Jellicent Revamp [QC 1/3]

they dropped over discord -tondas
[OVERVIEW]

  • Jellicent is an interesting pokemon with a unique typing and stats, and its access to Recover+Will-O-Wisp allows it to stay healthy throughout the match and spread status effects, making it a great utility pokemon. It also allows it to check threats like Primeape and Alolan Sandslash.
  • It can also run a successful specs set due to its very powerful Water Spout and nice offensive dual STAB coverage, with its Ghost typing notably hitting things which resist water harder like Gastrodon and opposing Jellicent
  • It's Ghost typing allows it to act as a spinblocker, and it has a very strong matchup against most rapid spinners like Hitmonchan and Sandslash-Alola, though it loses to Freeze-Dry Cryogonal. This gives Jellicent a strong niche on hazard-stacking teams.
  • However, Jellicent is very prone to residual damage, though Taunt does mitigate this slightly. It is also kind of passive when used defensively, allowing offensive threats such as Victreebel and Oricorio-E in for essentially no risk.
  • Specs Jellicent is heavily reliant on prediction and can be exploited by threats like Jynx, Lurantis, and Dodrio easily once locked in a move advantageous to your opponent. It also is very easily pursuit-trapped by things such as Stoutland and Skuntank.
[SET]
name: Defensive Utility
move 1: Hex / Scald
move 2: Taunt
move 3: Will-O-Wisp / Toxic
move 4: Recover
item: Colbur Berry / Leftovers
ability: Cursed Body / Water Absorb
nature: Bold
evs: 252 HP / 224 Def / 32 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

========

  • Hex is the STAB move of choice due it's strong base power when hitting statused Pokemon, and nice neutral damage to the majority of the tier.
  • Taunt is used to stop set-up sweepers such as Carracosta as well as to prevent other defensive walls such as Quagsire and Gastrodon from recovering health back or using toxic on Jellicent.
  • Will-O-Wisp is used to cripple physical attackers like Skuntank and Sandslash-Alola.
  • Toxic can be used in place of Will-O-WIsp if the burn you feel is less useful for your team and you would rather cripple opposing walls.
  • Scald is an option over Hex to have Water STAB which can be more useful against pokemon like Mudsdale, but the power difference is not very noticeable on the things it hits harder and Hex generally will be dishing out more damage. Also, the chance of burn on Scald is unnecessary when you are already running Will-O-Wisp.
Set Details
========

  • Colbur Berry's damage reduction allows Jellicent to retaliate reliably with Will-O-Wisp against Dark-type Pokemon and grants it a better matchup against Pokemon with Dark-type coverage like Gurdurr.
  • Leftovers adds passive recovery, making Jellicent less easily worn down by chip damage. This also gives Jellicent a bit more breathing room to use its other attacks instead of clicking Recover more often.
  • The Speed lets Jellicent Taunt Carracosta before it can Shell Smash.
  • Cursed Body generally is more useful than water absorb, allowing you to get some clutch disables on pokemon such as Gurdurr and Kangaskhan which only have one move to break Jellicent, as well as choice-locked pokemon like Stoutland.
Usage Tips
========

  • This set is more defensive which allows the player to more liberally switch Jellicent into what it walls such as Gurdurr and Primeape. It also can be used to spinblock while staying healthy thanks to Recover.
  • It is essential to not let Jellicent get hit by Toxic, as this status effect puts Jellicent on a timer which will greatly hinder its longevity. It also nullifies Jellicent's ability to check some pokemon it normally would such as Gurdurr.
  • While Jellicent does do a good job as a spinblocker, it must be wary of coverage moves such as Hitmonchan's Thunder Punch.
  • Be careful when playing against status absorbers such as Gurdurr and Stoutland; you don't want to burn them with Scald.
  • When playing with Colbur Berry you can reliably Will-O-Wisp dark types like Skuntank and Alolan Raticate since you can tank one Dark Type attack with ease.
Team Options
========

