UU Venusaur

[OVERVIEW]

With fantastic coverage, the ability to cripple would-be switch-ins with Sleep Powder, and the ability to boost its already good Special Attack with Growth, Venusaur is an effective sun sweeper that isn't to be taken lightly. Venusaur's typing allows it to set up on many Water-types, like Alomomola and Rotom-W, as well as threaten out Grass-types that are weak to Poison like Mega Sceptile and Celebi, which it can OHKO. However, without sun, Venusaur is rather slow and vulnerable to being revenge killed by faster Pokemon like Infernape and Mega Aerodactyl. Outside of sun teams, it's outclassed as an attacker by Mega Sceptile and Celebi and as a defensive Pokemon by Amoonguss. In addition, Venusaur is mostly forced to run a Timid nature in order to outspeed Choice Scarf users like Infernape during sun, undermining its offensive capabilities. Although Venusaur's bulk is decent and its defensive typing is good, it's vulnerable to priority moves it doesn't resist like Ice Shard and Bullet Punch. Sun as a whole is a shaky archetype too, with only Venusaur, Leafeon, and various Fire-types as viable sun attackers in UU.

Moves
========

Giga Drain is Venusaur's main Grass-type attack, allowing it to recover lost HP from Life Orb recoil while also damaging its foe, thus letting it take on bulky Water-type Pokemon like Alomomola better. Solar Beam is another option, allowing unboosted Life Orb Venusaur to OHKO Mega Aerodactyl after Stealth Rock, 2HKO Gliscor, and avoid Liquid Ooze from Tentacruel at the cost of making its Grass-type STAB move almost completely useless outside of sun, preventing Venusaur from hitting Pokemon like Sand Stream Hippowdon, and causing Venusaur to be worn down much faster from Life Orb recoil and entry hazards. Hidden Power Fire gives Venusaur coverage for Steel-types such as Scizor and Klefki and does more damage during sun. Sludge Bomb is useful for beating Pokemon that resist Grass and Fire like Hydreigon and Latias as well as allowing unboosted Venusaur to 2HKO Sylveon. Sludge Bomb also enables the use of Acid Downpour, which is a one-time nuke that allows unboosted Venusaur to OHKO Infernape and +2 Venusaur to OHKO Mega Latias after Stealth Rock. Growth boosts Venusaur's Special Attack by 2 stages when used during sun, giving it the power to OHKO Pokemon like Tentacruel and Amoonguss. Sleep Powder can be an option to set up Growth easier, but it causes Venusaur to be walled by either Steel-types like Cobalion if used over Hidden Power Fire or Dragon- and Fire-types like Mega Altaria and Infernape if used over Sludge Bomb.

Set Details
========

252 Special Attack EVs with a Life Orb allow Venusaur to hit as hard as possible. 252 Speed EVs, a Timid nature, and Chlorophyll are used to outspeed all common Choice Scarf users during sun. Poisonium Z allows Venusaur to use Acid Downpour, which OHKOes Hydreigon after Stealth Rock, OHKOes Mega Latias after Stealth Rock when boosted, and might OHKO Mantine when boosted. A Modest nature with Life Orb guarantees an OHKO on Mega Aerodactyl after Stealth Rock and gives a greater chance to OHKO Mega Aggron with +2 Hidden Power Fire after Spikes. However, using a Modest nature means Venusaur gets outsped by Choice Scarf Infernape, Choice Scarf Terrakion, and Choice Scarf Latias during sun.

Usage Tips
========

Venusaur can either be an early-game wallbreaker against bulkier teams or a late-game cleaner against offensive teams. If you have Poisonium Z, refrain from using Acid Downpour until the opponent sends out a Pokemon that would normally expect to take a hit, like Mega Latias, in order to OHKO it. Send out Venusaur on a resisted hit or with a free switch from using U-turn, Volt Switch, or a sacrifice while sun is up. Bulkier Water-types like Alomomola and Rotom-W usually can't do much to Venusaur, so they're good Pokemon to switch Venusaur in on. Giga Drain is incredibly spammable, especially in conjunction with Growth, as Venusaur can take a hit, set up with Growth, and recover a lot of its lost HP with +2 Giga Drain. Use Growth on predicted switches against Pokemon that Venusaur OHKOes, like Mega Sceptile and Crawdaunt. Growth can also be used against passive Pokemon like Alomomola and Sylveon, as they can't threaten Venusaur with much. If Venusaur does not need Growth to sweep through your opponent's team, just attacking is fine. When sun turns are over, you can still keep Venusaur on the field if the opponent doesn't have any Pokemon faster than it. If they do have faster Pokemon and your sun setter hasn't fainted yet, it's better to switch out so you can terrorize them again later.

