Gligar (UU SandStall)

This time, I have a Stalling set for Gligar. Gligar has access to great Defense and Sand Veil, but there is no UU Stall set for it, despite 12 (yes, 12) sets under its belt. If there's a Little Cup Stall set, then why shouldn't there be one for UU?

EDIT: Before making any arguments, please read my second post to clarify some things. Thank you.

Gligar@Leftovers
Sand Veil
Impish Nature
252 HP/252 Def/ 4 Spe
-Substitute
-Protect
-Toxic
-Dig

Why this set deserves to be on site:
- Easy to switch in, due to max EV’d HP and Defense
- Efficient SandStaller, due to Sand Veil and moveset
- Can stall even without Sandstorm
- Serves as a Physical Tank due to high defense, useful for Rocks that get boosted Special Defense in Sandstorm
- Little Cup Sandstorm stall set in analysis, but no UU Sandstorm Stall set

Additional Comments:
- Dig gives Gligar an attacking move, while also giving it a turn of immunity from any attack
- Gligar cannot be hit by Earthquake during Dig due to Flying-type
- Flying-types can dodge Dig, but are hurt by Toxic and Stealth Rock
- Substitute gives immunity to status, as well as allowing Gligar to set up Toxic

Teammates and Counters:
-Hippopotas, for Sandstorm to help Sand Veil and wearing away the enemy, as well as being able to set up Stealth Rock
-Stealth Rock-setting teammates
-Dugtrio helps to remove Registeel and Clefable
-Altaria can switch out when Toxic’d
-Weezing completely walls this set

You aren't utilizing anything that an effecting Staller/Stall Breaker should use. You are not even utilizing Taunt and Roost for breaking stall and reliable recovery respectfully. Instead, you are using two mediocre moves on a stalling Gligar. You are also using Dig, which is a 2 turn move, which makes it easy set up fodder for sweepers such as Mismagius. If you use an attack, you should be using Earthquake. It's one turn and has more power. The set is just a gimmick if you are not using those moves. This set should look something like this.

Gligar @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Veil
Jolly Nature [-SpA, + Spe]
EVs: 200 HP / 84 Def / 224 Spe
-Taunt
-Roost
-Toxic
-Earthquake

Earthquake > Dig, or you'll attract setup sweepers immune to Ground, and giving Mismagius a free Nasty Plot is never good. And run Roost and Taunt as the primary options over Substitute and Protect. SubRoost might be somewhat useful, but that leaves you with few other options. Haunter also walls it, once the opponent learns the set. You could possibly run a different move over Dig/EQ, like Night Slash or Aerial Ace.

And, not to be annoying, but the proper format is:
(link to Gligar analysis goes here)

[SET]
name:
move 1:
move 2:
move 3:
move 4:
ability:
item:
nature:
evs: (ordered Hp/Atk/Def/SpA/SpD/Spe)
I do like this set though.

Gligar already has a set like this online, but with Roost over Substitute and a coverage move over Toxic, so I really don't see the point of this set. And Dig is terrible for a wall like Gligar because it makes him extremely succeptible to Milotic and such.

Jeez, I knew the Dig vs. Earthquake argument would come up...

First, this is not supposed to be a Stallbreaker. It is supposed to be a Staller. I am sure that I never mentioned anything about breaking a stall, only stalling. Therefore, please don't say anything about how Gligar isn't breaking stall efficiently, because it isn't supposed to do that. End of story. Second, Dig actually gives Gligar one turn of total immunity (barring Burn and Poison), as well as stalling out the enemy more with Sandstorm and Toxic. Third, I would suggest testing the set before rating it, like The Cicada did. You will probably find it useful. I have stalled out many opponents with this set, so I am sure about this working. Lastly, Protect+Dig stalling helps with Leftovers recovery, if you're wondering about recovering HP.

Thank you.

EDIT: I will find some logs that will help to convince you of Gligar's effectiveness.

It doesn't even stall effectively due to having no reliable recovery. Why would you ever use Sub over Taunt on a set meant to be defensive if you do not even utilize Roost? If you were to actually face a skilled opponent, they would just switch to something like NP Mismagius and attempt to sweep your team.