  • As a defensive utility pokemon which also has the role compression of being a spinblocker, Jellicent can fit well on many hazard-stacking teams. As such, spikes users such as Ferroseed and Roselia work wonderfully with it. These two also have the added benefit of absorbing Toxic and also being a solid Electric and Grass type switch-in.
  • In the same regard of being entry hazard-setters, pokemon which set up stealth rock and also share defensive synergy with Jellicent work really well. Again, Ferroseed can fill the role of a stealth rock setter if needed, as well as Regirock and Sandslash-Alola. Regirock has the defensive synergy of being the most reliable Normal Type counter in the tier, while Sandslash-Alola has the added role compression of being a rapid spin user. Jellicent also can switch into the fighting types these pokemon do not appreciate going against.
  • Rapid spin is very important because Jellicent can easily be worn down by all forms of entry hazards. Therefore, Hitmonchan and the previously mentioned Sandslash-Alola could work well for this role. If Jellicent is not on a hazard-stacking team, Defog users work just as well, such as Crygonal, Lurantis, and Rotom-Frost.
  • Offensive pokemon which are commonly checked by water types or fighting types are greatly appreciative of Jellicent, as it is a reliable switch-in when the opportunity arises. Pokemon like this are Simisear, Stoutland, Lycanroc, and Aggron.
[SET]
name: Choice Specs
move 1: Water Spout
move 2: Shadow Ball
move 3: Hydro Pump
move 4: Ice Beam / Trick
item: Choice Specs
ability: Water Absorb
nature: Modest
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

========

  • Water Spout is the STAB Water Type move of choice with its very high base power and perfect accuracy. At max health you can break dedicated special walls such as Audino and Clefairy.
  • Shadow Ball is the STAB Ghost Type move of choice with respectable base power and perfect accuracy. It hits pokemon which are immune or resistant to Water Spout such as Jynx, Gastrodon, and Lanturn.
  • Hydro Pump is a good alternative Water Type move since Water Spout is weaker once weakened enough.
  • Ice Beam is good coverage to hit Grass types such as Roselia and Lurantis, as well as hitting Drampa harder.
  • Trick is an option over Ice Beam due to it's ability to cripple walls that switch into Jellicent such as Articuno and bulky pivot Lanturn.
Set Details
========

  • Max speed ensures you outspeed Jolly Aggron and everything below, allowing you to revenge kill them instead of those threats being able to revenge kill you, despite Jellicent's poor speed.
  • Water Absorb is useful to regain hit points back with good prediction, making Water Spout powerful again.
Usage Tips
========

  • Jellicent is best used as an early to mid-game breaker due to its highest damage output window being when it is at full health. It should be used with the intention to break holes in the opponent's team.
  • Try to keep Jellicent as healthy as possible throughout the match, preferably getting it in play through a slow pivot or well-played double.
  • Water Spout is easily the most spammable move in the beginning when at max health, though you should use Shadow Ball if you predict water-immune pokemon like Gastrodon and Jynx switching in.
  • Use Hydro Pump when damaged enough to where Water Spout is weaker, unless you cannot afford the accuracy drop in the given scenario.
  • If using Trick, make sure your opponent feels comfortable switching into Jellicent with its special wall first, or else you may mispredict and lose your Choice Specs with no gain from it.
Team Options
========

  • Hazard setters such as Regirock, Roselia and Sandslash-Alola work well with Jellicent since it appreciates the extra chip damage. For example, Jellicent can 2HKO Ferroseed after Spikes damage.
  • Entry hazard removal is mandatory to keep Jellicent as healthy as possible. Pokemon like Sandslash-Alola, Skuntank, and Silvally Fairy can be useful additons for this role. The former two have the added utility of switching into Grass Types while the latter can be a designated Fighting Type check since Jellicent doesn't function as that when used as a Choice Specs breaker. It also can bring Jellicent in safely with Parting Shot or U-turn.
  • Physically threatening pokemon such as Stoutland, Aggron, and Gurdurr can break through Jellicent's counters like Rosellia, Lanturn, and Articuno. Jellicent can break through the physical walls that threaten them, such as Regirock and Mudsdale.
  • Pokemon that can switch into grass types work well with Jellicent, such as Skuntank, Roselia, and Oricorio-E. Pokemon that can switch into electric types work well with Jellicent, such as Lanturn. Pokemon that can take advantage of Skuntank if it pursuit traps Jellicent are very useful, such as Omastar, Gurdurr, and Mudsdale.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]

Other Options
=============
  • An offensive set with Recover, Taunt, and two attacks with Waterium Z is an option to be much more threatening while also still spinblocking and checking Gurdurr. However, its undesirable speed tier really hinders the function of this set.
Checks and Counters
===================

**Grass Types**: Grass types such as Victreebel can switch into the defensive set with little to no risk and threaten Jellicent out. However, some of them do not like Toxic or Will-O-Wisp and cannot handle attacks from the Specs set.

