Staraptor [GP 2/2, QC 3/3]

[OVERVIEW]

Staraptor is a niche Choice Scarf user that can pose a huge threat to offensive teams. Thanks to its respectable Attack stat and powerful Reckless-boosted STAB attacks, Staraptor is surprisingly strong even without a boosting item. Staraptor's offensive capabilities are also bolstered by the low number of viable Flying-resistant Pokemon in the OU metagame. Staraptor can keep momentum in its team's favor with U-turn, allowing it to act as a decent pivot. Unfortunately, Staraptor is extremely easy to wear down due to recoil damage from Brave Bird and Double-Edge, as well as Stealth Rock. Staraptor is also extremely frail, meaning it cannot switch into the Pokemon it needs to revenge kill; this also worsens its already low survivability. Staraptor also can be kept in check with certain Pokemon typically found on offense such as Ash-Greninja and defensive Landorus-T, making Staraptor not as threatening as it seems on paper. It tends to also be outclassed by generally better Choice Scarf users such as Greninja, Kartana, and Landorus-T, as they can provide more team support, more defensive utility, or greater consistency at revenge killing Volcarona and Ash-Greninja.

Moves
========

Brave Bird is indispensable, as it is Staraptor's strongest STAB attack and is boosted by Reckless, making Staraptor very difficult to switch into. Double-Edge is an additional Reckless-boosted STAB move that is used to hit Electric-types such as Tapu Koko and Zapdos. U-turn is a great move on Staraptor, as it takes advantage of the switches Staraptor forces to gain momentum. Close Combat is the best option in the last slot to revenge kill Dragon Dance Mega Tyranitar and hit Steel-types that may try to switch into either of Staraptor's STAB moves super effectively. Final Gambit is an option in the third or last slot to deal a large amount of damage to Pokemon such as Landorus-T and Celesteela that Staraptor has trouble dealing with, but it is usually not worth using over Close Combat or U-turn.

Set Details
========

A simple EV spread of 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe with a Jolly nature and Choice Scarf is used to maximize Staraptor's offensive presence. Reckless is used over Intimidate, as Reckless provides Staraptor with a crucial power boost on Brave Bird and Double-Edge; Intimidate does not do much for Staraptor, as it is very frail.

Usage Tips
========

Unless it is necessary to do so, do not switch Staraptor into the Pokemon it needs to revenge kill, as it is extremely frail. Instead, have Staraptor come in after a sacrifice or through U-turn or Volt Switch from teammates. Try to clear entry hazards before sending Staraptor in, as Stealth Rock wears it down more quickly. Note that Brave Bird is extremely powerful even against checks like defensive Landorus-T and Assault Vest Magearna; use it freely against such switch-ins to wear them down for an easier late-game sweep. However, take care when using Brave Bird against teams with Pokemon that can use it as setup bait and against teams that have Tyranitar. Use U-turn liberally, as proper prediction with it can bring the team momentum.

Team Options
========

Magnezone is a great teammate for Staraptor, as it traps checks to Staraptor like Celesteela and Skarmory and forms a VoltTurn core with it. Staraptor will need entry hazard control to compensate for its Stealth Rock weakness; offensive hazard removers like Kartana and Tapu Koko are preferred choices. Wallbreakers such as Tapu Lele, the aforementioned Kartana, and Heatran can wear down the opposing team to ease a Staraptor sweep and appreciate Staraptor's ability to bring them in safely with U-turn. Another offensive Flying-type such as Mega Pinsir or Tornadus-T can form a great Flying-type spam core with Staraptor, allowing them to overload their checks to allow the other to sweep. Finally, Staraptor appreciates a solid defensive backbone to take hits for it. Landorus-T and Assault Vest Magearna are great choices for this role, as they are extremely bulky and can bring Staraptor in with U-turn and Volt Switch, respectively.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Choice Band is a decent option to make Staraptor a wallbreaker with the power to 2HKO Zapdos and defensive Landorus-T after Stealth Rock. However, such a set almost mandates Magnezone and Defog support, making it difficult to fit on a team.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Residual Damage**: Due to its best STAB moves being recoil attacks, its Stealth Rock weakness, and its frailty, Staraptor is extremely easy to wear down.