Have you ever seen the Stall Breaker Gliscor in the OU analysis? It stalls AND breaks stall. It's the same moveset with a different EV spread. Your moveset is just a gimmick. It does not utilize Gligar's true ability TO stall. If I were to face a Chansey with your moveset, I wouldn't be able to stall it. I do not have Roost to Recover and Chansey breaks my subs with Seismic Toss. My moveset can easily outstall Chansey with Taunt + Toxic + Roost.

And why would I ever use this over the standard physical tank? It doesn't set up Stealth Rock, it's pure set-up bait for Levitate users, lacks reliable recovery to reliably tank multiple physical threats, and relies on a gimmicky ability with a gimmicky moveset.

EDIT: The Little Cup Sandstall utilizes Roost and Earthquake, unlike yours. Just thought I'd point that out. :)

Okay, I have a battle done where Gligar fares really well. This is only the third battle that I had in about 15 minutes, but it shows potential without Sandstorm. After seeing this battle, imagine it with Sandstorm.

Bolded parts involve Gligar.

So, to wrap up Gligar's performance (whether or not you read): 2 kills, 1 Assist, 1 Persian left at 9% Health. WITHOUT SANDSTORM. If it can do that without sandstorm, then it can almost always do better with it.

I know that you guys probably aren't convinced yet, but hopefully that helped. I'll find some more logs for you guys if you need them.

So much for "without sandstorm".

And the guy you were facing is a noob. Cross Chop + Focus Blast + Barrier Electabuzz?

I don't know if that's ignorance or arrogance...

Anyways, Substitute with no Roost? Dig? Seriously? If Stallbreaker Gligar becomes a set, I would hope it would be more effective.

Also, the log made me lol.
Thank you sir.

@The Cicada
The only way that set would be effective is against noobs who don't know how to play the game. The set gets mercilessly raped by pretty much any Special threat and can't wall any offensive threats due to the lack of Roost. Dig just seals the nail in the coffin for this set. It does more harm than good. It allows any sweeper that has Substitute or an immunity to Ground to set up and have fun.

And a good opponent would never send Mismagius in if they knew the opponent was using Spiritomb.

Just figured I'd throw in something else.

Oh, and I'll be using a 252 HP | 252 SpD +SpD nature Spiritomb for everything below. If you have another set in mind, please, let me know.

Bulky Mismagius completely fucks over the whole Gligar + Spiritomb idea. It Taunts Gligar, so it can't use Toxic, and burns Spiritomb with Will-o-wisp. Any Mismagius set with Substitute (so, basically, every Mismagius that isn't bulky) will set up a Substitute on Gligar. You send in Spiritomb, and they just switch out without harm. Now they know for a fact that you have a Spiritomb, and know to play more cautiously, while you have achieved nothing.

ResTalk Milotic also dominates this set. Rest off the Toxic damage, and destroy you with Surf/Ice Beam. Spiritomb can't do much in response either, beyond Pain Split.

Swords Venusaur just laughs off Dig and Toxic and sets up Swords Dance on you. Spiritomb is easily OHKOed by +2 Power Whip, and 2HKOed at +0. If you decide to go for a Physical Wall Spiritomb, then the Special LO set completely owns you.

SubPunch Aggron causes problems too. If you switch Gligar into Aggron as it uses Substitute, you lose, plain and simple. You wouldn't lose if you have Roost, but hey, you don't. You also have problems with any Aggron with Aqua Tail, since, once again, no goddamn Roost. Spiritomb can do anything to Aggron without Hidden Power [Fighting].

I'll try and think of some more.

I don't think this is the best use of Gligar, as far as stalling goes. I would recommend a set like this:

Gligar @ Leftovers
200 HP/84 Def/224 Spe, Jolly
-Substitute/Earthquake
-Toxic/Earthquake
-Taunt
-Roost

This is a significantly better set as far as stalling goes, pulling off a sort of SubToxic Moltres/Articuno thing without being fucked by SR and with an infuriating miss rate due to Sand Veil and further residual damage due to Sandstorm. This set has the capacity to outstall even Milotic, while your set is actually outsped by most variants and ohko'd. The moves aren't optimal either, Protect is an especially pointless waste of a slot and no instant healing on a wall that can learn instant healing makes QC cry.

