Drilbur

I'm basically updating the whole thing since..yea.

Changes from old one:

-slight edits in non-set oriented sets
-revamped the sets

[Overview]

Drilbur is one of the premier sandstorm sweepers. Both of his abilities, Sand Rush and Sand Force, can be used for sweeping. Sand Rush doubles his Speed in a sandstorm, while Sand Force makes his STAB Earthquake as well as Rock Slide more powerful. Sand Rush is generally superior since the power is more readily available with 19 Attack and a Life Orb boost. Drilbur also has access to a wide physical movepool, and even has access to Swords Dance, which boosts his already impressive Attack. Once set up in a sandstorm, Drilbur can easily sweep due to having a wide variety of options.

[SET]
name: All-Out Offensive
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Shadow Claw
move 3: Rock Slide
move 4: Substitute / Swords Dance
item: Life Orb
ability: Sand Rush
nature: Adamant / Jolly
evs: 236 Atk / 36 Def / 212 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

With good Attack and Speed stats, as well as access to Swords Dance, Drilbur is asking to be used as a sweeper. This set takes advantage of Sand Rush raising Drilbur's Speed. In a sandstorm with 212 EVs, it will reach 32 Speed, which outspeeds every single Pokemon, even those with a Choice Scarf. An Adamant nature is used to raise Attack because it doesn't need anymore Speed. Earthquake is his obvious STAB attack. Shadow Claw is used to hit Gastly, who is immune to Earthquake, for super effective damage. In the third slot, Rock Slide is favored for its power against Bug-types such as Shelmet as well as Flying-types such as Doduo and Taillow.

The debate between Substitute and Swords Dance is dependent on how comfortable you are with prediction. Swords Dance gives more potential to set up once and sweep an entire team while Substitute allows easier prediction and favors more picking one Pokemon off at a time. They both help deal with Sucker Punches too.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Drilbur appreciates entry hazard support. This makes Ferroseed a great partner because he can lay down both Stealth Rock and Spikes. It also resists Water- and Grass-type attacks, and has a high enough Special Defense to take Ice-type attacks as well. Even though Ferroseed is a great partner for Drilbur, he is also one of its biggest threats. It will wall Drilbur's attacks and can use Seed Bomb to hit for super effective damage or set up entry hazards. Magnemite is another good partner for Drilbur because he can remove Ferroseed, and Bronzor, who also walls Drilbur.

[SET]
name: Bulky Sweeper
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Rock Slide
move 3: Rapid Spin / X-Scissor / Shadow Claw
move 4: Swords Dance
item: Eviolite
ability: Sand Rush
nature: Adamant
evs: 236 Atk / 116 Def / 76 SpD / 52 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This set aims to take advantage of the deadly combination given by Eviolite and a boosting move. With enough bulk to survive a plethora of weak attacks, including priority, Drilbur can more easily set up a Swords Dance and plow through a team. Another great advantage is that if one of Drilbur's counters switches in, Drilbur can simply Rapid Spin away entry hazards instead of risking a misprediction. Shadow Claw can be used to more reliably hit Ghost-types while X-Scissor is the best way to get around Bronzor and Grass-types. Protect is also a viable option on most Drilbur sets since it blocks annoying Fake Outs from Pokemon such as Mienfoo.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

With much less power, Drilbur will not be given much of a chance to do anything without setting up, and at that point he should be sweeping. To accommodate this heavy switching strategy, it is recommended that you bring a Pursuit user to get rid of Ghosts. This will allow Drilbur to Rapid Spin more easily and prevent residual damage.

[SET]
name: Stalling Sweeper
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Rock Slide
move 3: Substitute
move 4: Protect
item: Oran Berry / Leftovers / Life Orb
ability: Sand Rush
nature: Adamant
evs: 236 Atk / 36 Def / 212 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This set is essentially meant to stall out the opponents HP until residual damage from entry hazards and weather effects drops it into KO range. For example, you can send in this set to revenge kill Eviolite Staryu by Protecting and Substituting, then using Earthquake when Staryu is low enough.