**Electric Types**: Electric Types such as Lanturn and Eelektross can take hits from defensive Jellicent pretty easily and threaten it out with Electric attacks. However, Eelektross cannot take a Water Spout very well from Specs Jellicent at all. More offensive Electric Types such as Alolan Raichu also force it out and threaten to set up with Nasty Plot.

**Pursuit Trappers**: Pursuit trappers like Stoutland and Skuntank easily can threaten Specs Jellicent out and KO it with Pursuit. However, neither can switch into Jellicent and really dislike taking a Hydro Pump.

**Faster Taunt Users**: Faster taunt users such as Alolan Persian and the Oricorios can shut down defensive Jellicent by not allowing it to Recover health or cripple pokemon with status effects. Oricorio-E can even use it as setup fodder.

**Residual Damage**: Jellicent is prone to all forms of entry hazards and also dislikes getting poisoned. This makes it difficult to check pokemon it normally would like Gurdurr, and also weakens the power of Water Spout to a point where Hydro Pump is your strongest STAB attack on the Specs set.

Jellicent
[OVERVIEW]

  • Jellicent is an interesting pokemon with a unique typing and stats which allows it to act in either a defensive utility role or a special-attacking wallbreaker role. (this should be two bullets; the first one should talk abt why it's a good utility mon (you can merge that point with the point below and the second one should talk abt specs and why it's good)
  • Recover+Will-O-Wisp/Toxic allows Jellicent to stay healthy throughout the match while spreading status effects. (explained above)
  • It's Ghost typing allows it to act as a spinblocker, giving it a strong niche on hazard-stacking teams. (mention that it has a formidable matchup against most spinners; the only one that beats it is freeze-dry cryo)
  • With a Colbur Berry it acts as a fairly solid fighting type check / switch-in. (this is more of a set details thing, and besides the only fighting-type that uses a dark-type move is gurdurr)
  • Water Spout is an incredibly strong and spammable attack which can punch holes in teams. (this is a moves thing, say that it's a great wallbreaker because of x and y)
  • However, Jellicent is very prone to residual damage and is also kind of passive when used defensively. (mention that taunt can mitigate the latter a bit)(mention that this means it invites in stuff it struggles with, like vic and pom-pom)
  • Jellicent is also unreliable at countering Gurdurr due to the chance of it giving Gurdurr a Guts boost with Scald. (idt this is worthy of a point, you could mention this in another point)(you could merge this with the point above or a point that talks abt how, while it has great bulk, is overwhelmed by a ton of stuff)
  • Specs Jellicent can be inconsistent due to the lack of consistency in Water Spout (honestly this is far from specs jelli's biggest issue. the biggest issue it has is how exploitable and prediction reliant it is. it's also pure pursuit bait bc of its low speed)
  • Despite the flaws, Jellicent still finds itself in a good spot to be used on many teams. (conclusions are useless, really)

[SET COMMENTS]

========

  • Scald is used as STAB move of choice due to its chance to burn (which prevents stuff like dodrio and absol from using it as setup fodder and hard switching on it)
  • Taunt is used to stop set-up sweepers (such as?) as well as prevent other defensive walls from recovering health back or using toxic on Jellicent.
  • Will-O-Wisp is used to cripple physical attackers like Skuntank on the switch. Lastly, Recover is used to regain lost health when necessary, keeping Jellicent relatively healthy throughout the match. (this should be another point, but it's very basic info, so there's no need to include it)
  • hex, but dont slash it
Set Details
========

