Monotype Empoleon (Water)

[OVERVIEW]

Water
========
* Empoleon has access to various utility moves, including Stealth Rock, Defog, and Roar. This allows it to compress multiple roles, being both a Stealth Rock user and a Defog user.
* Its amazing natural bulk makes it an excellent support Pokemon on Water teams that can fit in on multiple team archetypes, notably balance and stall.
* Furthermore, Empoleon's typing provides it a large number of helpful resistances, notably to Dragon-type moves, along with a neutrality to Grass-type attacks, which is very important for Water teams.
* Besides that, it has a respectable Special Attack stat, making it easier for it to spam Scald.
* It has a low Speed stat, however, leaving it prone to common Taunt users that can shut it down completely, such as Tapu Fini.
* Although its typing provides it a plethora of resistances, it also leaves it vulnerable to common offensive types, such as Electric, Ground, and Fighting.
* Additionally, it does not have any recovery option, making it very easy to wear it down.
* Lastly, Empoleon is outclassed by several Water-type Pokemon in the metagame in certain roles. Mantine and Tapu Fini serve as amazing Defog users, with Mantine having reliable recovery and Tapu Fini having a great Speed stat and several utility moves, including Taunt, Haze, Nature's Madness, and Calm Mind, along with an excellent ability in Misty Surge, giving it an immunity to status for a few turns. Empoleon also faces competition from Swampert as a Stealth Rock user, as Swampert packs a handy immunity to Electric-type moves.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

* Stealth Rock is one of Empoleon's main selling points, wearing down the opposing team and breaking potential Sturdy and Focus Sash.
* Defog allows it to get rid of entry hazards from both sides of the field. This greatly helps out Pokemon that dislike switching in on hazards repeatedly.
* Scald is the only STAB move it needs, as it is one of the most freely spammable moves that limits physically offensive Pokemon from switching in freely, having a chance to burn the foe. This can inflict important chip damage on specially offensive Pokemon and defensive Pokemon as well.
* Roar is an excellent move in conjuction with Stealth Rock, wearing down the opposing team and racking up chip damage on it. Furthermore, it prevents Empoleon from becoming setup bait for setup sweepers, such as Dragonite.
* Toxic is an alternate option instead of Roar that allows Empoleon to beat bulky walls, such as Porygon2 and Defog users that can prevent it from setting up Stealth Rock, such as Mantine.

Set Details
========

* Maximum Special Defense and HP EVs capitalize on its ability to take special hits well, allowing it to become an excellent specially defensive sponge.
* A Calm nature further bolsters its Special Defense.
* Leftovers is Empoleon's only recovery option, and the slight recovery per turn is highly appreciated.
* Torrent powers up Scald when Empoleon's HP goes under 33%.

Usage Tips
========

* Empoleon's main role is to get Stealth Rock up to make it easier for teammates to clean up. Stealth Rock should thus be used early-game in most cases. Sometimes, however, it is more beneficial to prevent the foe from setting up Stealth Rock or other hazards compared to setting Stealth Rock up yourself. In these cases, Defog should be prioritized.
* Roar should be used against potential setup sweepers to prevent them from setting up freely on Empoleon and force them to take damage from Stealth Rock.
* Empoleon's high Special Defense and amazing defensive typing allows it to take special hits very well. These traits should be used to switch it in on special hits and set up Stealth Rock or use Defog depending on the situation.
* However, Empoleon's average Defense prevents it from switching in on physical hits as well as it switches in on special hits. Thus, it should be switched out from physically offensive attackers to a more appropriate counter.
* Empoleon's lack of recovery causes it to dislike getting worn down through chip damage. It should not be switched in on hazards multiple times if it is needed to sponge special hits from the opposing team.
* Once it has set up Stealth Rock or has used Defog to get rid of hazards, it should usually be switched out immediately, as it dislikes taking unnecessary damage.
* Scald is a very spammable move and can be spammed freely against Pokemon that fail to threaten Empoleon. It prevents physically offensive Pokemon, which Empoleon fears, from switching in freely because of Scald's nifty chance to burn the foe.
* Empoleon fails to break through most walls. It should not be used to take them on, as it lacks reliable recovery, allowing to get worn down easily.
* Empoleon fears Knock Off, as Leftovers is its only method of recovery. It should thus be switched out of potential Knock Off users, such as Bisharp.
* Switching Empoleon in as your opponent goes for Stealth Rock is a wise play, preventing Empoleon from taking unnecessary damage through Stealth Rock.