**Priority**: Priority from Ash-Greninja, Weavile, Mamoswine, Mega Pinsir, and Mega Scizor can OHKO or deal heavy damage to Staraptor.

**Steel-types**: Celesteela and Skarmory hard counter Staraptor, as they take pitiful damage from Staraptor's attacks and retaliate with their STAB attacks. They do need to watch out for potential Magnezone support, however. Heatran, Magearna, and Bisharp can come in on Brave Bird and threaten Staraptor with their STAB attacks. Stakataka gets a special mention here, as it has the bulk to survive even Close Combat and can use Staraptor as setup bait.

**Defensive Landorus-T**: Defensive Landorus-T can switch into Staraptor and take advantage of it by setting up Stealth Rock, gaining momentum with U-turn, or threatening Staraptor with Hidden Power Ice.

**Rock-types**: Tyranitar, Mega Tyranitar, and Mega Diancie can easily take one hit from Staraptor and OHKO it with their STAB attacks or, in Tyranitar's case, Pursuit trap it. Tyranitar and Mega Tyranitar need to watch out for Close Combat, however. Choice Scarf Terrakion can also outspeed and OHKO Staraptor with Stone Edge.

**Electric-types**: If Staraptor is locked into Brave Bird, Tapu Koko, Zapdos, Magnezone, Rotom-W, Mega Manectric, and both Thundurus formes can come in and OHKO Staraptor with their STAB moves, cripple it with status moves, or use it as setup bait.

  • Staraptor is a niche Scarfer that can pose a huge threat to offensive teams
  • Thanks to a good Attack stat with powerful STAB attacks boosted by Reckless, Staraptor is surprisingly powerful even without a boosting item
  • Staraptor can also keep momentum in its teams favor with U-Turn

  • Staraptor is also extremely frail, meaning it can not switch into the Pokemon it needs to revenge kill
  • Staraptor also struggles with Pokémon typically found on Offense such as Defensive Landorus-Therian and Ash-Greninja’s Water Shuriken
  • It tends to also be outclassed by generally better Scarfers such as Greninja, Kartana, and Landorus-T, as they either can provide more team support, defensive utitly, or revenge kill Volcarona and Ash-Greninja reliably

Moves
========

  • Brave Bird is indispensable as it is Staraptor’s strongest STAB attack and makes it very difficult to switch into (Mention that it gets boosted by Reckless)
  • Double Edge is an additional STAB move used to hit Pokemon that resist Flying such as Tapu Koko and Zapdos (Also mention that it gets boosted by Reckless)
  • U-Turn is a great move on Staraptor as it takes advantage of Staraptor’s forced switches by bringing momentum to its teams favor
  • Close Combat is rather filler, but it is the best option in the last slot to revenge kill Dragon Dance Mega Tyranitar in addition to Steel-types that may try to switch into either of Staraptor’s STAB moves (I don't really like the wording on 'rather filler'. Close Combat is pretty important to overcome Steel- and Rock-types.)
  • Final Gambit is an option in the last slot to deal a large amount of damage to Pokemon Staraptor has trouble dealing with such as Landorus-Therian and Celesteela, but losing Staraptor very early in the game can be detrimental to the teams Staraptor finds itself on (I don't think losing it early on is detrimental, as it does to a great amount of damage to these would-be checks. Its kind of a trade, and if the Staraptor player doens't want to trade, to like outspeed Scarf Lele or something simislar, it can just U-turn out on those.)

Set Details
========

  • A simple max attack max speed spread is used to maximize Staraptors speed and power
  • Reckless is used over Intimidate as Reckless provides Staraptor with a crucial power boost on Brave Bird and Double Edge
Usage Tips
========

  • Do not switch in Staraptor into the Pokemon it needs to revenge kill, as it is extremley frail. Instead, have Staraptor come in after a sack or a U-Turn or Volt Switch (Maybe mention it can come in on imunities though, like Scarf Landorus-T locked into EQ or Choice Specs Gengar.)
  • Try to clear hazards before sending Staraptor in, as Stealth Rock only adds to how quickly Staraptor gets worn down
  • When Staraptor is in, use the appropriate move for the threat that Staraptor needs to revenge kill (I mean, I think this sentence is kind of super obvious, maybe you could ellaborate a bit on how being choice locked requires prediction?)
  • Note that Brave Bird is still extremley powerful even against checks like Defensive Landorus Therian and Assault Vest Magearna, so do not be afraid to use it even if you see these Pokémon switching in
  • Proper prediction with U-Turn can bring the team high amounts of momentum, so use U-Turn liberally