(and means tht it isnt forced to recover as often)
  • The Speed lets Jellicent Taunt Carracosta before it can Shell Smash.
  • Cursed Body generally is more useful than water absorb, allowing you to get some clutch disables. (mention gurdurr and choice-locked mon like stout and mon tht only have one move to potentially break u, like kanga)
Usage Tips
========

  • This set is used as a defensive switch-in to water types and most fighting types when using a Colbur Berry. (nuke this point, you already cover it in the next point)
  • This set is more defensive which allows the player to more liberally switch Jellicent into what it walls, (such as?) and also to spinblock while staying healthy thanks to recover.
  • With Colbur Berry, this set is a reliable Gurdurr switch-in and can shut it down the entire match as long as you stay healthy and don't hit Gurdurr with status moves. (you can cover this point in the previous one)
  • It is essential to not let Jellicent get hit by Toxic, as this status effect puts Jellicent on a timer which will greatly hinder its longevity. (and ability to check what it's supposed reliably - for example, gurdurr can 1v1 a toxic'd jelli)
  • While Jellicent does do a good job as a spinblocker, it must be wary of coverage moves such as Hitmonchan's Thunder Punch.
  • When playing with Colbur Berry you can play aggressively with your switch-ins, however with leftovers you should play around dark types and dark coverage with proper prediction. (i'd rather have this point explain that with colbur berry you can afford to will-o-wisp stuff like skuntank and alolan raticate)
Team Options
========

  • As a defensive utility pokemon which also has the role compression of being a spinblocker, Jellicent can fit well on many hazard-stacking teams. [SET COMMENTS]

========

  • Water Spout is the STAB Water Type move of choice with its very high base power and perfect accuracy (mention that it allows it to break through stuff like audino and clefairy at full health)
  • Shadow Ball is the STAB Ghost Type move of choice with respectable base power and perfect accuracy (what does it hit? mention that it hits lanturn slightly harder and water immunities like jynx and gastrodon)
  • Hydro Pump is a good alternative Water Type move since Water Spout has inconsistent base power. (just say when jelli is weakened)
  • Ice Beam is good coverage to hit Grass Types (like?) and Drampa harder.
  • Trick is an option over Ice Beam due to it's ability to cripple walls that switch into Jellicent. (mention articuno and bulky pivot lanturn)
Set Details
========

  • Max SpA with a Modest Nature maximizes wallbreaking capabilities.
  • Max Spe ensures you outspeed Jolly Aggron and everything below. (which allows you to revenge kill them and makes them unable to revenge kill you, despite jelli having a poor speed
  • Cursed Body is generally better than water absorb (false, and what is this point supposed to tell me?)
Usage Tips
========

  • Try to keep Jellicent as healthy as possible throughout the match, preferably getting it in play through a slow pivot or well-played double.
  • Water Spout is easily the most spammable move in the beginning when at max health. (mention tht u can predict when u expect smth like gastro and jynx to switch in)
  • Play smart against teams with Guzzlord; letting it in for virtually free is not good.
  • Use Hydro Pump when damaged enough to where Water Spout is weaker, unless you cannot afford the accuracy drop in the given scenario.
  • If using Trick, make sure your opponent feels comfortable switching into Jellicent with its special wall first, or else you may mispredict and lose your Choice Specs with no gain from it.
this section is overall very short and it doesn't really tell me how to use jelli

Team Options
========

  • Specs Jellicent fits well on teams which appreciate it's wallbreaking capabilities but also have switch-ins to its common checks. (you already cover this in the next points)
  • hazards setters
  • hazards removers to keep water spout's power high
  • Pokemon that can switch into grass types work well with Jellicent, such as Skuntank, Roselia, and Oricorio-Sensu.
  • Pokemon that can switch into electric types work well with Jellicent, such as Lanturn.
  • Pokemon that can take advantage of Skuntank if it pursuit traps Jellicent are very useful, such as Omastar and Gurdurr. (merge these 3 points together)
  • Physically threatening pokemon such as Stoutland, Aggron, and Gurdurr can break through Jellicent's counters, (such as?) while Jellicent can break through the physical walls that threaten them. (such as?)(move this point up)
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]