Team Options
========

* Empoleon's ability to compress multiple roles makes it an excellent choice on both balance and stall team archetypes, freeing up slots on the team.
* Lanturn is a great teammate for Empoleon, being able to switch in on Electric-type attacks that threaten it, while Empoleon takes most Grass-type attacks aimed at Lanturn. It also provides support through Heal Bell, curing Empoleon from burns that can wear it down. However, Lanturn exacerbates the weakness to Ground-type moves, which forces the team to run a Pokemon immune to those.
* Rotom-W is another option to take Electric-type attacks aimed at Empoleon, although not as well as Lanturn, while also taking Ground-type moves aimed at Empoleon. Furthermore, it has access to Will-O-Wisp, hindering physical attackers and making it easier for Empoleon to deal with them. Both Lanturn and Rotom-W can provide support in the form of a slow Volt Switch, making it easier to bring Empoleon in.
* Pokemon that dislike switching in on Stealth Rock, such as Gyarados and Volcanion, appreciate the Defog support that Empoleon provides greatly. Gyarados's Intimidate ability makes it a good switch-in for physical attacks, which Empoleon dislikes, notably Fighting- and Ground-type attacks.
* Empoleon's ability to set up Stealth Rock greatly helps wallbreakers and sweepers (RC) such as Manaphy, Keldeo, and Mega Sharpedo to sweep the opposing team.
* Alomomola provides support in the form of Wish, which helps Empoleon a lot, as it lacks any method of recovery, and a switch-in to physical attacks.
* Quagsire and Slowbro are two amazing physical walls that can switch in on threatening physical attacks aimed at Empoleon. Slowbro takes Fighting-type moves especially well, while Quagsire provides an immunity to Electric-type moves. Furthermore, Quagsire puts a stop to setup sweepers due to its ability Unaware.
* Mega Slowbro does Slowbro's job even better and even has a decent offensive presence if it's using a Calm Mind set.
* Toxapex can be used alongside Empoleon, being able to switch in on most physical attacks that Empoleon dislikes taking. It also provides a secondary neutrality to Grass-type attacks, which takes pressure off of Empoleon.
* Azumarill's defensive set that utilizes Sap Sipper is an excellent partner for Empoleon because it becomes the primary switch-in to Grass-type moves, making it easier for Empoleon to perform its job without having to worry about switching in on Grass-type moves that threaten its teammates. Azumarill's Choice Band set is also a great partner, being able to break specially defensive walls that switch in on Empoleon freely, such as Chansey.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Water
--------
* Shuca Berry and Chople Berry are decent options over Leftovers, allowing Empoleon to set up Stealth Rock, Defog hazards, or fire off a Scald against Ground- and Fighting-type Pokemon, respectively. However, these cause Empoleon to get lowered down very easily, with Leftovers being its only method of recovery, and are thus suboptimal.
* Ice Beam can be opted for over Roar or Toxic to hit Dragon- and Grass-type Pokemon for decent damage. However, both Mega Venusaur and Ferrothorn can switch into Ice Beam very easily, barely making it a proper way to check Grass-type Pokemon. It can, however, hit Tapu Bulu, which is a huge threat to Water teams, for a large amount of damage as it switches in. However, Tapu Bulu is hindered by a burn from Scald a lot more than a bit of chip damage, as Grassy Terrain and Horn Leech manages to recover that anyway, and both Mega Venusaur and Ferrothorn dislike the burn more than some chip damage as well.
* Finally, Knock Off is another option for the final slot; although Empoleon's Attack stat is hardly decent, it is useful because of its ability to get rid of the foe's item. On the downside, however, it causes Empoleon to become complete setup fodder against most setup sweepers.

Checks and Counters
===================

Water
--------
**Taunt users**: Faster Taunt users such as Mew and Tapu Fini can very easily shut down Empoleon.

**Passive damage**: Empoleon's lack of reliable recovery causes it to get worn down easily. Switching in on entry hazards multiple times can prevent it from being able to take on the special attackers that it is meant to wall. Furthermore, being burnt means Empoleon doesn't have any form of recovery because the chip damage negates Leftovers recovery.

**Defensive Pokemon**: Defensive Pokemon that can take Scald with ease and have reliable recovery, such as Chansey wall and wear down Empoleon easily.

**Electric-types**: Strong Electric-type Pokemon such as Tapu Koko and Xurkitree can threaten Empoleon with their STAB moves.

**Fighting-types**: Fighting-type Pokemon such as Keldeo and Conkeldurr can switch in on Scald easily and threaten Empoleon with their STAB moves.

