-----

We've had a discussion of movesets, which identified the competitive movesets we intend to be the most viable in standard CAP play. Please see the concluding post in that thread, as well as the following poll, for more information on those movesets.

The following rules apply to all Movepool Submissions:

  • The movepool can contain a maximum of 75 total moves. You may have less than or equal to 75 moves, but not more.
  • All movepools must have all the Mandatory Moves listed below.
  • No movepool may contain any of the Banned Moves listed below.
  • Any move not listed as Banned is provisionally allowed, but may require a legality check if it has competitive implications.
  • The Movepool Leader Scizivire and Topic Leader ausma may add Banned moves during the course of this thread. If that happens, there will be notification in the thread, and you will have the opportunity to remove those moves from your movepool prior to final submissions.

Cresceidon has no pre-evolutions, so disregard the following rules:
As described in this PRC thread, we will be creating movepools for both the pre-evolutions and the final evolution together. When submitting, you must submit three sections, one for each pre-evo and one for the final evo.

You will need to submit a clear evolution method when creating a movepool. This can be via level up or other more esoteric means, but please give it a good reason for whatever you choose.

Final Movepool Submissions must include all of these moves, and they cannot be Event Moves. Submissions that don't have all these moves will not be considered for slating.

Moonblast
Surf
Scald
Hydro Pump
Whirlpool
Earth Power

Recover
Healing Wish
Wish

Thunder Wave
Encore
Taunt
Haze

Endure
Facade
Helping Hand
Protect
Rest
Sleep Talk
Substitute
Take Down
Tera Blast
These moves are banned from inclusion in Final Submissions. Movepools that include any of these moves will not be considered for slating.

This list is subject to minor changes along the course of the thread.

The following moves are all banned:

Knock Off
Glare
Nuzzle
Hazards (Stealth Rock, Spikes etc.)
Hazard Control (Defog, Rapid Spin, Mortal Spin)
Offensive Boosting (Nasty Plot, Calm Mind etc.)

In addition, the following are banned:
  • All legendary signature moves
  • Any move that is unusable in Scarlet/Violet, a full list of which can be found here.
Note that any move which is competitively inferior to a mandatory move is allowed as an exception to the bans above unless explicitly stated otherwise. This includes things such a weaker versions of mandatory STAB and coverage moves.

Below is the Gen 8 Movepool style guide, which may be helpful to look at when constructing your movepool. Note that it is not updated to the Gen 9 standard. Adhering to it is not mandatory.

Gen 8 brought many changes to the CAP process both in terms of competitive and flavour considerations. One of the most significant changes that came about was the standardization of level-up and egg movepools for the Pokémon present in Sword and Shield. As a result of the CAP Prevo Updates, all CAP Pokémon had their Gen 8 movepools edited to conform to the criteria below. You can find the complete movepools here. It is strongly recommended that you consult these movepools before submitting.

• Level-up movepools always have moves occur at regular intervals of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 except for L1 with some Legendary Pokémon having larger gaps.

• The only exception is where if a move would be learnt at the minimum level for a Pokémon to evolve it will sometimes be allowed to move one level later.

• Level-up movepools never contain moves that can be learnt as egg moves

• Attacking moves are learnt in order of base power. It is suggested that submitters provide a clear explanation for why any attacking moves are positioned out of sequence.

• The only consistent exceptions are evolution moves, variable power moves and multi-hit moves, the latter two of which use their maximum and average hits respectively for their placement in the learnset.

• Trapping moves are occasionally treated as having a base power that factors multiple turns of damage and as such may be seen at both the beginning and end of movepools.

• OHKO moves, Counter, Mirror Coat and Metal Burst tend to be placed towards the end of a Pokémon's learnset.

