahead because atm everything's front-end but I'm not sure that's viable)
  • Ask out this girl at work (I never see her except at work tho =/ )
  • Keep growing pokemon perfect (It's an awesome community with great potential imo)
  • Keep playing different games (I'm studying to be a game dev, but I devote very little time to games except for pokemon which isn't good)
Things that would be nice to accomplish but I'm not placing much importance on:
  • Be less depressed (I've had it for years and there's no reason to believe it will improve this year)
  • Shoot 80% from the line and/or 33% from 3 (when the hell am I going to find time to practice this? Also the ironic thing is that it's not even remotely realistic me shooting 3s in a game because I'm a big, but if I can improve from 3 I'll improve from mid range, which is more important)
  • Start reviewing games (the specific medium is an issue, but I'm thinking a simple blog might be best, I find videos annoying anyway, now it's just an issue of finding time)
  • Make it through my backlog of books (I'll make significant progress here, but some of them are just too complex for me to realistically engage with thanks to depression. I'm looking at you, Malazan Book of the Fallen. Also for others I've forgotten a lot of stuff, so I'll re-read all the previous books in the series as well)
  • Learn some music (hahaha who am I kidding, that's not gonna happen)

It's just a traditional thing to I guess. To be fair New Year's Resos are often known for their fragility. Gym memberships surge January, then fall in February. People post Facebook statuses talking of all the glamorous things they will do, but then months later, nothing has happened. And so on. I like your attitude better.

Personally I've just resolved to exercise more/start streaming, with something resembling a schedule. Keeping it small so I don't get discouraged, as discouragement leads to doing nothing again.

If I had a problem in February of 2016 I'm not going to wait until January of 2017 to fix it, thats illogical. However, New Years is undefinably a fresh start. I'm sure everyone, like myself, has experienced moments where they just want to start over, for example after getting a poor grade on an important assignment. You shouldn't wait until Mew Years to change, you should adapt when problems arise. However, New Years is an extremely powerful motivation tool as it gives you the mental chance to start over like I stated previously. Furthermore, not all New Year's Resolutions fail, that is a common misconception. For instance, at the start of 2016 some of my internet goals were to Top 10 the Smogon Doubles OverUsed ladder which I did numerous times. I also wanted to get authority somewhere on PS! and I got voiced in the CAP Project Room. So no, not all resolutions are doomed to fail, some will of course, but it is indisputable that some New Year's Resolutions can lead to great things.

Lol, just once I wish we had one of these threads where people didn't argue about whether or not New Years Resolutions are pointless. Maybe next year finally. I see New Years Resolutions as a very good thing and it always bums me out to see the pointless negativity surrounding them.

It's simple really. The end of a year and beginning of another is very symbolic culturally as it represents change and growth. So at the end of the year, people tend to be very introspective about what they've accomplished that year and what they feel they failed at, etc. So with that in mind, the beginning of the year, while these thoughts are still in your mind, is a good time to decide what you are going to do about it.

Yeah, the New Year is really just an arbitrary time and there is no "real" reason to start then than any other time. But if it is a good source of motivation for someone, then that's not a bad thing. Besides, realistically achieving goals always involves a level of planning and visualization anyway, so setting a specific date to begin (and hopefully a schedule that continues from that starting date) is nothing but helpful. Also keep in mind that not every goal starts right on New Years, a lot of goals are "I started X last November and I want to continue with it this year" or so.

Some people might use it as an excuse to put off self-improvement and goals for a while, but that's just plain procrastination and laziness and those people know it. So like with all things, it just depends on if a person is genuine or not, if they are being honest with themselves and what they want. It really doesn't have to be that complicated.

I was planning to make a similar thread but I wasn't really active so yeah. But what I am more interested in is if people have managed to make good on their resolutions from previous years. Some of them took me more than just one year, but I think I'm doing pretty well.

In 2014 I wanted to get more into music (after kind of falling out with it after high school) and start a band. I have done that, I got good at saxophone again, and learned piano in college in 2015. The band is currently at like 2-3 members and I hope to be recording an album sometime this year. We're playing mostly music from video games, anime, and stuff in that particular cultural sphere. In 2014 one of my New Years Resolutions was to learn Harmonica and I did eventually do that in 2015. Last month I also got a ukulele and a trumpet so that is gonna be cool too!

Another resolution I had for 2015, after coming off a pretty big argument with my dad in November 2014, was to just be more in control of myself and not get angry and get into fights with people again. It really helped, as far as I remember, I haven't really gotten into a heated argument with someone since then. Feels really nice to have self-control.

This year I only have one resolution in particular, which is a continuation of my 2014 one, is to continue improving my Vietnamese. It's something I have been doing since I declared it in 2014, albeit very slowly. But I have a feeling this year it's going to kick up a bit!

Aside from that, most of them are just general things, like wanting to be more relaxed about life and being able to accept things. Just general self-improvement in all the general ways. I don't think just "general improvement of character" is a bad goal to have either, as long as you are mindful and consciously aware of all the different things you want to improve.

Anyway, I wish everyone a very happy new year and hope that everything goes well for you!

