Welcome to Smogon! Take a moment to read the Introduction to Smogon for a run-down on everything Smogon, and make sure you take some time to read the global rules.
Congratulations to fanyfan for winning cycle 18! Now let's go for another take:
Cycle 19: Flygon!
Flygon had a lot of roles and approaches through past generations, but it's only seen today as a Scarf user and sometimes a setup sweeper. What can we do with it's movepool of good support options and nice all-around stats?
Flygon @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Dragon Tail / Toxic
- Earth Power
- Roost
- Defog
flygon can act as a second grade gligar in some cases with better typing and movepool in some cases. this set acts as a defogger which isn’t pressured completely by entei. ep allows for you to comfortably risk the burn on flygon and still be able to hit entei for decent damage with earth power. dtail allows for this pokemon to not be setup bait while toxic can be used to punish switch ins. this set can also check tyrantrum if you guess correctly. overall a pretty niche set but has some merits over defog gligar
Flygon @ Choice Band
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Outrage
- U-turn
- Stone Edge
U-Turn for Momentum, Edge hits Moltres, Araquanid and Golisopod super effectively. Outrage as a strong Stab and Erathquake hits Doublade, Drapion, Entei and Escavalier.

AoA Special Flygon
Someone had to do it, 4 attacks Flygon is meant to attempt to pressure some of its usual switch ins, such as Gligar, Forretress, and Bronzong. It also has the ability to function as a one time Entei switch in and not be screwed over by a burn. 252 SpA Flygon Devastating Drake (195 BP) vs. 148 HP / 0 SpD Linoone: 343-405 (102.6 - 121.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
General idea
Do you really think that Swords Dance would be nice but you don't have this move on your movepool?
Screech does a similar think by dropping the opposite threat's Def by 2 points (really good towards Unaware Quagsire), thus mickmicking the effect of its boosting counterpart. 85% chance of hitting is acceptable for a powerful effect like this one: it is a low-risk way to punish pivots because they will be weakened even if Flygon is out from the battlefield.
If Flygon is still in trouble even with an opponent at -2 Def, you will use a fastish U-turn to switch-out and select another teammates. With these simple tactics you are able to pressure heavily the opponent (especially if hazards are on the field) forcing additional switches.
EVs spread and item
The EVs spread is a standard offensive one. The item chosen is Aguav Berry in order to have a way to recover a decent amount of Flygon's HP at once, thus keeping itself protected by another move, but you can choose whatever you want (a classic boosting item is always nice).
A relic of Diamond/Pearl era, this sub-toxic set is designed to annoy the crap out of the opponent. Sub up, then use Earthquake for a good powerful STAB. Toxic for breaking bulky mons and Flying-types. Roost is so you heal. The EVS make it as bulky as possible while still speed-tying with Base 95 Speed Pokémon such as Drapion and Moltres.

My vote goes to Screech Flygon. Remember to vote by Monday!
congrats to Trap for winning cycle 19! now for this cycle:
Cycle 20: Mega Ampharos!
While Mega Ampharos has been severely underrated ever since its drop from UU, its powerful wallbreaking abilities allowed it to gain traction since then. However, it rarely strays from its conventional set and it is up to you, this cycles' innovators, to create the best next thing!
General idea
The combination of Screens + a slow Volt Switch is really too nice to pass up; unfortunately, I don't find the room to include Reflect on this set, but it is possible to drop Thunderbolt if you really need it.
Due to the fact it is a Mega, it is impossible to run Light Clay, but screens can be nice moves to spam if you are torn between using an Electric move (and your opponent has s Ground-type pkmn left) and a Dragon move (and the opponent has a Fairy or a Steel).
At least two attacking moves are mandatory in order to avoid being crippled by Taunt.
EVs spread
8 Spe are there to outpace uninvested base 45 Spe or lower; 248 HP EVs in order to have an odd number to survive one more switch-in into SR. Max SpA + Modest nature because we need to hit hard.
Teammates support
Wish support is really needed in order to recharge Ampharos' health throughout the match. A way to deal properly with Ground types is mandatory; in general, this Ampharos is not self-sufficient because it doesn't have the HP to overwhelm some threats without being worn down easily.
Ampharos can sometimes have a hard time vs offense due to it's terrible speedtier, however Agility patches up that matchup. Timid is required as it allows you to outspeed Scarf Tyrantrum after an Agility which is huge. However, it's still outsped by Scarf Gardevoir, so you'll want to pair it with something that abuses Garde like Banded Escavalier w/ Pursuit.
Sub Mega Ampharos
This Ampharos is meant to abuse your good match ups and set up Substitutes against mons that are unable to break it such as non-Ice Beam Milotic, Mandibuzz, Scarf/Defensive Moltres, Chesnaught, and Rotom-Cut. You can also threaten certain pokemon out such as Mega Steelix, Golisopod, and even Mega Blastoise if healthy, which gives you another chance to Sub up. Then, you proceed to click buttons to hit what’s in front of you. It’s a bonus that Noivern, a threat with Infiltrator that can hit through Substitutes, can’t actually revenge kill that well unless it’s Draco Meteor, which not all are. However, Swellow and Yanmega are still capable of doing solid damage with their own sound moves. The EVs allow Scarf Moltres to never break your Sub, as well as Drain Punch defensive Chesnaught. The fact that you’re a bulkier spread means you can tank Entei’s hits a bit better. HP Ice is an option if you hate Gligar but doesn’t hit much else, if anything at all.

252 SpA Choice Specs Yanmega Bug Buzz vs. 240 HP / 0 SpD Ampharos-Mega: 187-222 (49 - 58.2%) -- 97.7% chance to 2HKO
Thunder Wave Mega Ampharos. Thought about Thunder Wave to slow down opposing Pokemon. Dragon Pulse and Thunderbolt for Dual STAB. And Focus Blast as Coverage Option.
This set uses Cotton Spore to lower the opponent's speed by two stages. It's more accurate than Thunder Wave and lowers the speed of rival Ground and Electric types that are otherwise immune to Thunder Wave. It works a bit like a lure: if you know your opponent switches to something like Flygon or Tyrantrum, then you can Cotton Spore to nullify a potential Choice Scarf. Then you can revenge with Dragon Pulse. Modest is for more power, Timid for more speed.
one of the downsides of using mega ampharos is that it has no way to boost its damage output by using specs/lo or a setup move like nasty plot or calm mind. however, if you think of electric terrain as an artificial nasty plot it can serve as an extremely powerful breaker and turns the tables on conventional answers to it such as cresselia and florges. not boosting dragon pulse or focus blast is fine because you're still able to break through their targets just fine anyways. agility can be used over focus blast for a pseudo double dance set cause tbolt is so powerful under elec terrain it can still break through steel and normal types with some support (altho u have to give up modest to outspeed scarf ttrum):