Team Options
========

  • Magnezone is a great teamate for Staraptor as it traps Celesteela and Skarmory for Staraptor. It can also form a Volt-Turn core with Staraptor
  • Staraptor will need hazard control to compensate its Stealth Rock weakness. More offensive choices are preferred, making Latios, Kartana, and Tapu Koko good choices for this.
  • Wallbreakers such as Tapu Lele, the affromentioned Kartana, and Heatran can wear down the opposing team to ease a Staraptor sweep. They also appreciate Staraptor’s U-Turn support
  • Staraptor needs to be paired with a solid Volcarona answer as Staraptor is too slow to reliably revenge kill it. Heatran, Mantine, and Mega Tyranitar are good choices for this role. (Staraptor isn't too slow to revenge kill it, just mention they Speed tie, making it inconsistent to have Scarf Staraptor as your sole Volcarona check.)
  • Finally, Staraptor appreciates a solid defensive backbone to take hits for it. Landorus-Therian and Assault Vest Magearna are great choices for this role. They are extremley bulky, and can bring Staraptor in with Volt Switch and U-Turn respectively.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Z Mirror Move is a decent option for a wallbreaker, but it suffers from requiring too much support and facing too much competition from other wallbreakers such as Hoopa Unbound and Kartana (I'd honestly axe this mention and give a stronger emphasis to Choice Band, but leave that up to QC.)
  • Choice Band is also an option for an extremley powerful wallbreaker, but it faces many of the same problems that Z Mirror Move has
Checks and Counters

**Priority**: Priority from Ash-Greninja, Weavile, Mamoswine, Mega Pinsir, and Mega Scizor can OHKO or deal heavy damage to Staraptor with their priority attacks.

**Steel-types**: Celesteela and Skarmory hard counter Staraptor as they take pitiful damage from anything Staraptor can throw at them, while Skarmory and Celesteela retaliate with their STAB attacks. They do need to watch out for potential Magnezone support, however. Heatran, Magearna, and Bisharp can come in on Brave Bird and threaten Staraptor with their STAB attacks. Stakataka gets a special mention here as it has the bulk to survive even Close Combat and can use Staraptor as setup bait.

**Defensive Landorus-Therian**: Defensive Landorus-Therian can switch in and take advantage of Staraptor by setting up Stealth Rock, gaining momentum with U-Turn, or threaten Staraptor with Hidden Power Ice.

**Rock-types**: Both formes of Tyranitar and Mega Diancie can easily take one hit and OHKO it with their stab attacks or, in Tyranitar’s case, Pursuit trap it. Choice Scarf Terrakion can also outspeed and OHKO Staraptor with Stone Edge. (mention Tyranitar should be careful of Close Combat.)

**Electric-types**: If Staraptor is locked into Brave Bird, Tapu Koko, Zapdos, Magnezone, Rotom-Wash, Mega Manectric, and both Thundurus formes can come in and OHKO Staraptor with their STAB moves, cripple it with Status moves, or use it as setup-bait.

change the part of team options on Volcarona to note that they speed tie, not necessarily that it is "too slow" -- or you can say too slow to reliably revenge kill due to the speed tie, I suppose

you can also add a part to that section perhaps about Mega Pinsir in a sorta Bird Spam sense as I have ran into that a few times on the ladder and it also works well with Defog and Magnezone, as you already mention

you can throw defog or toxic as filler into the OO, I suppose

Just a veeeeeeeery small nitpick in team options

"Landorus-Therian and Assault Vest Magearna are great choices for this role. They are extremley bulky, and can bring Staraptor in with Volt Switch and U-Turn respectively. "

It should be "U-Turn and Volt Switch respectively" due to the order you mentioned them

team options - the volcarona thing seems way too specific to mention, and is already covered in the overview, imo remove it

other options - z mirror move probably shouldn't be mentioned at all

rest looks great tho, nice job

More offensive choices are preferred, making Latios
I wouldnt mention latios (at least not first) cause scarf is redundant here and other non mega sets arent that relevant, just keep kart and koko.