Career
  • Move to London for work,
  • Or get into a good grad school,
  • Or get a job in research

Ok so outside of what I said at 3 am on new years under the potential influence, I've come up with some cool resolutions
  • Go outside for at least 30 mins to an hour once a day, this doesnt always have to be for physical activity, especially on gym recovery days. Needsa vitamin D and athletics yall
  • Attempt to do at least one social activity every week, this ones gonna be hard since my sister just got an xbox and I got a new desktop but IM GONNA TRY, defintely could get social and I like being with people, I just dont find myself doing it often
  • Become confident enough / gain enough confidence from my parents to drive 2 hrs to bakersfield, need to see my homegirl :(
  • Drink 3 glasses of water a day
  • Win a damn premier challenge I always get top 4 and its annoying as hell, especially since I always go 4-0 in swiss, throw round 5 because I dont care about it and just want a revitalizing break, win a tough matchup in top 8, and suddenly my mental games off and i play like a retard in top 4.
  • Get good at cs go
  • Attend classes at the college my high school is super shitty and small so if I cant transfer I'm gonna have to dual enroll. Fuck im only there because it was convinent freshman year
I'm sure I'll think of more but for right now thats about it

Oh and also get a job

Half the time it's just posturing anyway.
Thats another thing, I wanna improve my posture. I've deffo got better posture than i did even a year ago, but I always slide down in my chair and start to look autistic

Thats another thing, not using autistic as an insult. Instead, I'll call people "Ortheore"

This year I'm more determined to hold on my resolutions, compared to those of the past years, even if they have nothing extraordinary.

First, I must attend my classes at college because this is becoming more and more difficult and if I don't go to class nor study at home I just won't pass.
I'd also like to begin doing sports, not that I dislike my physical condition but it could be better ^__^
And maybe, becoming a better Pokémon player if I have enough time to improve. I've been playing those games since 15 years I think that this is time for me to get better. I don't know how I could do this, but I assume that playing more often and being more concentrated will sure help me !

  1. Get a full-time job (I work part-time atm)
  2. Get a gym membership post job attainment and work out regularly mostly for health reasons not for vanity (I can't afford one right now because the rent in Seattle is too damn high)
  3. Look into possible graduate programs for the next year
  4. Start volunteering again
  5. Eat healthier (relying on my good metabolism right now, probably not the best idea)
  6. Stop being such a potato on my days off, i.e. go outside or something
  7. Get back into Smogon for Sun/Moon! :D
Cheers all! and good luck with all your resolutions :)

  • Work on reducing my procrasination and getting more structured with schoolwork
  • Get better at basketball and be able to dunk
  • Socialise with people outside of school and training
  • Eat more healthy stuff
  • Ask this girl out (only see her at basketballtraining though)
  • Start learning programming
  • Work on my posture cause good god it's awful atm
  • This kinda ties in with the procrasination, but stop wasting so much time. I find myself sometimes sitting for like an hour on my computer just browsing through stupid stuff in my FB feed and watching bad YT videos I've watched 5 times already when I actually have stuff to do
  • Just in general get my life strucured. While 2016 was a pretty nice year for me in a lot of ways, I got pretty good grades and stuff, I can't keep on living like I've done for the past year if I want to be healthy.

friendly reminder because this the most common new years resolution: diet culture is harmful to your mental health, pocketbook, & society at large. you can love your body regardless of its size. weight is but one arbitrary measure of 'health', the most ridiculous social construction, and you can set more effective goals to improve yourself than losing weight (which in itself is playing into a fatphobic dominant ideology)

best wishes achieving your resolutions, beloveds

I lost 25 lbs one year by changing my diet. I've been able to maintain my diet and weight 4 years later. Since getting to a healthy weight I preform much better in athletics, I generally feel better and look better.
Losing weight is definitely a good goal for some people. Only a doctor can really give you proper advice since all our bodies are different. For me I just completely stopped drinking soda and cut way back on fast food and pizza.

losing weight isn't a good goal. not now, not ever. it is ableist, performative, & dangerous to approach health as aesthetic. you can't say that you love your body yet want to change it in the same sentence. my comment was bashing diet culture b.c. we need to reexamine our biases and learned standards of beauty & aesthetic and not attempt to conform to them in dangerous ways. you can find ways to move your body and be enthralled with how it changes without the end goal of aesthetic in mind. you can be healthy without being entrapped by beauty norms which push ppl to make, many times unhealthy, decisions to lose weight.

being healthy and losing weight are linked; however, one focuses on the person while the other focuses on a dangerous ideology. we should promote the former and not allow the latter to maintain its gravity.

Literally anything that incorporates an aesthetic paradigm is "ableist and performative." This includes the use of niche terminology in lieu of more common vernacular. It's classist to not accommodate to every level of reading. And hey, why not make the argument that New Year's is a luxury holiday for those whose problems are so superficial they can wait for a specific time of the year to deal with them?

That said, one of my ongoing resolutions is to lose weight because my family has a history of high cholesterol, and if I let my weight gain—which it currently is due to a medical condition—I am at higher risk of contracting a coronary heart disease. Losing weight is conducive to combatting high levels of cholesterol, a fact verified by institutions such as the John Hopkins Medical School. Perhaps, though, I should consider reframing my goal as "trying to decrease my chances of dying early" lest I risk being pegged as a fitness aesthete.

Uhm not much to say;
I'd like to go out with friends more, although i will be a pretty busy with studying, which i really need to do more, with some work i need to do like twice a week and sport that i really like and im not gonna drop it. Surely i will be online less time!
Also i gotta get a new gf.
What about you guys?

i take problems with people conflating weight loss & health. my comment wrt diet culture was meant to emphasise the dangerous aspects of it: the dual standard of thin-bodies:fat-bodies, the focus on starvation for aesthetic, the lack of holistic regard for health, and the coded language used to describe "health". the fact is, in cases such as yours, studies condense holistic health to losing weight when that isn't the case.

we live in a society which is fatphobic and i do not think anyone should subscribe to fatphobic diet culture. the diet culture thru media manufactures discontent and offers products & plans to overcome this dreaded obesity 'epidemic'. it undermines ppls self concept and self love.

& that's fucked up. and no one should feel that they need to change their body for aesthetic purposes. if you want to engage in activities & move your body in ways that you feel will better yourself, that's wonderful! but if you want to 'lose weight', i think you should re-examine what exactly is the impetus of your actions.