Now, as for my set, substitute protects you against bulky waters and other things that try to ohko you with SE special hits. Substitute versus Earthquake is basically a question of whether you would rather lose to Milotic/Blastoise/[insert bulky water or thing with Ice-type attack] or Venusaur/Drapion/[insert thing immune to Poison]. I also slashed in Earthquake with Toxic because if you have Tspikes you can get rid of Toxic and basically have a perfect set, but if you don't have Tspikes Earthquake over Toxic is stupid.
The EVs on mine give enough for a leftovers number +1, enough Spe to outrun +base 81s (offensive Milotic) and everything below, and the Def EVs are just...there (they can be put into Sdef actually if you want).

Basically I think most QC folks would agree that my set is better than yours, so you should probably update your post to reflect my spread. The UU defensive set needs an update anyway, and this can serve as that.

Earthquake isn't there for stallbreaking, it's there because you need a STAB that doesn't make you the easiest thing in the world to revenge kill, given your opponent can just go to Milotic on your predict attack and then lol. Regarding the log, I rest my case, either go with Flare's spread or just maintain the online one.

Okay, there are so many reasons why this set fails it's not funny.

1) No recovery
I mean, seriously?? You're "Stalling", but you don't have any way of recovering health?? That kind of defeats the whole purpose. The only way you're "Stalling" is by "avoiding" getting hit, and even then, this is easy as hell (Your Gligar is slow as hell).

2) Absolute liability
To be frank, Pokemon that don't care about Toxic and Dig (lol, I'll come back to this) completely destroys you. Venusaur is the first Pokemon to come to mind. Dig without any attack EVs is going to do absolutely jack shit. Any kind of mono-boosting RestTalker (I refuse to use the prefix "Cro" unless it is applied to Suicune) completely laughs at you, since Toxic will just be Rested off in the process. Anything with Sub/Taunt will completely walk over you too. Mismagius turns you into complete setup fodder, while you won't be able to outstall anything like Articuno/Moltres either.

3) There is already a Stalling set on site

Yes, it is called "Stallbreaker", but it works 10x better than this set as a Staller, because it doesn't have the two crappy features listed above (Recovery + Liability), or at least nowhere near as bad.

Now, time to answer what the OP wrote:

This time, I have a Stalling set for Gligar. Gligar has access to great Defense and Sand Veil, but there is no UU Stall set for it, despite 12 (yes, 12) sets under its belt. If there's a Little Cup Stall set, then why shouldn't there be one for UU?
Answered this already, but you also failed to notice that the LC Gligar Stall set has Roost, which is just, to be frank, stupid to leave out on a staller set.

- Serves as a Physical Tank due to high defense, useful for Rocks that get boosted Special Defense in Sandstorm
Gligar is not part Rock, therefore doesn't get a SpDef boost.

Thank you.
*Sigh*, please do not use the "go test this set" argument when the set is clearly bad. I am actually doubting whether you've tested this set yourself, because if you have, you would clearly know stalling without recovery is probably one of the dumbest things you can do. This brings me back to your last point. "Protect + Dig gives recovery". Let's see: Turn 1) You Sub. -25%. 2) You Dig +6%. 3) You attack +6%, your Sub gets broken. You Protect +6%. Sub gets broken. You are now at -6%, with a Sub broken and no Speed. What next??

Sorry if I sounded harsh, but sometimes the best way to tell the truth is to be straight forward.

Okay, despite you not liking it, at least slash earthquake onto dig.
This really the best staller, for many reasons pointed out by Shrang,
also, seems like (after testing) Roost could be slashed onto protect to add to it's survivability. Otherwise it really needs a wish-passer. (Think Blissey without Softboil/Wish)

Roost needs to be on this set, and tbh the only reason to refuse it's addition to a set designed to outlast an opponent is stubbornness. Dig also needs to go, since it's too easy to predict and switch to a Water-type when you use Dig, and then kill you when you're forced to stay in and attack. Giving free turns to your opponent is never a good thing, and Dig only works against an opponent who stupidly stays in to take passive damage instead of switching to something like Mismagius and setting up. Also, I highly recommend either changing your EV's to one of the recommended faster spreads or adding Taunt over Substitute, since you aren't going to accomplish much with such a slow Substitute, while Taunt would let you break stall. And rather than stubbornly refusing suggestions that make your set better, maybe try them out and see what we're talking about - especially since you're clearly a new player, I think you're taking the wrong attitude here. If you didn't want anyone to make changes to it, why post it in a forum?

OP, there's an inactivity rule in these forums. Please update this set to reflect QC suggestions. If you're not planning on going through with this let someone else know, because Gligar does need an updated analysis.