Team Options
========

Sun setters such as Ninetales and Torkoal are mandatory for Venusaur to do its job of sweeping in the sun. Torkoal has much better staying power and utility, with moves like Stealth Rock and Rapid Spin, but it doesn't have much in the way of offensive presence, while Ninetales has a much better offensive presence with Nasty Plot and Inferno Overdrive but is lacking in utility and is easily KOed. Wallbreakers like Mamoswine, Nidoking, and Ninetales are great partners, as they can break through walls and weaken checks to make Venusaur's job easier. Entry hazard setters like Klefki, Swampert, and Cobalion are important for Venusaur, as it really appreciates its usual checks being worn down before it comes in. Venusaur struggles more against bulkier teams, so stallbreakers like Gliscor and Togekiss go well with it. Other cleaners like Mega Sharpedo appreciate Venusaur poking holes in the opponent's team. Fire-types like Infernape take advantage of sun and help Venusaur by breaking through Steel-types easier than Venusaur can and by wearing down Dragon-types that Venusaur struggles with.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

An alternative spread of 112 Atk / 220 SpA / 176 Spe with a Naive nature can be used in conjunction with Power Whip and Grassium Z in order to OHKO Blissey after one Growth. A more defensive set with Leech Seed and Synthesis can be used; however, it is outclassed by Amoonguss due to Amoonguss's higher bulk, access to moves like Clear Smog, and better defensive ability in Regenerator.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Specially Defensive Pokemon**: Venusaur has a difficult time dealing with Pokemon with high Special Defense like Alolan Muk and Latias, since Venusaur cannot KO them outright and they hit Venusaur back for massive damage.

**Mega Aggron**: Venusaur cannot defeat a healthy Mega Aggron, as it can take even +2 Hidden Power Fire and KO back with Fire Punch and Life Orb recoil. However, Mega Aggron cannot switch into a Hidden Power Fire without risking a 2HKO if Venusaur is Modest.

**Hippowdon**: While Hippowdon doesn't directly threaten Venusaur, its Sand Stream removes sun, preventing Venusaur from benefiting from Chlorophyll and sun-boosted Hidden Power Fire.

**Flying-types**: Venusaur has trouble breaking through common Flying-types like Mega Aerodactyl and Crobat without Stealth Rock or a Growth boost.

**Fire-types**: Fire-types like Entei and Infernape resist Venusaur's Grass-type attacks and can take an unboosted Sludge Bomb when at full HP, allowing them to KO Venusaur back with a sun-boosted STAB move.

**Priority Attacks**: Between Life Orb recoil and entry hazard damage, it's not hard for Venusaur to be worn down enough to be put in KO range of priority like Mamoswine's Ice Shard, Entei's Extreme Speed, and Scizor's Bullet Punch, especially if Venusaur lacks Giga Drain.

Overview:

*Mention some examples of Water-types and Poison-weak Grass-types in the bullet about those.

*Give examples of faster Pokemon. The Choice Scarf users point isn't really pertinent considering all relevant scarfers bar Magneton are faster than Venusaur by default.

Moves:

*In the Solar Beam section, expand on the point about Hippowdon by saying that Solar Beam becomes practically useless outside of sun as a whole compared to Giga Drain.

*Mention that HP Fire is sun boosted.

*Mention Sleep Powder as an alternative option over Sludge Bomb or HP Fire and how it can grant more opportunities to set up Growths, but it causes Venusaur to be walled by a much larger portion of the meta (with examples like Latias and Mega Altaria in Sludge Bomb's case) due to the loss of its second STAB or HP Fire.

Set Details:

*This is a small one and honestly probably isn't that important, but try to make it clear when talking about Modest that the scarfers you mentioned still outspeed Venusaur when sun is up.

Usage Tips:

*This section is actually really, really barren. I'll help as much as i can with that but generally try to flesh this out more.

*Mention that Venusaur can choose to either be an early game wallbreaker (versus bulkier teams) or a late game cleaner (versus offense).

*When saying when to use Growth, also specify that it's primarily used on predicted switches versus mons that it OHKOs without a boost (give examples).

*Try to give some tips as to what to do when sun turns are over, when to decide to switch out vs when to keep going, etc.

Team Options:

*Put Fire-types like Infernape as possible partners, as they help break through Steel-types more easily and they also take advantage of the sun that Venusaur always rolls with.

Checks & Counters:

*Give examples of specific Flying-types.

Overall pretty good, 1/3 when this is done.

Overview:
  • Incorporate Sleep Powder into the second point somehow. That point is also linked to the third one frankly speaking, since it has the coverage and typing to either force those Pokemon out or use them as setup fodder, or it could use Sleep Powder to cripple an initial switch-in, thereby assisting in it breaking the opposing team. Its bulk is decent, and it definitely plays a part in it being able to set up against various threats in the tier, especially if you're going to talk about how it's mediocre later on in the section, so might be worth rewording that. Nitpick, but change "its already great Special Attack" to "good" because my UU standards, that seems more appropriate.
  • Mention in the fourth point that outside sun teams, Venusaur is basically completely outclassed by other Grass-types like Mega Sceptile, Celebi, and Amoonguss.
  • I'd talk about how Venusaur is forced to run a Timid nature most of the time, since it can't outspeed threats like Choice Scarf Infernape and Latias with Modest.
Sun Sweeper

