  • Fits well on TR teams, support'n th' sweepers by sett'n aloft Trick Room an' us'n Heal'n Wish

  • Hates faster Pokemon that can ohko it such as Krookodile or Sharpedo, so Fighting-types be as good teammates as a pirate an' 'is rum; Poliwrath manhandles both o' them while Mesprit can switch into Psychic-type attacks an' set aloft on weaker Electric- an' Grass-type attacks in return

  • Zen Headbutt be obligatory STAB move that hits unseaworthily hard wi' a Choice Band
  • Fire Punch covers th' rogue Steel-types that resist Zen Headbutt
  • Ice Punch cows threats like Altaria an' Krookodile into submission t' your pirately swagger

  • Choice Band fer hitt'n lustily hard an' wallbreak'n, Choice Scarf t' check threats
[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

  • "Thar She Blows!" Can't hit Sharpedo very salt-blastedly well at all, but non-Trick Room Mesprit basically always loses t' Sharpedo so it's irrelevant
  • Appreciates teammates that can take on physical walls like Tangrowth; Moltres deserves a mention fer switch'n into Bug-type attacks easily an' threaten'n wi' carbunculously powerful special moves

[SET COMMENTS]

  • "Heave Ho!" Mixture o' bulk an' power allow it t' serve as an efficient choice item crewmate on th' special side as well
  • Psychic be th' STAB move o' choice fer its high power, but Psyshock allows Mesprit t' dispatch special walls
  • Thunderbolt an' Ice Beam give Mesprit BoltBeam coverage that allows it t' hit a lot o' things fer neutral damage an', should it carry a Choice Scarf, revenge kill efficiently
  • Trick allows Mesprit t' cripple a wall
  • Choice Specs gives Mesprit wallbreak'n capabilities while Choice Scarf allows it t' check threats
  • Teammates that can take on Special Walls be more helpful than a bilge pump on a stormy ev'ning; Tauros be the salty barnacle for ye cause it can switch into Ghost-type attacks an' deal massive damage t' walls
[Other Options]

  • Many "Where's The Grub!" support sets be outclassed by Uxie
[Overview]

  • Distinguished from Uxie by better offenses and offensive movepool
  • Also has lower speed, making it better for Trick Room
  • Bulkier than Beheeyem
[SET]
name: Trick Room
move 1: Trick Room
move 2: Psychic
move 3: Thunderbolt
move 4: Ice Beam / Healing Wish
item: Life Orb / Leftovers
nature: Quiet
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA
ivs: 0 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

  • Can sweep with Trick Room or support teammates with it
  • Psychic is STAB to hit things
  • BoltBeam coverage helps with sweeping
  • Healing Wish is nice to bring a TR sweeper in at full health
  • Thunderbolt alone has decent coverage with Psychic
[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

  • Krookodile is extremely annoying if you don't have Ice Beam
  • Fits well on TR teams, supporting the sweepers by setting up Trick Room and using Healing Wish
  • Emboar is a cool partner as it helps beat down walls and switches into Dark- and Bug-type attacks easily
  • Appreciates Stealth Rock to assist a sweep

[SET]
name: Weather Support
move 1: Rain Dance
move 2: Psychic
move 3: Thunder
move 4: Healing Wish / U-turn
item: Damp Rock
nature: Modest
evs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

  • This set avoids being outclassed by Uxie because it can actually attack
  • Also has Healing Wish to get in a sweeper scot-free
  • Psychic is obligatory STAB move to hit random things
  • Thunder takes advantage of the rain and also has a neat 30% paralysis chance
  • U-turn is also an option over Healing Wish if you have no desire to sacrifice Mesprit
[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

  • Kabutops and Ludicolo are great teammates to take advantage of the rain
  • You can run an alternate set with Heat Rock and Sunny Day to support a sun team
  • Sawsbuck and Victreebel are great in sun
  • Snover is annoying as it cancels rain and switches in fairly easily on anything but U-Turn
  • You can kill Snover with Bug-, Steel-, or Rock-types; Kabutops is great in Rain and threatens with STAB Stone Edge. Durant also likes Rain's ability to weaken Fire-type attacks and easily ohkoes Snover.
  • Fire-types kill snover if you're running Sunny Day
[SET]
name: Physical Choice
move 1: Zen Headbutt
move 2: Fire Punch
move 3: Ice Punch
move 4: U-Turn / Trick

Well, slap me with a fish! I be sure 'bout the worthiness of Scarf, but I'm nay really confident bout a lead set as Uxie does that better. Actually, Band seems interest'n as Mesprit has a usable 105 Atk. What be your thoughts on th' subject, landlubbers?