• For evolved Pokémon, the first four moves listed in the pre-evolution's level-up movepool are always listed in the same order but at level 1 instead of their corresponding level

• For evolved Pokémon all other moves that a pre-evolution would learn prior to the minimum level for evolution are always listed at the same level, unless they have been replaced with another move, in which case they must be placed with the other relearner moves at Level 1 before the first four moves in the learnset.

• For evolved Pokémon that evolve by level-up all new moves learned after evolution occur at intervals (2) larger than the pre-evolution

• In the case of dual stage Pokémon this occurs a second time for each stage, meaning that with a pre-evolution having intervals of 3, the middle stage will have 5, and the final evolution 7

• For Pokémon that evolve by Trade, Item or Happiness all moves are always learnt at the same level intervals as their pre-evolutions

• For Pokémon that evolve by Stone all moves are always learnt either at the same level intervals as their pre-evolutions or all moves are learnt at level 1

• For Pokémon that have not evolved only two level 1 moves may be learnt.

• It is suggested that one be an attacking move and the other a status move although this is not required.

• Pseudo-Legendary and Legendary Pokémon are the only Pokémon to consistently learn moves after level 70. It is strongly recommended that submitters are able to justify their choice in including moves above level 70 by looking at similar existing Pokémon.

• Moves that appear in either the level-up or TM/TR sections cannot be included in the Egg move stage.

• An egg move must be able to be passed on through the breeding group of Pokémon eligible to be caught and carry the move in Sword and Shield

• If an egg move can only legally be passed by another CAP Pokémon it will not be considered valid

• The general recommended number of egg moves in Gen 8 is between 3 and 6. It is suggested that submitters provide a clear explanation for why more than that number will be necessary.

• Draco Meteor and Steel Beam are mandatory for Dragon and Steel-types respectively unless they only gain the respective types as in-battle forme changes

• Certain IoA type tutor moves have relatively strict distributions. It is strongly recommended that submitters are able to justify their choice in tutor moves by looking at similar existing Pokémon.

While this is a submission thread, discussion on Work-In-Progress (WIP) and Final Submissions is encouraged so the community can make an informed decision during the polling stage.

Final Submission Post

Only make one (1) final submission post. If you wish to alter any aspect of your final submission, then edit your post. Do not make a new one, even if you delete your original post. Any deleting and re-posting will be treated as bumping and is subject to moderation.

All final submission posts must conform to the following format:
  • The first line of the post must have the words "Final Submission" in bold on its own line. No other text may be included before the bold heading.
  • A blank line
  • A brief explanation of the entire movepool (optional)
  • A series of spoiler tags containing move learn sources, with required moves in bold and repeated moves in italics:
  • A list of 1 - 3 evolution moves. (Optional, if applicable.)
  • A list in the form "#: move", where "#" is a number from 1 to 100 representing the level the Pokemon learns a move.
  • A brief explanation of the moves learned this way.
The list of level-up moves should be ordered from 1 to 100, ascending.
  • A list of moves.
  • A brief explanation of the moves learned this way.
The list of moves should be alphabetized.
  • "Egg group(s): " followed by 1 - 2 egg groups for that Pokemon.
  • An empty list of egg moves, if the egg group is "Undiscovered".
  • A list of the form "move: (parent Pokemon)", if the egg group is NOT "Undiscovered". "Parent Pokemon" is at least one parent that can breed the move onto the Pokemon. The list of parents can be shortened if there are many possible parents.
  • A brief explanation of the moves learned this way.
The list of egg moves should be alphabetized.
  • A list of the form "TM###: move", where the TM number corresponds to the TM for the current generation.
  • A brief explanation of the moves learned this way.
The list of TM moves should be ordered by TM order.

Hey there, after a bit of a break let's get movepools started as well! I know we still have a flavor ability to poll soon, but realistically that shouldn't have much impact on this stage. The changes from our Post-Play Lookback might change things up a bit, but myself as well as the mod team will keep this in mind when checking the legality of the submitted movepools, so you won't be disqualified if you fit in a (required) move that is going to get axed based on PPL results.