Set:
  • I'd slash Poisonium Z on the set, since it does have the merit of luring in stuff that would normally expect to take a hit like Mega Latias.
Moves:
  • Mention Giga Drain also recovering HP lost from Life Orb recoil, as well as being more specific in taking on bulky Water-types with examples.
  • Because of the Poisonium Z option, mention the kills that Solar Beam gets you being specific to Life Orb variants.
  • For the Hidden Power Fire point, try some other examples over Mega Steelix. It's a little iffy here, since Hidden Power Fire is only barely stronger than Giga Drain outside of sun, and it's barely stronger than Solar Beam in sun. You're better off using something like Cobalion and Klefki that doesn't take nearly as much from its STAB moves.
  • Since I mentioned making Poisonium Z a slash as an item, talk about what Acid Downpour does for Venusaur how it'd deal with the stuff Sludge Bomb usually hits even if it's not boosted by Growth.
Set Details:
  • Mention Poisonium Z allowing Venusaur to use Acid Downpour. No need to go into stuff already mentioned in moves.
  • Going like a broken record here, but again, Poisonium Z related stuff. Talk about how Modest gives it a higher chance of OHKOing Mantine, guaranteed OHKO on Mega Latias at +2, and a guaranteed OHKO on Hydreigon after Stealth Rock at neutral.
Usage Tips:
  • Talk about switching it into bulky Water-types, since those typically can't threaten Venusaur much.
  • When it comes to using Growth, talk about more passive stuff that it can set up on too, such as the above mentioned Water-types and Sylveon.
  • Mention how Giga Drain is very spammable, especially in conjunction with Growth, since it can take damage, get a +2 Special Attack boost, and heal up a lot of HP with the boosted Giga Drain.
  • Mention saving Poisonium Z for Pokemon that would typically switch in expecting to take a hit and KO back like Latias.
Other Options:
  • Mention a defensive set, but then talk about why it's outclassed by something like Amoonguss and Celebi.
Checks and Counters:
  • I feel like all of ones listed here bar Flying-types could be compounded into a single point. Not exactly sure what to call it, though. It's just silly to have 4 separate Pokemon that are generally just able to take a hit/hits and deal enough damage back to take Venusaur down. You could also do "Specially bulky Pokemon" and "Mega Aggron", since the latter doesn't fall into the first category. I'd want more QC input on this personally.
  • I'd mention Hippowdon. Say how it doesn't directly check Venusaur, but Sand Stream removes sun, so Venusaur can't take advantage of Chlorophyll once the sun setter for theh team has been KOed.
  • Mention Fire-types. While not exactly doing well in sun, they do resist Grass, and some like Entei are able to take a hit and do a ton back, especially with the boost to their STAB moves in sun.
QC 2/3. Look through the grammar and spelling standards when writing this up.

"Venusaur is a very effective sun sweeper in the UU metagame."

I'd say it's really the only viable Chlorophyll sweeper.

" In addition, Venusaur is mostly forced to run a Timid nature in order to outspeed Choice Scarf users like Infernape, which it cannot with Modest."
Mention why this sucks, if at all.

I'd mention that if it's running Solar Beam it gets super super easily worn. Just saying "it doesn't recover hp" doesn't emphasize that when it's really super important imo, as with LO + hazards it really appreciates Giga Drain.

Yeah this is p good!

Leafeon technically qualifies as a viable sun sweeper, inasmuch as sun is viable or worth running to begin with. Implement the other two points from the above post.

Use "Stealth Rock" instead of "rocks". This isn't technically a QC thing, but fixing it now means the GP team has less work to do and you'd have to fix it anyway once you sent this to GP.

In Team Options, explain the advantages and disadvantages of Ninetales and Torkoal relative to each other (Ninetales has much more offensive presence, Torkoal has more longevity and utility).

Mention priority in Checks and Counters. Between Stealth Rock and Life Orb recoil, it's not hard for Venusaur to put itself in range of moves like Mamoswine's Ice Shard, Scizor's Bullet Punch, and Entei's Extreme Speed. Venusaur doesn't just instantly fold to priority attacks, but priority is a reasonable countermeasure for offensive teams.

QC 3/3.

[OVERVIEW]

Venusaur is a very effective sun sweeper in the UU metagame. (trying to make things more concise) With fantastic Grass-, Fire-, and Poison-type coverage, the ability to cripple would-be switch-(hyphen)ins with Sleep Powder, and the ability to boost its already good Special Attack with Growth, Venusaur is not a Pokemon an effective sun sweeper that isn't to be taken lightly. In addition, Venusaur is mostly forced to run a Timid nature in order to outspeed Choice Scarf users like Infernape during sun, undermining its offensive capabilities. Although Venusaur's bulk is decent and its defensive typing is good, it's still left vulnerable to priority moves it doesn't resist like Ice Shard and Bullet Punch due to its lack of resistances to those types. Sun as a whole kind of suffers is a shaky archetype too, with only Venusaur, Leafeon, and the various Fire-types as viable sun abusers sweepers (you can make this "attackers" if that's more accurate) in UU.

**Priority Attacks**: Between Life Orb recoil and hazards entry hazard damage, it's not hard for Venusaur to be worn down enough to be put in KO range of priority like Mamoswine's Ice Shard, Entei's Extreme Speed, and Scizor's Bullet Punch, especially if Venusaur lacks Giga Drain.