Woodchuck, definitely keep the style when writing this up.

U-turn on the Trick Room set can help you get in a slow member safely, if Mesprit is faster than the opponent while Trick Room is up. A weather set with Sunny Day and Heat Rock or Rain Dance and Damp Rock deserves a mention, in my opinion.

Yargh! I give this analysis 2 hooks up!

And I agree with Lesser Smaug; Mesprit does fairly well summoning weather, so if ye feel the need fer a harsh blowin' storm or a sunny sky fer sailin', Mesprit's definitely the crusty sea dog fer the job.

Band set should probably be in the additional comments section, it doesn't really seem much better than the other psychic-type physical attackers, so it shouldn't be a main set.

Why are you talking like a pirate?
I'll fix it when I write up the actual analysis. 9.9

U-turn isn't great on a special sweeping Trick Room set, maybe I could split it into a separate Trick Room starter? Problem is, with a 0 Speed IV Mesprit's going to 'underspeed' most things in Trick Room. As for weather, Uxie does that 100% better so there's basically no point in doing that.
The only good use I've seen of U-turn is in conjuntion with Lagging Tail to ensure a slow U-Turn.

Yeah, makes sense.

I highly disagree with your statement that 'most support sets are outclassed by Uxie', as Mesprit has Healing Wish available, is significantly less prone to being set up on, and in general plays slightly differently than Uxie (mostly due to Healing Wish). IMO it's totally worth it to include a weather support set.

Continuing, what other Psychic-type physical attackers are there in RU? Gallade and Medicham are the only ones I can think of, and neither of them plays similarly to physically attacking (specifically CB/Scarf) Mesprit, since they lack U-Turn. The physical attacker set is definitely worthwhile. Specially attacking choiced Mesprit (with Specs/Scarf) is also totally viable and not particularly outclassed by anything thanks to its bulk and movepool.

QC APPROVED 1/3 with those sets added (or I guess if you can give me a really good reason not to include them).

Yes, I agreee with Windsong. Choice Mesprit can definitely work; you could even fit Trick / Stealth Rock on a set like that.

Well, it's true that mesprit has U-turn for momentum, but i already knew that when i wrote the comment. i just personally think that medicham and gallade outclass mesprit in so many other ways that a band set should just be an other mention, rather then a main set.

love the skeleton

You still need to add a weather set. Mesprit is my favorite weather supporter thanks to Healing Wish and not being a completely free switch for the opponent (unlike Uxie).

Also mention Substitute in AC of Calm Mind.

I'm also not sure about that set order, especially having TR first. I'd go with CM > Weather > TR > Physical > Special.

QC APPROVED 2/3

Umm, making sure people didn't forget because they were distracted by all the pirate talk, but this doesn't have checks and counters section.

On the first set, Healing Wish should be put before Ice Beam, since Krookodile isn't RU anymore and it's one of the few things Mesprit has over other Psychic-type Pokemon that set Trick Room up (excluding Cresselia).

Substitute should be slashed with Ice Beam on the Calm Mind set. Mesprit isn't totally outclassed by Uxie or Cresselia as a Substitute + Calm Mind sweeper due to more power and better coverage.

IMO, U-turn isn't enough to give Mesprit a niche over Gallade as a Choice Bander / Scarfer, since the later has almost everything Mesprit gets including priority in form of Shadow Sneak and an amazing secondary STAB. That's completely relative though, and I'd ask for other people's opinion before making any changes to it first.

On the Weather Support set, Sunny Day should be slashed with Rain Dance (and therefore, slashing Heat Rock as an item) and Healing Wish needs to be the only move on the last slot, since that's what makes Mesprit so unique.

I know the analysis was made for the old metagame, but all you need to do in order to adapt it to the new metagame is to remove the Krookodile mentions, so there's no big deal.

Also, the skeleton is cool as hell, props on that.