Other Options
=============

  • Hex can be used over Taunt on the Utility set in order to damage pokemon more that are affected by status and have an attacking move against things which resist Scald. However, Taunt is generally more useful due to its stallbreaking abilities as well as its utility in keeping things like Carracosta from setting up. (move this up to moves)
  • An offensive set with Recover, Taunt, and two attacks with Waterium Z is an option to be much more threatening while also still spinblocking and checking Gurdurr. However, the lack of defense and Will-O-Wisp make Jellicent much less appealing than other spinblockers like Oricorio-Sensu and Froslass. (its poor speed tier is its biggest issue over these two, really)
  • Toxic is an option on the defensive set over Will-O-Wisp if it is a more desirable status effect for the team. (this should be slashed)
Checks and Counters
===================

**Grass Types**: Grass types such as Victreebel can switch into the defensive set with little to no risk and threaten Jellicent out. They also resist Water Spout, making it less spammable. (i mean, every grass-type i can think of gets 2hkoed by water spout and despise taking an ice beam)

**Electric Types**: Electric Types such as Lanturn and Eelektross can take hits from defensive Jellicent pretty easily and threaten it out with Electric attacks. (mention that eel can't deal with specs jelli)(also mention offensive electric-types like alolan raichu)

**Pursuit Users**: stout and skunk easily trap a choice locked jelli

**Dark Types**: Dark Types such as Skuntank and Absol can take on Jellicent once Colbur Berry has been activated, and even threaten to trap it with Pursuit.

**Faster Taunt Users**:

**Residual Damage**: Jellicent is prone to all forms of entry hazards and also dislikes getting poisoned. (and?)

**Pursuit Trappers**: Pursuit trappers like Stoutland and Skuntank easily can threaten Specs Jellicent out and KO it with Pursuit. (although they can't switch into it, and they both heavily dislike taking a hydro pump anyway)

**Faster Taunt Users**: Faster taunt users such as Alolan Persian and the Oricorios can shut down defensive Jellicent by not allowing it to Recover health or cripple pokemon with status effects. (mention that oricorio-e can even use it as setup fodder)

Banned deucer.
is the Smogon Tour Season 34 Championis a Past SPL Championis a Two-Time Past SCL Champion
[OVERVIEW]

  • Jellicent is an interesting pokemon with a unique typing and stats, and its access to Recover+Will-O-Wisp allows it to stay healthy throughout the match and spread status effects, making it a great utility pokemon. It also allows it to check threats like Gurdurr and Alolan Sandslash. (Recover + Willo does not allow Jellicent to check Gurdurr since it has Guts.. Pick a different example or rephrase this slightly)
  • It can also run a successful specs set due to its very powerful Water Spout and nice offensive dual STAB coverage. (list a few mons that its coverage hits that Water Spout doesn't)
  • It's Ghost typing allows it to act as a spinblocker, and it has a very strong matchup against most rapid spinners (mention them here) except Freeze-Dry Cryogonal.
[SET]
name: Defensive Utility
move 1: Scald / Hex (Would slash Hex before Scald, you don't need Scald if you run Willo imo)
move 2: Taunt
move 3: Will-O-Wisp / Toxic
move 4: Recover
item: Colbur Berry / Leftovers
ability: Cursed Body / Water Absorb
nature: Bold
evs: 252 HP / 224 Def / 32 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

========

  • Scald is used as STAB move of choice due to its chance to burn. It allows Jellicent to keep pokemon like Dodrio from hard-switching into it due to the burn chance from Scald. (this needs to be rephrased, hex is the stab of choice and Willo literally does everything you have described here, which makes scald seem redundant)
  • Taunt is used to stop set-up sweepers such as Carracosta as well as to prevent other defensive walls (such as?) from recovering health back or using toxic on Jellicent.
  • Will-O-Wisp is used to cripple physical attackers like Skuntank on the switch. (not just on the switch, willo cripples physical attackers in general)
  • Hex is an option to use over Taunt to offer a stronger STAB attack which can damage water-resistant switch-ins a little better, but it is hard to warrant using this over Taunt, due its uses stated above. (no, hex is better than scald and you wouldn't run it over taunt)
Set Details
========

