CAP27 So Far

With the confirmation that we will have one (1) pre-evolution... it's time to get CAP27 a name! I mean, I for one would like to stop having to refer to it as "CAP27", personally...

-----

--Introduction--

If you are inspired by the winning art design and have come up with a good and unique name you'd like the CAP to be known by, please submit your idea here and we will put it up for a vote against all other users' ideas. Final submissions must conform to the submission rules, so please read them carefully. Breaking the posting rules can also result in disqualification.

RULES:

Legal name submissions must meet the following standards
  • Names must start with a capital letter.
  • Names cannot be longer than 12 letters.
  • Names can only contain the following characters:
    • Letters A-Z
    • Numbers 1-9
    • Dash (-)
    • Apostrophe (')
    • Period (.)
    • Colon (:)
    • Space
  • No more than two capital letters can be included in the name, and capital letters cannot be consecutive.
  • A maximum of two non-letters can be included in the name, and a maximum of one non-letter of each type can be included (ie. You can't have two numbers, or two apostrophes, but you could have one number and one apostrophe)

Names will not be slated if they are:
  • completely unrelated to the design
  • the name of an existing Pokemon
  • silly (puns are fine)
  • based primarily on memes
  • meant to inflame, intimidate, or cause controversy

WIPs
Work In Progress (WIP) Names can be posted at any time for comments from the community.

No more than three WIP Names can be posted by any individual person through the entire course of the submission thread. This limit applies to ALL posts made by a single person, even if previous posts are edited or deleted. This limit is intended to curb the tendency for some submitters to spam the thread repeatedly with lists of Names. This detracts from other submissions and makes it difficult for commenters to survey the submission thread.

Do not bump your WIP names by posting them repeatedly, or making minor spelling changes of a letter or two. Bumping will result in the disqualification of all names by the offender. Editing or deleting bump posts will not prevent disqualification.

Final Submissions
Only ONE Final Submission can be made per person. Any Final Submission that does not follow the proper format will be disqualified.

Name Final Submissions can only be posted after a CAP Moderator posts in the thread announcing that final submissions are open. Any Final Submission posted prior to the Moderator announcement post will disqualify the submitter from the poll entirely. Even if the offending post is edited later or deleted, the submitter will still be disqualified for the remainder of the thread. This ensures that there is some time for discussion and that all submitters have equal opportunity to post Final Submissions without anyone unfairly "jumping the gun".

Please make a new post after the CAP moderator announcement for Final Submissions. Do not edit a previous post prior to the announcement to make it a Final Submission. All posts prior to the announcement post will be ignored for purposes of making the Name Poll.

Final submissions must provide one sentence (25 words maximum) explaining the etymology of the name.

Final submissions must provide a common English pronunciation. The common pronunciation can be made in whatever format you feel best conveys the pronunciation to most English speakers. (You may optionally also provide an IPA pronunciation. For information about IPA and processing words into IPA read this guide: IPA For English. There are also numerous phonetic translation tools online that can help.)

Format
Name Final Submissions must be posted exactly in the following format and in the following exact order:
  • The first line of the post must have the words "Final Submission" in bold on its own line. No other text may be included before the bold heading.
  • A blank line
  • The Name submission in bold.
  • A blank line
  • A one line description of the etymology of the name or why it is appropriate for our Pokemon. (25 words maximum)
  • A blank line
  • "Pronounced: <common English pronunciation>"
  • "IPA: <IPA pronunciation>" (optional)
Below the Final Submission you can post other comments, explanations, etc.

Example final submission:
Final Submission

Syclant

A combination of "Icicle" + "Ant".

Pronounced: "SICKLE-ant"
IPA: sɪkəlænt

This name was originally submitted by Lawman on the very first CAP project. It is simple, elegant, and easy to pronounce (even if you are pronouncing it wrong), which is why it was chosen as the official name for CAP1!

CAP 27 Art Design:

WIP1

Tlexolotl

"Fiery monster" in Classical Nahuatl.

Pronounced: TLEH-ksuh-lo-tuhl
IPA: /ˈtlɛksəˌlɒtəl/

Basically substituted a(tl) "water" in axolotl with tle(tl) "fire".
Nahuatl pronunciation: [t͡ɬéˈʃoːloːt͡ɬ].

WIP2

Tlecoal

A portmanteau of Nahuatl tlecoatl "fiery snake" and coal.

Pronounced: TLEH-coal
IPA: /ˈtlɛkəʊl/

Reiga

WIP

Pyroette

A combination of "Pyrotechnics / Pyro" + "Pirouette / -ette".