**Ground-types**: Ground-type Pokemon that outspeed Empoleon such as Excadrill and Garchomp can OHKO it with their STAB move, although they do fear Scald. However, Ground-type Pokemon with an immunity to Water-type moves due to their abilities, such as Gastrodon and Seismitoad,can even switch in on Scald freely.

Hey there. Are you still working on this analysis? Please post progress within 24 hours or this will be reassigned. Thank you! terrors

Overview:
- At this point, Empoleon's main niche is role compression (as you say later) but let's have that in the first line. It is a Stealth Rock user, entry hazard remover, and takes neutral damage from Grass-type moves. The only reason to use Empoleon would be for that compression. Its bulk / typing just doesn't cut it anymore.
- Grass Knot is never mentioned again, so it shouldn't be in the Overview. Also, I wouldn't mention Ice Beam here either to be honest.

Set:
- There's no reason to stop at the Leftovers number for Empoleon. Just max out its HP.

[SET]
name: Specially Defensive (Water)
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Defog
move 3: Scald
move 4: Roar
item: Leftovers
ability: Torrent
nature: Calm
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD

Moves:
- Defog's line is just a dictionary definition. Can you make this more relevant to Monotype?
- Zapdos isn't a good example anymore. Too many run Substitute + Toxic, which is the better set anyway. Mantine is a much better example to use here.

Set Details:
- Fix the EV line

Usage Tips:
- I somewhat disagree with using Roar to shuffle, its main use is for phazing. In most cases, using Roar makes Empoleon take free damage, and its lack of recovery makes that very difficult to justify.
- After you talking about how easy it is to wear down, I think you should add a line or two about pivoting Empoleon out after it does whatever it's doing. Empoleon really doesn't want to be sticking around taking unnecessary damage.
- Note that Empoleon cannot beat most walls, as it lacks the recovery most of them have, allowing them to slowly wear it down, so it should avoid challenging them and should switch out immediately.
- Add a line about switching in as Stealth Rock is being set to avoid taking the damage on entry.

Team Options:
- Swampert + Empoleon doesn't make sense to me. You would just use Swampert + Mantine. Swampert covers Stealth Rock and Roar while Mantine covers the Grass neutrality and Defog. You would never use Swampert + Empoleon.
- Lanturn's Heal Bell should be mentioned for healing Empoleon of burns.
- Rotom-W needs to be in a different line. I don't want there to be any chance a new player might think it's ok to use Rotom-W over Lanturn. You would use both or just Lanturn, never just Rotom-W.
- Gyarados's Flying typing gives it a Ground immunity.
- "...greatly helps wallbreakers and sweepers such as Manaphy, ..."
- Note that Quagsire is a more reliable check for setup sweepers.
- Add Toxapex for being a good pivot into physical attackers and a more reliable check for setup sweepers. Toxapex also takes some pressure off of Empoleon, as it also resists Grass-type moves.

Other Options:
- Ice Beam is basically just targeting Tapu Bulu that switch in (aren't they scared of Scald though?)

Nice work. Always a pleasure to check your analyses. QC 1/3

How does mantine prevent it from setting rocks? If Mantine comes in, it doesn't do much of anything to Empoleon bar fish for burns, so Empoleon can just set them right back. I mean, I suppose they can sorta use that+predictions to stall out Stealth Rock but a different example like Zapdos that it can hit on the switch would really be better.

* Finally, Knock Off is another option for the final slot, although Empoleon's Attack stat is hardly decent, it is useful because of its ability to get rid of the foe's item. On the downside, however, it causes Empoleon to become complete setup fodder against most setup sweepers.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Taunt users**: Faster Taunt users, such as Mew and Tapu Fini can very easily shut down Empoleon.

**Passive damage**: Empoleon's lack of reliable recovery causes it to get worn down easily. Switching in on hazards multiple times can prevent it from being able to take on the special attackers that it is meant to wall.

**Defensive Pokemon**: Defensive Pokemon that can take Scald with ease and have reliable recovery, such as Chansey wall and wear down Empoleon easily.

**Electric-types**: Strong Electric-type Pokemon, such as Tapu Koko and Xurkitree can threaten Empoleon with their Electric-type STAB moves.

**Fighting-types**: Fighting-type Pokemon, such as Keldeo and Conkeldurr can switch in on Scald easily and threaten Empoleon with their Fighting-type STAB moves.

**Ground-types**: Ground-type Pokemon that outspeed Empoleon, such as Excadrill and Garchomp can OHKO it with their Ground-type STAB move, although they do fear Scald. However, Ground-type Pokemon with an immunity to Water-type moves due to their abilities, such as Gastrodon and Seismitoad can even switch in on Scald freely.
Just getting the ones I wanted.

