Attitude of Gratitude:
The Happy Place / The Library Crossover Event

The end of the year is a time to reflect for many; it’s also a great time to express gratitude to those who have helped make our years meaningful and filled with nice memories. Here in The Happy Place and The Library, we feel that there is plenty to be grateful for, and we would like to facilitate the opportunity for all you Showdown users to show your gratitude to other users who have helped enhance your experiences here. That being said, we would like to introduce…

Attitude of Gratitude: The Happy Place/The Library Crossover Event

Over the next couple of weeks, anyone who would like to participate will have the opportunity to write a letter expressing their gratitude to another user here. Now, for perhaps the best part…there is no limit to the number you can write! If you feel grateful towards multiple users here for one reason or another, write multiple letters! We only ask that you do not write multiple letters to a particular user. For example, I can write multiple different letters to multiple users, but I can’t write 17 letters of gratitude to Kaiju Bunny (tempting as that is). You never know what kind of an impact expressing gratitude to another person can have.

Letters that target users in unkind and/or inappropriate ways will not be distributed and may result in further consequences. This is a time to express gratitude—not to bully.

Also, as an important note: Some people will undoubtedly write very personal letters of gratitude. These letters will be handled and distributed privately; a few of us will only look them over to make sure that they don’t harass users.

"How am I able to submit these letters?", you may ask. We have an answer!

Just use
this link! It will bring you to a Google Forms document, and it will prompt you with a couple of questions to help us keep track of your gratitude letter submissions and to whom you are addressing each of them.

As a bonus for participating, quills in The Library will be awarded! For all those participating in this gratitude-expressing event, you will be awarded 50 quills for your contribution(s).

Timeline of Events

~December 15: First day to submit gratitude letters! We intend to post a website-wide announcement regarding these events, but first we will advertise across both The Library and The Happy Place and here in Smogon.

~December 28: This will be the last remaining day for users to submit gratitude letters. Submissions will close December 29 GMT-4 at 12 AM.

~December 29-30: We will distribute the letters of gratitude! To ensure that Monita Mail (the method by which we will be distributing these letters to ensure that everyone gets theirs even if they are offline) is not overloaded, we will work on distributing these over a couple of days.

~December 31: The second, team-based event takes place! More details below…

In addition to the gratitude letter writing event described above, there is going to be a wonderful complementary event! Unlike the gratitude letter writing, which will take place over the span of a couple of weeks and will largely be individual (as each person writes individual letters of gratitude), this event will be a fun, team-based event!

This is how the event will work!

  1. Sign-ups will happen over a Google Form document. We will update you with that info closer to the event!
  2. Based on the number of sign-ups, we will divide teams likely into four groups (though this could vary depending on sign-up numbers). We’ll notify through a link of what group each participant belongs to. After this, each group will assign a leader; if there is disagreement about this or lack of consensus, we can assign a THP (The Happy Place) staff member to assist.
  3. Now comes the fun part! The object of this game, as with the objective of these events overall, is to express gratitude. Thus, after the teams and leaders of each team are established, we will give each team 36 hours (we’ll break down the specific timeline once we get closer) to write something positive about the group and each of its members to which it has been assigned. ~For example, if I were on a team and I was assigned another team with Hydro on it, I could discuss what an excellent organizer he is and how his positivity and calm demeanor help progress efforts.
  4. After the 36 hours is up, we shall convene as a larger group! Since people’s schedules/timezones obviously can vary considerably, we understand that some may not be able to attend the actual event, but we ask that at least one person from each group be able to attend. That is important for the event to function well.
  5. Once the subroomgroupchat has been established and the groups are ready, we will begin. How the event will work is that the moderators will take turns reading descriptions of other groups. Important to note: If your group’s descriptions of another group are mentioned, you cannot answer. The objective is for participants of this event to get to know each other and for everyone to celebrate one another. It won’t always be straightforward! Sometimes we may repeat a person’s description, so pay close attention to score your team more points. 2 points will be awarded for a correct answer about the person being described. There may even be a prize awaiting the team that scores the most points.
We hope you all really enjoy these events and participate in them! :) Should you have any questions about the events, please feel free to reach out to the event hosts, +mc56556 (in The Library) and %Hydro (in The Happy Place), or simply ask questions in this thread. We would love to answer any questions you may have!