As far as required moves go, we can use the lists we defined during our Movesets stage (see above). All of these moves will have to appear on your moveset submission, so make sure to keep an eye on that. On the contrary, we have previously established a few moves that CAP33 should not have in its movepool. At the time, it was only really limited to Knock Off, Glare and Nuzzle, but I've taken the liberty to add a few move categories based on the results of the Defining Moves and Movesets stages and the general competitive direction we've chosen for CAP33. If there are any moves not mentioned that you're not sure about whether it should be included, feel free to ask in the thread or on Discord (as long as you ping me I should see it)!

We're trying to get things wrapped up ideally before Wednesday the 24th, so I'd like to set a deadline for Sunday midnight EST. This leaves me a bit of wiggle room to check things over for legality and time for the mods to get the first poll set up on Monday. Apologies for the shorter timeframe, but doing it like this lines up well due to scheduling a few things.

1 Whirlpool
1 Wish
1 Soak
1 Ancient Power
8 Chilling Water
16 Dragon Breath
24 Misty Terrain
32 Brine
40 Body Slam
48 Surf
56 Recover
64 Moonblast
72 Wave Crash
80 Healing Wish

Kyogre serves as the basis for my sub, so hence why we've got four lvl 1 moves and by intervals of eight.
Soak: All depictions of Soak show the target being drenched.
Ancient Power: Cresceidon is named after a god, and you know the relation with Kyogre.
Dragon Breath: Eastern Dragon Influences.
Misty Terrain: Fog.
Brine: It's seawater.
Healing Wish: So, for all purposes and intents, this is the inferior Lunar Dance.
Egg Group: Amorphous, Monster
Amorphous is self-explanatory, those in the Monster egg-group are kaiju-like in either appearance or nature. I'm also envisioning Cresceidon to be genderless.

TM226: Dragon Cheer

Dragon-type, Fighting-Type coverage, Giga Drain, Curse & Future Sight: Again, eastern dragon influence.
Weather Ball, Windy Flying coverage & Thunder- electric moves: Storms
Uproar, Roar & Hyper Voice: After its cry from the discord (for context, it resembles a whale call & a storm shelter warning. Alluring Voice, while STAB, does not fit at all.
Physical Ice coverage: Almost all Water-types know one Ice move, but Cres having usable Ice-Type moves might be against concept. As for execution, picture broken pieces of icebergs or freezing off parts of its body via Chilling Water.
Ground-type: Earth Power has been axed due to Kenn, sad days. Anyways, tsunamis are related to seismic activity; I initially planned to add Fissure in lvl-up, but it might be bloating. Earthquake is fine.

50 Heavy Slam
55 Hydro Pump
60 Healing Wish
65 Wave Crash

I used Dondozo's level up as a template for Cresceidon's, since they're both single-stage giant water creatures. Basic Water and Fairy moves, with Heavy Slam because huge waves slam into things. I thought Brine was fitting since it's a salty seawater wave.
Egg Group: Amorphous / Water 1

Ancient Power (Gastrodon)
Life Dew (Lapras)
Soak (Golduck)
Twister (Kingdra)
Wish (Gardevoir)

I placed Cresceidon in the Amorphous egg group which contains similarly-shaped non-animal Pokemon like Palossand and Muk. I added Water 1 too because it includes most of the other sea creature Pokemon that aren't "fish" or "jellyfish/crustacean". Other Pokemon with this combination are Gastrodon and Pincurchin, so it's rare but not unheard of. Life Dew and Wish fit its mystical nature, and Twister fits the stormy wave trope. Soak is what waves tend to do to things, and Ancient Power fits because of the primordial nature of oceans.