Pronounced: "PYRO-ette"

Focus was on both what makes this a fire type (fireworks) and the design's magical girl grace (pirouette). The -ette wasn't intentional at first, but works well with the feminine design.

WIP

Sparxolotl

A combination of "sparks" + "axlotl" (the animal that inspired this design)

I like leaning into the fireworks aspect of the design that help connect it to its primary Fire typing. I also think "axolotl" is fun to say.

WIP

Datzalcoatl

A mix of "Dazzle" and Quetzalcoatl.
Pronounced DATZA-coatel

"Dazzle" was for its fire typing as well as the dazzling effect of fireworks, and "coatl" was for its lithe, serpentine body, similar to the Aztec serpent of lore.

WIP

Cindroteure

Portmanteau of "cinder", "dragon", and "saboteur"

References its obvious associated elements and the moves it uses to assist its allies and mess up whoever is unlucky enough to be on the other side of the field at the given time, or whoever is unlucky enough to not be on the other side of the field if it manages to get Spikes and/orSticky Web

Pronounced "SIN-droh-tyure"

edit: changed "cindrateure" to "cindroteure" to differentiate it from being an amateur

WIP

Salamoon

From "Salamander" and "Moon", also a play on the famous magical girl, Sailor Moon.

Pronounced: "Sa-la-MOON"
IPA: /'sæləˌmuːn/

The ‘salamander’ part references the amphibian nature of the design, while the moon is part of the night sky, which is the time you’d also want to light some fireworks.

WIP (2/3)

Frivolisk

From “Frivolous” and “Basilisk”

Pronounced: “FRI-vuh-lisk”
IPA: /‘frivəˌlisk/

Axoluna

From "Axolotl" because it's an axolotl and "Lunar" because it's like Sailor Moon.

Pronounced "ack-soh-LU-nuh"

WIP

Lacrosette

A combination of "Lacerta" (a constellation named after the Latin word for lizard) and "crosette" (a type of aerial firework effect).

Pronounced: LAH-kroh-zeht
IPA: /lɑːkroʊzɛt/

WIP

Fusillady

A combination of "Fusillade" + "Lady".

Pronounced: "FEW-si-LAY-dee"
IPA: /ˈfyo͞osəˌlādē/

I'm operating under the assumption that this is a 100% female pokemon. Given sword and shield's setting in a UK inspired setting, including the title of Lady seems appropriate.

WIP

Maholotl

"Mahou" (Japanese for Magic) + "Axolotl"

Pronounced: MAH-ho-laa-tul

What better name for a magical girl axolotl than one that's just "Magic Axolotl." It even has the same audible flow as Axolotl too. I was a bit unsure about using Japanese in the name at first, but looking at Pokemon like Gyarados, Kabuto, Kyurem, etc, I'm sure its fine. And it feels especially fitting too with this magical girl design.

WIP

Axolighten

Mix of "axolotl" and "lighten"

Luxolotl

Mix of "lux", unit of measurement of light, and "axolotl"

Will get pronunciations in ASAP.

WIP

Axolestial

A combination of "axolotl" and "celestial," tying in the fireworks and magical girl themes with the animal basis of CAP27.

Pronounced: "ax-uh-LES-ti-al" (?)
IPA: /ˈæksəˈlɛstiəl/

It seemed like space-related names were decently popular on the Discord, and this one was well enough received when I put it forward. Although it's only a simple combination of two words, I think it takes effective advantage of the overlap between "axolotl" and "celestial" and represents both words fully.
I'm not totally sure between "Axolestial" and "Axcelestial" (suggested by Birkal after I said Axolestial, intended to make "celestial" more obvious), but I currently think that the first spelling conveys both words more effectively (while the "axolotl" side might be lost in the second spelling) and the pronunciation alone should make "celestial" clear enough. I'm open to changing this - does anyone have any thoughts?

Whizzler

whiz + sizzler

Pronounced: wiz-lr

Whiz and sizzler are both thematically relevant for various reasons. Considering CAP 27’s art is primarily inspired by fireworks, it seemed like an ideal place to start. Whiz is to move quickly through the air with a whistling or whooshing sound and is a synonym for rocket. Sizzle is to burn or sear with a hissing sound. It is fitting of the fire-typing and there is a firework called a sizzler.

Salandromeda

Salamander + Andromeda (Both the galaxy and the goddess of dreams)

This is my favourite at the moment, I think Andromeda captures the femininity and the galaxy/space route very well and Salamander makes for a nice combination

Axteroid

Axolotl + Asteroid

Pretty simple, but still satisfying to say.