  • Colbur Berry's damage reduction allows Jellicent to retaliate reliably with Will-O-Wisp against Dark-type Pokemon and grants it a better matchup against Pokemon with Dark-type coverage like Gurdurr. (this isn't true at all for gurdurr, this gives it a worse matchup against gurdurr due to guts..)
(naughty nature carracosta to be specific)
  • Cursed Body generally is more useful than water absorb, allowing you to get some clutch disables on pokemon such as Gurdurr and Kangaskhan which only have one move to break Jellicent, as well as choice-locked pokemon like Stoutland. (mention that cursed body is also more useful than water absorb because jellicent is able to sponge pretty much every water-type attack in the tier w/ ease)
Usage Tips
========

  • This set is more defensive which allows the player to more liberally switch Jellicent into what it walls such as Gurdurr and Primeape. It also can be used to spinblock while staying healthy thanks to Recover. (Spinblock against what? Also you should mention that it should be wary of Hitmonchan's Thunder Punch when attempting to spinblock, especially if entry hazards are on the field.)
(ok im glad you added this down here, but this should really be an extension to the first bullet point, not its own.)
  • Be careful when playing against status absorbers such as Gurdurr and Stoutland; you don't want to burn them with Scald. (I mean, Jellicent would always recover first to scout the choiced locked return/ facade and then use willo/ scald accordingly)
  • When playing with Colbur Berry you can reliably Will-O-Wisp dark types like Skuntank and Alolan Raticate since you can tank one Dark Type attack with ease.
  • (Id honestly mention something about not being afraid of staying in against Pokemon like Eel as they volt switch so long as you click recover due to Jellicent's good bulk)
Team Options
========

(Ferroseed and Roselia dont absorb toxic, they are immune to it. Mention that Roselia absorbs Toxic Spikes though.)
  • In the same regard of being entry hazard-setters, pokemon which set up stealth rock and also share defensive synergy with Jellicent work really well. Again, Ferroseed can fill the role of a stealth rock setter if needed, as well as Regirock and Sandslash-Alola. Regirock has the defensive synergy of being the most reliable Normal Type counter in the tier (Regirock doesn't counter stuff like Stoutland, so call it a check), while Sandslash-Alola has the added role compression of being a rapid spin user. Jellicent also can switch into the fighting types these pokemon do not appreciate going against. (such as Primeape)
  • Rapid spin is very important because Jellicent can easily be worn down by all forms of entry hazards. (Just say hazard removal imo since you also mention defog users) Therefore, Hitmonchan and the previously mentioned Sandslash-Alola could work well for this role. If Jellicent is not on a hazard-stacking team, Defog users work just as well, such as Crygonal, Lurantis, and Rotom-Frost. (And in return, jellicent checks Primeape and Alolan Sandslash for these mons)
  • Offensive pokemon which are commonly checked by water types or fighting types (list a few water-types, dont have to mention primeape here tho. maybe go with gurdurr) are greatly appreciative of Jellicent, as it is a reliable switch-in when the opportunity arises. Pokemon like this are Simisear, Stoutland, Lycanroc, and Aggron.
[SET]
name: Choice Specs
move 1: Water Spout
move 2: Shadow Ball
move 3: Hydro Pump
move 4: Ice Beam / Trick
item: Choice Specs
ability: Water Absorb
nature: Modest
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

========

  • Water Spout is the STAB Water Type move of choice with its very high base power and perfect accuracy. At max health you (Jellicent) can break dedicated special walls such as Audino and Clefairy.
Set Details
========

Usage Tips
========

========

  • Hazard setters such as Regirock, Roselia and Sandslash-Alola work well with Jellicent since it appreciates the extra chip damage. For example, Jellicent can 2HKO Ferroseed after Spikes damage. (Regirock also helps against Pokemon like Skuntank and Stoutland)

=============
  • An offensive set with Recover, Taunt, and two attacks with Waterium Z is an option to be much more threatening while also still spinblocking and checking Gurdurr. However, its undesirable speed tier really hinders the function of this set.
Checks and Counters
===================

(And both can be crippled by willo on the defensive set)
