STEEL/FIGHTING

ABILITY IS JUSTIFIED

NOTABLE MOVES INCLUDE STEALTH ROCK, IRON HEAD, BODY PRESS, CLOSE COMBAT, THUNDER WAVE, VOLT SWITCH, CALM MND, POISON JAB, FLASH CANNON, AURA SPHERE, TAUNT AND ROAR, OTHER MOVES LIKE ZEN HEADBUTT AND STEEL BEAM COULD POTENTIALLY WORK TOO

potentially viable tera types include

flying to resist ground and fighting which are common types in ou and uu

tera water, poison or fairy for general defensive purposes,

tera steel and fighting could ran to boosts stabs and removes certain weaknesses at the same time

Cobalion the iron will pokemon has been a force to be reckoned in the uu tier ever since its release in black and white, the few times the UU playerbase forgot who they were and let them fall into ru, cobalion came back better than ever, proving to one of the few pokemon that can actually be considered a uu staple

while fighting isn’t known for defensive qualities, steel is literally one of if not the best typings in the game for its dozens of resists, it works with any typing except rock (bastidon is a fraud) and thus the steel typing helps bring cobalion to new heights, at the cost of having rather common weaknesses to fire fighting and ground

fighting, while turning the one steels best resistances in fairy into a neutral, still brings a load of good traits that give cobalion some offense utility like making it a check to the monstrous kingambit, allowing it to go hand to hand with other steel typing easily and just hitting many mons for neutral or super effective damage

here are two sets that can be used in OU right now, as well UU in the future

Cobalion @ Leftovers/rocky helmet
Ability: Justified
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 56 Def / 200 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Thunder Wave/ Roar
- Volt Switch
- Body Press
- Stealth Rock

this set is designed to give metal brother a good mix of speed and bulk to maximise its utility, volt switch allows for pivoting, thunder wave is for spreading paralysis when needed, body press is stab that hits harder off of cobalion‘s 303 defense than its 216 attack, close might hit harder naturally, but you don’t want to lower your bulk when you specifically invested in it, so body press is could be the best stab here, sacred sword is neat for bypassing defense boosts, but it could end lackluster in terms of damaging those already bulky pokemon, body press is advised for general damage output

56 Def Cobalion Body Press vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Kingambit: 384-456 (95 - 112.8%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO
and thats only the bulkiest of gambit sets, while the damage listed could be considered underwhelming, cobalion outspeeds and walls kingambit and is mainly used on hazard stack in OU, so gambit will be chipped by hazards alot of the time and cobailon can easily fire off more since kingambit can’t do much to it without multiple boosts, kingambit will struggle even with low kick which breaks cobalion apart with five fainted allies as it will have to tera or predict the switch to actually hit it

Cobalion @ Leftovers
Ability: Justified
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Sacred Sword
- Iron Head
- Stealth Rock/thunder wave

this the most likely the set you’re most familar with, while it shouldn’t be used in such a especially power crept OU, it might be solid within its homeland, it could function as a wallbreaker or even a late game cleaner with its natural bulk and steel typing giving opportunities to obtain a boost, stealth rock and thunder wave help capitalise on forced switchins, but thunder wave could fail if the opponent wants to use a ground type as their cobalion counter

+2 252 Atk Cobalion Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 160+ Def Skarmory: 184-217 (55 - 64.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
rather shocking damage for a pokemon that relies on boosts, bulkier sets without speed investment can take more though because its skarmory, dondozo is the new physical blissey and walls it but it might survive the next tier shifts and not invade cobalions space

overall i expect cobalion to do great in UU, but if the tier violently removes him and never lets him back, we know that the generation as a whole is extremely power crept, and that being top tier in a tier last generation means nothing now, but only if cobalion doesn’t finish gen 9 in uu

Even with 90 Special Attack, I think Specs set has some merit, this guy is pretty fast, learns Volt Switch and at the same time Tusk is a natural switch-in, so Aura Sphere, Focus Blast, Flash Cannon, Steel Beam, Air Slash and some random Tera Blast totally delete Tusk, while still damaging Pdef Gliscor (other natural switch-in) pretty hard.
Unlike the frail and terrible Lucario, Cobalion is one of the best Gambit checks you can find.

well we do have better choice specs users with pivoting, its damage output is also a bit low, but it could be used to catch people off guard expecting swords dance or defensive and claim a KO so it most certainly has its merits