Good job!

[OVERVIEW]

Water
========
* Furthermore, Empoleon's typing provides it a large amount of helpful resists, maybe a notable example? along with a neutrality to Grass-type attacks, which is very important for Water teams.
* Besides that, it has a respectable Special Attack stat making it easier for it to spam Scald.
Mantine and Tapu Fini serve as amazing Defog users, Mantine having reliable recovery and Tapu Fini having a great Speed stat and several utility moves, including Taunt, Haze, Nature's Madness, and Calm Mind, along with an excellent ability in Misty Surge, giving it an immunity to status for a few turns. Empoleon also faces competition from Swampert as a Stealth Rock user, as Swampert packs a handy immunity to Electric-type moves.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

* Stealth Rock is one of Empoleon's main selling points, wearing down the opposing team and breaking potential Sturdy and Focus Sash.
* Defog allows it to get rid of hazards from both sides of the field.

Set Details
========

* Maximum Special Defense and HP EVs capitalize on its ability to take special hits well, allowing it to become an excellent specially defensive sponge.
* Calm nature further bolsters its Special Defense.
* Leftovers is Empoleon's only recovery option and the slight recovery per turn is highly appreciated.
* Torrent slightly powers up Scald when Empoleon's HP goes under 33%.

Usage Tips
========

* Roar should be used against potential setup sweepers to prevent them from setting up freely on Empoleon and forcing them to take damage from Stealth Rock.
* Empoleon's high Special Defensive and amazing defensive typing allows it to take special hits very well. These traits should be used to switch it in on special hits and set up Stealth Rock or use Defog depending on the situation.
* However, Empoleon's average Defense prevents it from switching in on physical hits as well as it switches in on special hits. Thus, it should be switched out from physically offensive attackers and to a more appropriate counter.
* Empoleon's lack of recovery causes it to dislike getting worn down through chip damage. It should not be switched in on hazards multiple times if it is needed to sponge special hits from the opposing team.
* Once it has set up Stealth Rock or has used Defog to get rid of hazards, it should usually be switched out immediately, as it dislikes taking unecessary damage.
* Scald is a very spammable move and can be spammed freely against Pokemon that fail to threaten Empoleon. It prevents physically offensive Pokemon, that Empoleon fears, from switching in freely because of Scald's nifty chance to burn the foe.
* Switching Empoleon in as your opponent goes for Stealth Rock is a wise play, preventing Empoleon from taking unecessary damage through Stealth Rock.

Team Options
========

Lanturn, however, exacerbates the weakness to Ground-type moves, which forces the team to run a Pokemon immune to Ground-type moves.
Gyarados' Intimidate ability makes it a good switchin for physical attacks, something Empoleon dislikes, notably Fighting- and Ground-type attacks.
* Empoleon's ability to set up Stealth Rock greatly helps wallbreakers and sweepers, such as Manaphy, Keldeo, and Mega Sharpedo to sweep the opposing team.
* Alomomola provides support in the form of Wish, which helps Empoleon a lot, as it lacks any method of recovery, and a switchin to physical attacks.
* Quagsire and Slowbro are two amazing physical walls that can switch in on threatening physical attacks aimed at Empoleon. Slowbro takes Fighting-type moves especially well while Quagsire provides an immunity to Electric-type moves. Furthermore, Quagsire puts a stop to setup sweepers due to its ability, Unaware.
* Toxapex can be used alongside Empoleon, being able to switch in on most physical attacks that Empoleon dislikes taking. It also provides a secondary neutrality to Grass-type attacks, which takes pressure off of Empoleon.
* Azu Defensive sap sipper set and choice band
* Mega Slowbro

Other Options

Water
--------
* Shuca Berry and Chople Berry are decent options over Leftovers, allowing it to set up Stealth Rock, Defog hazards, or fire off a Scald against Ground- and Fighting-type Pokemon respectively. However, these cause Empoleon to get lowered down very easily, Leftovers being its only method of recovery, and are thus suboptimal.
* Ice Beam can be opted for over Roar or Toxic to hit Dragon- and Grass-type Pokemon for decent damage. However, both Mega Venusaur and Ferrothorn can switch into Ice Beam very easily, barely making it a check to Grass-type Pokemon.
* Finally, Knock Off is another option for the final slot, although Empoleon's Attack stat is hardly decent, it is useful because of its ability to get rid of the foe's item. On the downside, however, it causes Empoleon to become complete setup fodder against most setup sweepers.