TM188: Scald

TM193: Weather Ball
TM201: Misty Explosion
TM208: Whirlpool
TM209: Muddy Water
TM220: Meteor Beam
TM227: Alluring Voice

TM list consists of moves learned by most Water-types, including Ice-type moves like Ice Beam and Blizzard. Hurricane fits the stormy wave trope, and Shadow Ball is learned by practically everything magical/mystical. Power Gem and Meteor Beam because of the moon-shaped horn and connection between waves/tides and celestial bodies like the moon. Ground-type moves fit because of Cresceidon's mass being able to cause earthquakes.

Movepool primarily based off of similar bulky/large/magical/support water mons, most notably Alomomola, Dondozo, and Wailord. I also gave Cresc access to some extra tsunami/storm-themed moves like Thunder, Hurricane, Earthquake, and Blizzard. As for my choice of Water 2 as the sole egg group, I figured it made sense as most large/imposing aquatic mons fall under this category, including Dondozo, Gyarados, Wishiwashi, and Basculegion, and no other egg category makes much sense IMO. Cresc has too much of a defined shape for Amorphous, doesn't look like it could be semi-aquatic like with most Water 1 mons, feels out of place with most Monster mons, and isn't quite invertebrate-looking enough to fit with Water 3.

Also, requesting a legality check on strong Ice and Psychic-type coverage (Psychic, Blizzard), as well as Reflect and Light Screen.

My overall goal for this movepool was to mirror single-stage water-types like Alomomola and Dondozo. This would provide a solid foundation before attempting to adapt other moves to Cresceidon’s movepool.

Level-up progression was rather arbitrary. Single-stage mons often learn moves on intervals of 4-6 levels, so I knew I wanted to be somewhere in that range for this movepool. Dondozo already follows a pattern of every 5 levels, so it was more intuitive to adopt the same pattern.

From there, I wanted to establish the level-up motif. Given the size and weight the artist selected, I liked the idea of conveying the imagery of a storm building. As Creseidon levels up, the waves grow larger and more treacherous. I gravitated towards moves like Pound, Body Slam, Double-Edge since they seemed to complement the narrative and were present in the movepool of mons I wanted to imitate. Pound comes directly from Alomomola’s movepool, and Body Slam and Double-Edge appear in Dondoze’s movepool. All 3 appear in Wigglytuff movepool which helps justify having strong physical attacking moves on a mon that cannot effectively use them.

At this point, I lacked a final move for the level-up progression. Most final level-up moves play into the design of the pokemon. For example, a lot of the tree pokemon learn Leaf Storm or Wood Hammer as their final level-up move. This trend made Wave Crash the most obvious selection for the final move.

With 4 damaging moves slotted, it was time to divert attention to slotting status moves. Splash was a light-hearted addition to convey calm seas. Splash is often a level 1 move which made it easy to slot alongside Pound. Mist, Soak, and Haze all contributed to the storm building imagery I wanted. I chose to split Mist and Haze instead of them being learned at the same level. The flavor text of Haze suggests that Haze is black in color making it more appropriate for levels when the “storm is here.” Knowing what I wanted to do, I looked up every mon that learns these moves via level-up. I wanted to mirror the existing learn levels and slotted them into the pattern I selected accordingly.

I had yet to slot any required moves, so, before I got too far into the process, I needed to make sure I wasn’t creating a headache for myself. After checking the list, the only move that seemed obnoxious to slot was Moonblast. Moonblast has very low distribution as an egg move, so it was going to have to be slotted in the level-up progression. I was also lacking higher level status moves to slot. Recover often appears at the end of a movepool, so I decided to slot that too. Everything else could be added as TMs or egg moves.

With only a handful of slots left, I noticed the movepool lacked STAB options. Water Gun, Water Pulse, and Surf were easy additions. Water Gun acts as the first move learned after level 1, Water Pulse fills the need of a mid-power option, and Surf rounds out the late game moves.

Finally, I decided to slot Aqua Ring and Wide Guard. It balanced out the number of damaging moves to status moves and comes directly from Alomomola’s level-up.