Wyvergo

Wyvern + Virgo

Wyvern to attempt to get the dragon aspects covered and then Virgo again plays on the femininity and the star theme.

WIP

Cohetl

A combination of "Coatl" (snake; part of Quetzalcoatl) + "Cohete" (spanish for Firework/Rocket)

Pronounced: "COH-he-tul"

I hope that's the correct pronunciation; I don't actually speak spanish. Fun fact though: Cohete comes from latin cauda, meaning "Tail", which is also appropriate here.

Novaria

A combination of "Nova" + "Aria"

Pronounced: "Noh-VAH-ree-ah"

Citialotl

From Nahuatl citialin, "star", and xolotl, "servant" - essentially, "star servant".

Pronounced: "SEE-tia-LOW-tul"

Given the axolotl basis, I figured it'd make sense to try an etymology similar to the one "axolotl" itself is derived from. A lot of people seem to be going for either magic or fire but I can easily see it being space-related too due to some of the most iconic magical girls like Sailor Moon having cosmic themes. I know one of the original inspirations was fireworks, but it also reminds me of a meteor, which ties into how meteor trails were once thought to have been made by flying dragons.

Sadly all of my creative names were for Gravity Monkey's design, but for now I'd like to leave my two cents on how we approach this one.

Specifically, I would point out that the axolotl design elements of CAP27 are very secondary. It's only suggested by the frills around the face, and even then only if the viewer squints. There are numerous official Pokémon already based on the axolotl (Wooper, Mudkip lines). None of their names draw attention to this, in part because it is such an obscure animal and its cultural significance is so particular.

Moreover, the word "axolotl" is a patently Native Mesoamerican construction. Nothing about the CAP27 design reflects that culture. It's more Far Eastern-inspired, taking elements from modern fantasy and pyrotechnics.

What I am trying to say is that the axolotl aspect of CAP27 is the wrong thing to focus on. Or at least, it doesn't feel right. Visually, CAP27 brings a lot more to the table than more recognizably amphibian Pokémon with the same inspiration. I think it would be wise of us to explore the more fantastic elements rather than a real-life newt with cultural baggage that is only dimly represented by CAP27's gills.

I get that the design idea was magical girls but I want to bring up the following: If you saw this design in the wild, would you associate it with magical girls in the slightest? Until I looked at the design notes, I had no clue, and I'm heavily into anime.

I think I'd want the name to be firework based, with some Quetzalcoatl or Dragon tie in. I'm also down for making the name feminine. Maybe I'd open up comets/meteors/etc as options, because I could see them being alternate art interpretations. But honestly, even with the artist intent, magical girl stuff feels like a bit of stretch to me, just based on what I see.

EDIT: Though what The Crusade is a fair point, I'd like to point out that Quetzalcoatl and Coatl are separate from Axolotl despite being similar in sound, and fit this concept closer, so -tl names shouldn't be automatically written off.

Cheeryu

Pronounced: CHEE-ree-ooh
IPA: /tʃɪəruː/

A combination of cheery, ryu (Japanese for "dragon"), a corruption of chi (Chinese for either "energy" or "hornless dragon"), and the phrase cheer you up.

Mahoumera

Mahou (Japanese for magic) + Meramera (a Japanese term for flaring up)

Pronounced: Ma-ho-MARE-uh

This name was hard to fish around for, but I'm glad it's gonna see the sun. I feel it's a very simple, pretty name that just rolls off the tongue, which is something I always look for in names. It also feels rather graceful and elegant, which is a vibe I feel this design really resonates with. Using Japanese in the name also vibes well with the magical girl aesthetic, and it's not like this is the first time Pokemon has done this (Gyarados comes to mind). If you translate the name, it would basically translate to something akin to "magical flare", which seems like a very fitting description for this design.

Vedahlia

veda (ancient texts; Sanskrit word for "knowledge") + dahlia (a kind of large firework)

Pronounced: Vee-Dah-li-uh

Fireworks are strictly regulated in the UK, and one of the few times they are permitted is during Diwali, a Hindu festival which is a major celebration in part due to the British Empire's colonization of India, where India's population became Commonwealth Citizens until Ghandi's independence movement. Dahlia is also an elegant name for a girl (imo) and I think fits Quanyails' elegant design.

Xolita

Axolotl + Señorita

Pronounced: soh-lee-tuh

I wanted to get across its femininity and design inspiration, and I think starting with an X gives it a somewhat magical feeling.