I’m not sure about toxic and defog in oo cause the former is a big momentum sink coming off a mon that’s already difficult to get in and lol defog raptor.

Overall nice job but please proofread this before sending it to gp because theres a few mistakes you can easily fix by rereading the analysis and this helps you for future analyses, 3/3

[OVERVIEW]

Staraptor is a niche Choice Scarf user that can pose a huge threat to offensive teams. Thanks to a its respectable Attack stat with and powerful Reckless-boosted STAB attacks boosted by Reckless, Staraptor is surprisingly powerful strong (repetitive) even without a boosting item. This only bolestered Staraptor's offensive capabilities are also bolstered by the scarce amount Pokemon that resist Flying-Type moves low number of viable Flying-resistant Pokemon in the OU metagame. Staraptor can also keep momentum in its team favor with U-Turn U-turn, allowing it to act as a decent pivot. Unfortunately, Staraptor is extremely easy to wear down due to recoil damage from Brave Bird and Double Edge, as well as Stealth Rock. Staraptor is also extremely frail, meaning it can not switch into the Pokemon it needs to revenge kill; this also worsens its already low survivabilty survivability. Staraptor also can be kept in check with certain Pokémon Pokemon typically found on offense such as Ash-Greninja’s Water Shuriken Ash-Greninja (water shuriken is not a pokemon and all ash grens run shuriken) and Defensive Landorus-Therian defensive Landorus-T, making Staraptor not as threatening as it seems on paper. It tends to also be outclassed by generally better Choice Scarf users such as Greninja, Kartana, and Landorus-T, as they can provide more team support, more defensive utitly utility, or greater consistency at revenge kill killing Volcarona and Ash-Greninja reliably.

Double Edge is an additional Reckless-boosted STAB move boosted by Reckless and that is used to hit Pokemon that resist Flying-type attacks Electric-types such as Tapu Koko and Zapdos. U-Turn U-turn is a great move on Staraptor, (AC) as it takes advantage of Staraptor’s forced switches by bringing the switches Staraptor forces to gain momentum to its teams favor. Close Combat is the best option in the last slot to revenge kill Dragon Dance Mega Tyranitar in addition to and hit Steel-types that may try to switch into either of Staraptor’s Staraptor's STAB moves super effectively. Usage Tips

Unless if one deems it it is nessessary to do so, do not switch in Staraptor into the Pokemon it needs to revenge kill, as it is extremley extremely frail. Instead, have Staraptor come in after a sacrafice sacrifice, or through U-Turn U-turn or Volt Switch from teammates. Try to clear entry hazards before sending Staraptor in, as Stealth Rock only adds to how quickly Staraptor gets worn down; losing Staraptor can be detrimental to the teams Staraptor finds itself on wears it down more quickly. (fluff; removed linebreak) Note that Brave Bird is still extremley extremely powerful even against checks like Defensive Landorus Therian defensive Landorus-T and Assault Vest Magearna, so do not be afraid to use it even if you see these Pokemon switching in; wearing down these Pokemon is crucial for a Staraptor sweep Magearna; use it freely against such switch-ins to wear them down for an easier late-game sweep. However, take care when using Brave Bird against teams with pokemon who Pokemon that can use it as setup bait, or bait and against teams that have Tyranitar. Proper Use U-turn liberally, as proper prediction with U-Turn it can bring the team high amounts of momentum, (RC) so use U-Turn liberally.

Wallbreakers such as Tapu Lele, the affromentioned aforementioned Kartana, and Heatran can wear down the opposing team to ease a Staraptor sweep. They also appreciate Staraptor’s U-Turn support giving them free turns to bring in the hurt sweep and appreciate Staraptor's ability to bring them in safely with U-turn. Another offensive Flying-type such as Mega Pinsir or Tornadus-T can form a great Flying-spam Flying spam core with Staraptor, allowing them to overload their checks to allow the other to sweep. Finally, Staraptor appreciates a solid defensive backbone to take hits for it. Landorus-T and Assault Vest Magearna are great choices for this role. Choice Band is a decent option to make Staraptor a wallbreaker with the power to 2HKO Zapdos and Defensive defensive Landorus-T after Stealth Rock. However, such a set almost mandatates mandates Magnezone and Defog support, making it difficult to fit on a team.