The TM list was fairly straight forward. Step 1 was to make sure the required moves were present. Step 2 was to make sure the moves from the level progression were present. From there, I kept the overlap of TMs from Dondozo and Alomomola.

There isn’t too much more that needs explanation, but here is a quick rundown of the less obvious moves. Since I had gone for the rough seas imagery, Body Press and Heavy Slam fit with the other moves already selected and mirrored Dondozo. Psychic, Shadow Ball, and Swift were added to match other lunar design mons like Clefable, Lunatone, and Cresselia. Bulldoze + Earthquake matches other large water-types like Dondozo and Kyogre and is tsunami inspired. Amnesia was known by both Water/Fairy Pokemon (Azumaril and Primarina), so it was added to the mix.

The last major decision was egg groups and moves. Amorphous seemed like a good choice making it compatible with mons like Swalot, Muk, and Gastrodon. It also helped with getting Healing Wish and Wish into the learnset. Similar body shape mon learned Stockpile, Swallow, and Spit Up, so these were the last moves I slotted into the learnset. The last choice was which water group to add Cresceidon to. Water 1 is mostly terrestrial water-types which didn’t seem right for a wave pokemon. Water 2 seemed equally wrong for Cresceidon since it is predominantly fish, squid, and octopus. Water 3 was seemingly the best fit. The group is defined by the members’ resemblance to aquatic invertebrates. Cresceidon has a similar body shape to that of a sea slug which made it easier to add it to the Water 3 group.

Yo, first round of legality checks inbound. I've briefly discussed this with the rest of the TLT and generally we're in agreement about the following:

Moves that can be included on movepools:
  • Dragon Dance
  • Tailwind
  • Soak
  • Ice, Rock, Psychic coverage (or really any coverage that isn't special Ground coverage above 60BP)
  • Meteor Beam
  • Mean Look
  • Trick Room

Moves that cannot be included on movepools:
  • Super Fang
  • Reflect
  • Light Screen
  • Cosmic Power
  • Copycat
  • Flip Turn
  • Shore Up
Note that Earth Power has now been axed from the initial movepool as per the winning Post-Play Lookback package. Any instance of this move on a movepool will be disregarded.

Dragon Dance: This move does not provide Cresceidon much, if any, competitive merit, and should therefore be okay to include on movepools. Accordingly, I think changing the banrule from "no offensive boosting moves" to "no special offensive boosting moves" is in order.

Tailwind: In singles formats this move really is not that impactful if your name is not Fidgit, and even if it was I don't think Cresceidon has the moveslots to make much use of it, so it'll be fine to include on movepools.

Super Fang: This move does have some competitive implications for a fast defensive mon like Cresceidon. While I do not see this move appearing on its main sets, repeatedly clicking Super Fang can really leave opposing Pokémon open to revenge killing. This move should not be included.

Reflect / Light Screen: Both of these moves are really good on fast mons with good bulk. With Multiscale, Cresceidon is almost guaranteed to get both screens up and open up Hyper Offense style teams as a dedicated screens lead. Due to these competitive implications I will not be allowing either move on movepools.

Cosmic Power: Boosting both defenses at once on a Pokémon that already has the chance to regenerate its Multiscale throughout a match versus certain targets sounds really obnoxious. This move should not be included on movepools.

Soak: This move really doesn't see any competitive use at the moment, and was seen very rarely in the past. This move is fine to include.

Ice, Rock, Psychic coverage moves: Given that Cresceidon really values its supportive moveslots a lot more than coverage, I think it is fine to include any coverage moves you might want, within reason. The exception is for special Ground moves above 60 base power, including Earth Power which was recently decided to be too much of a hassle to guess around in our Post-Play Lookback. The cut-off of 60BP really only leaves Mud Shot and Mud-Slap, which aren't too strong but I imagine could make some sense flavor-wise. Any physical Ground moves above 60BP is fine because Cresceidon has an abysmal Attack stat.