The choice between Life Orb, Leftovers, and Oran Berry depends on whether you prefer an approach with more of a sweeping nature. Life Orb lets you raise Earthquake's KO range and also makes you less reliant on the Protect and Substitute repetition. Oran Berry lets you stall more turns which can be more interesting with something like Toxic Spikes support. Leftovers does the same, but actually gives you more returned HP after ten turns. This is quite possible with Substitute and Protect.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Toxic Spikes work incredibly well with this Drilbur set. The amount of health and opponent will drop simply in the first round of turns will be enough to beat almost anything that isn't immune. Great Toxic Spike users include Omanyte and Tentacool. Both of which are pretty easy to work in on sandstorm teams.

[Other Options]

Sand Force is a viable option as it will raise the power of both Earthquake and Rock Slide. If Drilbur uses this ability, it should use a Jolly nature instead of Adamant so that it hits 17 Speed. Drilbur has a good movepool that he can work with. X-Scissor can be used to hit Grass-types. Brick Break can be used as well but Earthquake generally does more damage.

[Checks and Counters]

The biggest counter that Drilbur has is Snover. When Snover switches in, it takes away the sandstorm that Drilbur needs for sweeping. Snover is also commonly Scarfed so it will outspeed Drilbur and OHKO with Blizzard. Bronzor is very good at taking all of Drilbur's attacks, but it needs to carry something to hit Drilbur back with, otherwise it might have trouble with Swords Dance boosted Shadow Claw or X-Scissor. Slowpoke can take hits pretty well and hit Drilbur with a super effective Surf or Scald. Koffing laughs at everything Drilbur can dish out and threatens it with Will-o-Wisp. Drilbur is also weak to priority attackers such as Croagunk.

[Dreamworld]

Mold Breaker isn't as good as either one of Drilbur's regular abilities. If Drilbur isn't running Sand Rush for the Speed boost, it is using Sand Force for the Earthquake and Rock Slide power boost. Mold Breaker isn't a bad ability, but it is outclassed by both of Drilbur's other abilities for sweeping.

edit: Rapid Spin can be slashed somewhere here I guess, I just took this straight from po and changed the format with a script so there aren't any slashes.

this is the most ideal bulky sweeper set imo. Shadow Claw is kind of lolwut because Rock Slide kills Gastly and X-Scissor hits Lileep and Slowpoke harder, especially the former. The EVs I gave leave Drillbur with 18 in each defense with Eviolite.

And the EV spread...why the hell do you have 76 Speed xD, 52 is the most efficient way to get to 14. Pretty much what my spread does is trade 1 Defense, 1 Special Defense, and 1 HP for 3 Attack. 18 in each defense is already ridiculous for a sweeper, and you'll be surprised how bulky it is. It survives Lileep's energy ball, Staryu's scald, and some other stuff. 16 attack really isn't strong enough to do anything, especially without Life Orb.

All I'm asking really is to try my set and if you agree that it's more effective, it can replace the current one

Couldn't it be used as an offensive Rapid Spinner on a non-sandstorm team? Rapid Spin / [Toxic / Protect] / Earthquake / Rock Slide, maybe? It trades Sandshrew's enormous defenses and Stealth Rock for the ability to hit things. And get surprise picks on Gastly, Bronzor, and Koffing, I guess. Probably outclassed, but it's still there.

Leftovers breaks even with Oran Berry after five Sub/Protects. Tentacool and Omanyte are Toxic Spikers that have decent synergy with Drilbur.

Hone Claws in OO.

...and Iron Defense?

It gets Return, Aerial Ace, and Poison Jab too.

while I'm at it, you should probably use this ev spread on the last set

236 Atk / 116 Def / 76 SpD / 52 Spe

28 Speed is pretty excellent and you won't need more 99% of the time. All you really need is to outspeed Scraggy and Clamperl. If you want max to tie with Drifloon and Chinchou at +2, you can do that, but you beat Drifloon anyway and no one uses Agility Chinchou ._.

at least an AC mention then?

It's kind of a waste to use that EV spread because you aren't getting hit by anything. The Speed is way more important. Drifloon is very common and so are other Drilbur. Losing to them just to...occasionally take a hit is not a good idea...something you should never be doing anyway.

I guess, but it's still not as good as the other two.
I know. Just saying it has a place if you ever felt like using Drilbur on a non-Sandstorm team.

It IS the fastest SDing Ground-type, now that I think about it.

There should be a mention of Protect on the Bulky Sweeper set. Avoiding Fake Outs is incredibly useful.

iss is definitely right here Protect and Swords Dance on the same set with Eviolite is very, very dangerous. Only a few Pokemon can stop it at +2, and almost none at +4.

Consider this a stamp after you add that in.
