The Final Countdown (OU Warstory)

I’ve been playing Shoddy for a couple months now, and felt like trying my hand out at a warstory. With my team as follows, I’ll post WaffleSan’s at the end, since I don’t like seeing the opposing team right away when I read a warstory.

Xaqwais sent out Metagross.
WaffleSan sent out Tyranitar.
Tyranitar's Sand Stream whipped up a sandstorm!
A sandstorm brewed!
Every mention of sandstorm will be removed, now on.

This situation works in my favor actually, since I run EQ on my Metagross.

Metagross used Earthquake.
It's super effective!
Tyranitar lost 62% of its health.
Tyranitar used Earthquake.
It's super effective!
Metagross lost 48% of its health.
Tyranitar restored 6% of its health.

Metagross: 52% but about to serve his purpose.
Tyranitar: 44% and about to leave

Hah, so now, this poor Tyranitar needs to switch out, else it’ll be dead.
WaffleSan switched in Swampert
Metagross used Stealth Rock.
Pointed stones float in the air around your foe's team!

Metagross: 52% and needs to leave.
Swampert: 100% + Stealth Rock
(From now on, I’ll only mention hazards when they change)

Can’t take an Earthquake, and even if he doesn’t try to, I can’t really hurt it anyway, so I gotta switch.

Xaqwais switched in Skarmory
Swampert used Stealth Rock.

Skarmory: 100% and ready to go. + Stealth Rock
Swampert: 100% + Stealth Rock

I want to set up spikes since it’s good to get ‘em out early. Not scared of a Rapid Spinner, since a)they aren’t common on Sandstorm teams and b)no one uses them anymore.

Skarmory used Spikes.
Spikes were scattered around the foe's team!
Swampert used Roar.
Xaqwais switched in Metagross
Pointed stones dug into Metagross.
Metagross lost 6% of its health.

Metagross: 48% + SR
Swampert: 100% + SR & 1 Spike

Great, he has a similar strategy to me. I wasn’t able to get up spikes, but I don’t think he’s going to EQ so…

Metagross used Earthquake.
Swampert lost 29% of its health.
Swampert used Roar.
Xaqwais switched in Hippowdon
Pointed stones dug into Hippowdon.
Hippowdon lost 6% of its health.
Swampert restored 6% of its health.
Hippowdon restored 6% of its health.

Hippowdon: 100%
Swampert: 77%

I don’t want him to stay around forever now, so I go for a Toxic, just so he can’t stall out anymore.

Swampert used Waterfall.
It's super effective!
Hippowdon lost 40% of its health.
Hippowdon used Toxic.
Swampert was badly poisoned!
Swampert restored 6% of its health.
Swampert lost 6% of its health.
Hippowdon restored 6% of its health.

Hippowdon: 66% Hurt a bit, but landing that toxic made him feel better.
Swampert: 77% and feeling a bit sick.

So I’m not sure what he plans on doing right now, so I decide to get my defenses up to help stop any threat that comes in (or stays in) and hopefully heal up later.

Swampert used Refresh.
Hippowdon used Stockpile.
Hippowdon's defence was raised.
Hippowdon's special defence was raised.
Swampert restored 6% of its health.
Hippowdon restored 6% of its health.

Hippowdon: 72% with +1 (Special) Defense.
Swampert: 83% and all haha in my face.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen refresh on anything before. That did get me mad though, since I don’t have any surefire way to kill that Swampert. I’ll just heal up before I get roared away though.

Hippowdon used Slack Off.
Hippowdon restored 27% of its health.
Swampert used Roar.
Xaqwais switched in Rhyperior
Pointed stones dug into Rhyperior.
Rhyperior lost 6% of its health.
Swampert restored 6% of its health.

Rhyperior: 94% and feels exposed.
Swampert 89% and is taunting me.

Gah! Rhyperior is my late game sweeper and like to keep it a secret until that late game sweep. Waterfall should be coming, so I’ll switch to…

Xaqwais switched in Vaporeon
Pointed stones dug into Vaporeon.
Vaporeon lost 12% of its health.
Swampert used Waterfall.
Vaporeon's Water Absorb absorbed damage!
Vaporeon restored 13% of its health.
Vaporeon lost 6% of its health.
Vaporeon restored 6% of its health.
Swampert restored 6% of its health.

Vaporeon: 100% and ready to do whatever.
Swampert: 95%

I figure that if he can heal any status ailment off himself, let’s give him a status he can’t heal, since he won’t be able to do anything.

WaffleSan switched in Roserade
Roserade lost 24% of its health altogether.
Vaporeon used Yawn.
Roserade became drowsy!
Roserade lost 6% of its health.
Vaporeon lost 6% of its health.
Vaporeon restored 6% of its health.

Vaporeon: 100% but very threatened.
Roserade: 70% and very threatening, sans the yawn.

That is not good. My team could be destroyed by that Roserade, if it’s played right. I’m not sure if it’ll switch out or not, because of the yawn, but I do not want to risk a Leaf Storm to Vaporeon’s face.

Xaqwais switched in Skarmory
Skarmory lost 12% of its health.
WaffleSan switched in Jolteon
Jolteon lost 30% of its health altogether.
Skarmory restored 6% of its health.

Skarmory 94% and put in a bad situation.
Jolteon: 70% and thinking about having poultry for dinner.

Not a good switch. Dunno if he just wanted to put it out to dodge the yawn and threaten Vaporeon, or did he think that Skarm was coming in. Either way, good move by him, so I have to dodge.

Xaqwais switched in Hippowdon
Hippowdon lost 6% of its health.
Jolteon used Thunderbolt.
It doesn't affect Hippowdon...
Jolteon lost 6% of its health.
Hippowdon restored 6% of its health.

Hippowdon: 100% and felt a slight buzz.
Jolteon: 64% is slowly getting hurt.

Dunno what to do here, so I’ll try to find out more about his team and damage it at the same time.

Jolteon used Hidden Power.
It's super effective!
Hippowdon lost 50% of its health.
Jolteon lost 10% of its health.
Hippowdon used Roar.
WaffleSan switched in Roserade
Roserade lost 30% of its health altogether.
Hippowdon restored 6% of its health.

Hippowdon: 56%
Roserade: 40% and taking a beating every time it comes in

Ugh, it just had to be the roserade to come in. Gotta switch the grass attack so…

Xaqwais switched in Metagross
Metagross lost 6% of its health.
Roserade used Grass Knot.
It's not very effective...
Metagross lost 25% of its health.
Roserade lost 6% of its health.

Metagross: 15%
Roserade: 33%

I’m not sure if Bullet Punch will kill, since I’m not exactly sure how sturdy Roserades are. I’m pretty sure they’re pretty weak on the defensive side, but it didn’t help that I wasn’t even sure how effective steel was against grass/poison. Shows how much I know about my types. =P

Metagross used Bullet Punch.
Roserade lost 33% of its health.
WaffleSan's Roserade fainted.

6-5
Metagross 15%

And finally something dies, and it goes in my favor. It’s good to not have to worry about that Roserade though.

WaffleSan switched in Honchkrow
Honchkrow lost 25% of its health.

Honchkrow used Sucker Punch.
Metagross lost 15% of its health.
Xaqwais's Metagross fainted.
Honchkrow lost 10% of its health.
Honchkrow lost 6% of its health.

5-5
Honchkrow: 59%

And just like that, it’s tied again. Sucker Punch didn’t register in my mind, and I used Bullet punch. I need to switch in something that can resist the Sucker Punch so…

Xaqwais switched in Heatran
Heatran lost 12% of its health.

Fire Blast for STAB damage, don’t want to mess around and over predict.

Tyranitar: 32% + SR and 2 Spikes

And now I definitely feel threatened. You’d think that he wouldn’t have it, since he didn’t use it on Metagross in the beginning of the match, but for now gotta dodge that Flamethrower.

Xaqwais switched in Vaporeon
Vaporeon lost 12% of its health.

Rhyperior used Earthquake.
Swampert lost 13% of its health.
WaffleSan's Swampert fainted.

Xaqwais wins!

Props:
-Entry Hazards/Sandstorm. They are the reason I won. They did their job, and prove how important spinners can be. Maybe I should get one, huh? =P

-Hippowdon for taking care of business. I’m telling you guys, run some stockpile action on that thing. It’s too beastly.

-Hippowdon, Vaporeon, and Heatran deserve some love for the beating they took from Feraligatr.

-Rhyperior for scoring the game winner. I run it with Rock Polish, but wasn’t able to use it. Don’t underestimate it.

Slops:
-Skarmory dying. That switch in was bad, and the match would have been more safe if I had played better and gotten more spikes out.

-The way Hippowdon died. I shoulda had Vaporeon sponge the Waterfall, protect, and risk the second protect. The game woulda been a bit safer that way.

-My writing skills and format I used for this Warstory. Probably won’t write another one, unless I get some good feedback, and a really, really good match comes up. I apologize for any math errors, (which there are)confusion, and bad writing while reading this. I took my basic format from a warstory by Reik, one of my favorites.

To WaffleSan, Great match and I hope to face you again! Here’s his team:

This was actually a pretty decent warstory. The comments could've been a bit better, but at least you didn't just do a recap of the previous turn that so many first-timers seem to do. The format wasn't bad at all either, too many pictures and colors are actually a bad thing. It might've helped to take Leftovers and Sandstorm out after the first mention, though. However, I loved the end-of-turn HP comments.

The battle itself was pretty good too, again better than what first-timers usually post. It's just too bad we didn't get to see your Rhyperior do his thing, I love Rhyperior. :(

In short, it's a pretty good first warstory. Just work a bit on your formatting, particularly removing Lefties and Sandstorm, and being a bit more detailed with your comments, and you'll be well on your way to becoming a great warstory-er.

I felt it was a decent effort for a first warstory. The main thing warstories need are good writing and a good battle.

Writing-Thought you did a good job for the battle you were working with. The thing to remember is to get us in your head so we're thinking as you are. Liked the "Final Countdown" in the background

Battle- The Battle was definitly a let-down. Not only were there big pockets of stalling, but there wasn't much going for the battle in terms of predictions. It did pick up a little at the end though, so I see why you did the warstory :) Definitly some quirky sets going on, Refresh Swampert? That was a small turn-off.

The last thing I would say is definitly make it more visually appealing. I personally dislike colors, so maybe include a sprite match up at the beginning of each new match up. Like
v
or something like that. That should make the next warstory even better.

Yeah, this is an okay attempt.

The commentary is rather shallow and brief and the battle itself was rather average. Not terrible, but nothing great either.

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it.

Like I said, I'll probably do another, only if a really good battle comes up. I will take your suggestions into account, and again, thanks!

You shouldn't have switched when Feraligatr came; after 2 stockpiles waterfall is not that threatening.

Ya I didn't think he'd switch eather or I would have just proceeded to Subing and DDing. I can say as I am WaffleSan.

I remember this battle now, I was trying to sweep my friend with an Arcanine at the very beginning. That was one of two matched with Jolteon after I changed it again, as I seemed to be doing that alot that day.

After reading it, letting Roserade die was my biggest mistake by far, grass knot and weather ball Rock would have come in handy, as well as Toxic Spikes of course. As far as refresh Swampert goes, it's always taking a status beating, so if I'm not running my Countercoating set I decided refresh was worth a shot. :D

And yes Feraligatr is a beast, you seemed to have forgotten about Torrent, stupid Sandstorm your Rhyperior was mine, though there's few other pokes I would have liked to die too.

I thought the comments were too brief, and the battle was okay. Decent effort. But for Meta vs Tyranitar, you talked about having EQ making this an advantage; don't you have Meteor Mash?

The battle was pretty generic, unfortunately. Despite that 'Gatr pseudo-sweep near the end, it was still pretty single sided. The only reason it was close was because you more or less allowed him to set up (he did 40% with Swampert early, yet with 2 stockpiles you still switch =/). Close battle =/= good battle, keep that in mind.

The comments were pretty shallow.

Can’t let Heatran stay in, right?

Dodge the water attack.
Those are not good comments. You could have gone through your thought process and what you were thinking at the time (maybe what he may do next and how you plan to deal with it), or anything other than what you have. Work on the comments, and you'll be fine. The format was good.

For a first warstory, it suffices. Work on the comments.

Oh yeah, don't force a warstory. It seems you're already plotting your next one >__>; They shouldn't be a regular occurrence, so don't get ahead of yourself.

You should have kept hippowdon in against feraligatr. It easily lives the waterfall with +2 defence, then you can slack off and roar him out. The comments were rather lacking, but its fine for a first.

Sprites at the end of the turn help give the reader a better understanding of what is happening, although its not necessary.

The whole: "Highlight to see the ending has been done too much in my opinion."

Okay for a first warstory.