Meteor Beam: While this is technically a Special Attack boosting move, it requires a lot of set investment to pull off properly, and usually this happens only once anyway. I don't think Cresceidon wants to invest in Meteor Beam sets given its more defensive playstyle, so it should be fine to include this onto your movepool if you want.

Copycat: We all know what happens when we give a fast mon Copycat, and I don't want to enable these wierd, albeit kind of funny tbh, strategies any further than they already are. Absolutely do NOT put this move on your movepool (you know who you are).

Flip Turn: While it is unlikely this move would get much use at all, Cresceidon forces switches insanely easily and Flip Turn basically gives it a more offensive tool to accrue momentum instead of making progress itself and having some pitfalls offensively to account for, which kind of messes with its concept.

Shore Up over Recover: I'm not really sure if this is very flavorful for this mon in particular, but putting that aside I don't really want to be giving this mon any signature moves for non-competitive reasons, and therefore I think it is unnecessary to allow.

Mean Look: We already have Whirlpool on the required moves list, even though nobody really used it much. Mean Look is much the same save for a few niche interactions where it doesn't really matter anyway, so this move is entirelyn okay to include.

Trick Room: I really don't see a world where you would use Cresceidon as a Trick Room setter, especially when there are better options available in the metagame. If you want to include it on your movepool, be my guest.

Moonlight: While it is flavorfully appropriate for this Pokémon, this move is also just a straight up buff for Cresceidon given that Sun is a very common team structure in the current meta. There is also no precedent for any Pokémon to have multiple healing moves on its movepool. As a side note, I think any recovery move that is a direct clone of Recover (Slack Off, Milk Drink, Soft-Boiled I think are the only ones?) are okay to include over Recover, but not alongside it given that the moves are effectively the same.

---

I'm very happy with the amount of submissions so far, at this pace we can shoot for a slate of decent size for the polls. Keep being awesome!

Heavily based this off of Dondozo's level-up movepool, with using similar moves like Noble Roar, Tickle, Dive and Wave Crash. It fits well since they're both huge and heavy fish.

I would argue the combination of these moves is for sure a competitive addition to Cresceidon's movepool, but individually these moves are not that powerful. Still, after some more thought, defense boosting moves (+2 defense moves in particular) feel like they can distract from Cresceidon's original game plan and become more of a nuisance than a benefit. Therefore I would like to disallow including these on your movepool. Moves that only boost defense by one stage (Harden, Withdraw, Curse, Bulk Up) are fine imo. Body Press without heavy defense investment and defense boosts is kind of weak, so I'm okay with allowing it.

--

For those of you that have not yet final submitted their movepools yet (which at this time includes everyone), please make sure you do so before midnight EST tomorrow! If your movepool is not marked as Final Submission in roughly 31 hours, it will not be slated.

Darn LOL. Gotta replace them then

LEGALITY CHECK: Rain Dance, Draining Kiss and Scale Shot
NOTE DRAINING KISS: Draining Kiss was originally in this movepool, but then I was like "hey a move that allows it to heal while simultaneously dealing damage might be banned" so I replaced it with Rain Dance, which is (probably) much more banned. oops
As for Scale Shot, idk Dragon-type coverage might be banned ig
pls legality check this so i can make this a final submission soon
Hi, I did not see this before now but for future reference, if you're going to need a legality check much later than when you originally posted, just make a new post because it's much more visible. Anyway, all of these moves are fine to me! Draining Kiss is really weak without boosting, and I don't think Cresceidon would ever want to drop Moonblast for it. Rain Dance is a non-issue, you don't really see things manually click Rain Dance unless they also have Drizzle and are trying to override another weather setter switching in and I doubt Cresceidon would be the exception. Scale Shot legit does nothing for this mon. You're good to go!

Yo, deadline has passed and I've checked everyone's movepools over. I'm pleased to say that every movepool that has been Final Submitted before the deadline is legal, and therefore will be on the polls:
