[STABmons] Altaria

{ QC: / / }
{ GP:
/ }
[OVERVIEW]
  • Has a very powerful Fairy-type Extreme Speed, which has high priority and has very few switch ins in general due to access to an insanely powerful Boomburst.
  • Has perfect coverage with either Earthquake / Fire Blast to hit the Poison- and Steel-type Pokemon that resist Fairy-type moves.
  • With access to boosting in Swords Dance, along with Roost to keep Mega Altaria healthy, Mega Altaria is a pain in any team's side.
  • Excellent bulk and typing gives it the ability to check a variety of threats such as Thundurus, Landorus-T, and both Mega Charizard formes.
  • Access to a variety of luring moves makes Mega Altaria even more difficult to switch in. These include Draco Meteor or Dragon Ascent.
  • Altaria is an awful pre-Mega, and is unable to switch into really anything. The Stealth Rock weakness sucks also.
  • Besides that, Mega Altaria really does not have that many flaws. Perhaps having the issue of choosing Earthquake or Fire Blast, but even that is really easy to overcome through your team members.
  • Offensive pressure does suck though, and not setting up can leave Mega Altaria with a bit less pressure on the opponent's team. You gotta maintain presence.

Moves
========
  • Swords Dance transforms Mega Altaria into an insanely powerful threat due to not much being able to switch into +2 Extreme Speed.
  • Extreme Speed is so good on Mega Altaria because it is boosted by Pixilate, and its high priority makes it difficult for offensive teams to stomach.
  • Earthquake smashes Heatran in, and it hits Mega Scizor for a bit more damage than anything else. Overall good coverage, and it hits Poison-types.
  • Roost keeps Mega Altaria healthy and allows it to garner multiple boosts in a game. It alleviates Altaria's Stealth Rock weakness as well.
  • Fire Blast can be used in the last slot to lure in Ferrothorn and Mega Scizor, though Roost is generally preferred.
  • Fake Out is an option to revenge kill faster opposing Pokemon that threaten with their own Extreme Speed, but it's relatively useless otherwise.
  • Finally, Refresh can be used to remove Will-O-Wisp and other detrimental status, but it is very situational.

Moves
========
  • Fake Out + Extreme Speed is useful to pick off threats and due to the Pixilate boost, they pack a punch together.
  • Boomburst is also a very powerful move, packing 182 base power before applying a STAB boost - no joke!
  • Earthquake and Fire Blast are both coverage options to hit either Heatran or Mega Scizor & Ferrothorn, respectively.
  • Mega Altaria can run Dragon Ascent as its "lure" coverage option to smack Amoonguss and Mega Venusaur.
  • Roost in the last slot can increase Mega Altaria's longevity, but it's really hard to give up a coverage move.

Moves
========
  • Extreme Speed is crucial to Mega Altaria's success because it enables it to overcome its somewhat lacking Speed to smack the opponent.
  • Boomburst hits insanely hard and coming off of 252+ investment, not a lot likes switching into it.
  • Fire Blast hits Skarmory, Mega Scizor, and Ferrothorn. It also has generally solid coverage and can even hit Amoonguss.
  • Earthquake hits Heatran, and makes the typical Steel-type switch-ins all perish.
  • Draco Meteor is a solid option for its ability to hit Poison-types, such as Mega Venusaur, for high damage. Catches things off guard, really.
  • Roost, once again, is always an option to use but it's subpar because this set can't afford to lose coverage.
  • Finally, Mega Altaria can run Oblivion Wing as a kind of mitigation to Roost and to surprise Mega Venusaur, but it's quite weak overall.

Moves

  • Roost / Heal Bell keep Mega Altaria and its teammates healthy. Heal Bell > Refresh to heal other partners.
  • Boomburst still hits incredibly powerfully without investment, and is a wonderful option overall.
  • Perish Song forces out boosted sweepers, since Mega Altaria can usually live a hit from a boosted opponent.
  • Haze can also do this, but Perish Song is overall superior since it also works on Pokemon without stat boosts.
  • Body Slam could be run over Boomburst to spread paralysis as well, but it's quite weak in comparison.

Other Options
=============
  • Baton Pass – momentum and is kinda cool in general.
  • Oblivion Wing – hits Mega Venusaur, heals it a bit.
  • Dragon Dance – mention it's not viable here since it's not needed at all.
  • Rapid Spin – provides utility, can't be blocked, has to sacrifice coverage
  • Cotton Guard – makes Mega Altaria incredibly difficult to break through, but meh in general.
  • Pursuit – sole niche of hitting switching latias/latios so they don't have to be worried about later on.
  • Head Charge – hits like a nuke but also wears down Mega Altaria insanely quickly.
  • Lovely Kiss – sleep is awesome, provides a turn for swords dance.
Checks and Counters
===================
  • **Poison-types**: Amoonguss [AV sets can avoid 2HKO from +2 EQ, shrugs off Fire Blast, Sludge Bomb 2HKOes], Mega Venusaur [Walls all sets, can Spore, Sludge Bomb 2HKOes], Roserade [Loses to SD sets, beats every other variant with its powerful Sludge Bomb], and Gengar [Offensive check, OHKOes Mega Altaria with Sludge Bomb, resists Extreme Speed but takes a lot from it]. Crobat is a specialized counter that always beats Mega Altaria.
  • **Steel-types**: Skarmory [Walls non-Fire Blast variants], Heatran [Walls non-Earthquake variants], Mega Scizor [Walls non-Fire Blast variants], Klefki [Walls non-Fire Blast variants because of Magnet Rise], Ferrothorn [Punishes FakeSpeed, has to watch out for Fire Blast].
  • **Specific Fire-types**: Mega Charizard Y fares well versus Mega Altaria, Rotom-Heat walls it entirely, Talonflame can invest in bulk but is sort of shaky as a check, the rare Moltres walls Mega Altaria as well.
  • **Chansey**: Threatens with Transform, beats all sets bar Swords Dance. Can spread status on it, and is really irritating in general.
