[OVERVIEW]

Torterra's great bulk and reliable recovery in Synthesis allow it to be a reliable and sustainable Stealth Rock setter. In addition to this, it has a solid STAB combination, decent coverage moves like Stone Edge, and a high Attack stat, meaning it can play offensively as well. To add to its offensive potential, Torterra also has a variety of boosting moves, notably Swords Dance and Rock Polish, allowing it to potentially become a strong and fast sweeper. However, while its STAB combination is fairly good, Torterra finds itself walled by common Pokemon like Gourgeist-XL, Weezing, and Alolan Exeggutor. Low unboosted Speed and exploitable weaknesses to types like Ice, Flying, and Fire leave Torterra prey to common Pokemon like Jynx, Oricorio-G, and Pyroar. Torterra also faces huge competition from Palossand and Gourgeist-XL as a defensive Ground- and Grass-type, respecyively. While Torterra has better mixed bulk than both of these Pokemon, Palossand also has Stealth Rock and boasts a better defensive typing that allows it to check Pokemon like Archeops, and Gourgeist-XL has better physical bulk to check wallbreakers like Stoutland more easily. Torterra also struggles due to being a Grass-type vulnerable to Water-type moves and a Ground-type that fails to deal with Fire-types. These negative factors make it difficult to justify Torterra on a team.

Moves
========

Stealth Rock allows Torterra to set up entry hazards and slowly whittle down foes. Earthquake is a reliable STAB attack that hits neutral targets like Drampa, Stoutland, and Primeape quite hard. Wood Hammer is Torterra's strongest STAB move and hits Ground-immune Pokemon like Swanna and Mesprit, though it inflicts recoil. Synthesis gives Torterra reliable recovery that helps it sustain itself throughout the match and consistently set up Stealth Rock as well as check Pokemon like Kangaskhan.

Set Details
========

The HP and Defense EVs allow Torterra to avoid the 2HKO from Kangaskhan's Double-Edge after Stealth Rock. The remaining EVs are dumped into Attack with an Adamant nature, letting Torterra to 2HKO Pokemon such as Drampa. Leftovers gives Torterra passive recovery, allowing it to sustain itself better. Rocky Helmet can be used to punish VoltTurn cores, as Torterra is immune to Volt Switch and U-Turn users like Primeape will take chip damage when they hit Torterra. It also punishes Pokemon that use contact moves in general.

Usage Tips
========

Torterra can be used as a lead to set up Stealth Rock immediately, or it can be saved for later during the game to set up Stealth Rock multiple times thanks to its ability to sustain itself. It also has a fairly good matchup versus other defensive Stealth Rock users like Regirock. However, Torterra can opt to attack opposing Pokemon first, such as using Earthquake to wear down Pokemon like Ferroseed. Use Synthesis when Torterra is in against a Pokemon it forces out like Gastrodon or more passive defensive Pokemon like Throh. It should also be used when Torterra can avoid the 2HKO from Pokemon like Aggron, Kangaskhan, and Lycanroc. This Torterra set can freely switch into Pokemon whose attacks it resists or are just weaker in general, such as Aggron and Skuntank. Once it is able to come into battle safely, Torterra's first priority should be to use Stealth Rock.

Team Options
========

Spinblockers like Oricorio-G and Defog punishers like Primeape are useful partners, as they pressure the opponent from getting rid of the Stealth Rock it sets up. Wallbreakers and sweepers such as Zangoose and Lilligant appreciate Torterra's ability to set up Stealth Rock and whittle down walls like Musharna and Weezing. These wallbreakers and sweepers can help Torterra's matchup against defensive Pokemon in return. Pokemon that can sponge Fire- and Ice-type hits like Assault Vest Magmortar have good defensive synergy with Torterra. Magmortar also appreciates Torterra's ability to set up Stealth Rock while helping break Torterra's defensive checks like Gourgeist-XL, Miltank, and Weezing in return. Checks to Flying-types like Lanturn help cover one of Torterra's major weaknesses, and Torterra can take Ground-type moves for them in return. Skuntank is a fairly good defensive partner as well, since it is able to pressure Jynx and absorb Toxic Spikes for Torterra, while Torterra is able to cover Ground-type attacks for Skuntank. Assault Vest Hitmonchan is a pretty good partner as well, since it can be a decent soft check to Fire- and Ice-type attackers as well as offering hazard removal.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Rock Polish boosts Torterra's low Speed and allows it to outspeed the unboosted metagame bar the uncommon maximum Speed Electrode and Ninjask. Swords Dance boosts Torterra's already high Attack and gives it a higher chance to OHKO and 2HKO offensive Pokemon and bulky walls like Musharna and Miltank, further increasing its sweeping potential. Earthquake is a strong and reliable STAB move that can break through walls like Palossand after a Swords Dance. Stone Edge with Earthquake allows Torterra to create the unresisted EdgeQuake combo, hitting nearly the whole tier for at least neutral damage.

Set Details
========

Maximum Attack and Speed investment allows Torterra to hit as hard as possible and outspeed Pokemon like Zebstrika and Floatzel after a Rock Polish. An Adamant nature is used over Jolly, as it gives Torterra significantly higher Attack after a Swords Dance. Torterra also doesn't hit the very common base 95 Speed Choice Scarf benchmark even with a Jolly nature, allowing Pokemon like Jynx to revenge kill it regardless. However, Jolly is still usable, as it allows Torterra to outspeed Choice Scarf Mesprit. Rockium Z gives Torterra a one-time-nuke, hitting Pokemon that would otherwise wall it, such as Weezing and Gourgeist-XL, very hard after a Swords Dance.

Usage Tips
========

Torterra requires quite a bit of team support to sweep, so careful play is required. For example, if the opponent has a bulky Grass-type like Alolan Exeggutor or Gourgeist-XL, it should be weakened by teammates before attempting a sweep with Torterra. Eliminate potential Choice Scarf users like Jynx and Pyroar that can revenge kill Torterra even after Rock Polish. Use Rock Polish or Swords Dance on Pokemon Torterra forces out or checks, such as Lycanroc, Golem, Golurk, and Aggron. Golurk and Aggron can run a Jolly nature and usually carry a super effective elemental punch in Ice Punch and Fire Punch, respectively, so scout ahead in case of this. Torterra can also set up on more passive Pokemon like Ferroseed and Miltank, though it should watch out for Toxic. Setting up both Rock Polish and Swords Dance may be difficult, so analyze the situation and see which boost would help the most. Rock Polish should be used against frailer offensive teams, as Torterra can usually hit them hard regardless of an Attack boost, but it lacks the Speed to prevent being revenge killed. Swords Dance should be used when facing bulkier and slower teams such as stall, as while Torterra can outspeed most Pokemon on these teams, it lacks the power to 2HKO them, making an Attack boost more desirable in these situations.

Team Options
========

Pokemon that can set up entry hazards like Mesprit and Miltank make it easier for Torterra to sweep, as it potentially doesn't need to use Swords Dance after enough hazard damage has racked up. Thick Fat Miltank can even deal with Torterra's Fire- and Ice-type weaknesses, while Mesprit can offer Healing Wish support to give Torterra a second chance to sweep. Pokemon that can check Flying-types, such as Probopass and Lanturn, are decent defensive partners. Clerics like Granbull and Miltank are able to prevent status conditions from hindering Torterra's sweep. Hazard removal is also important, as Torterra wants to preserve as much health as possible to boost, so Defog and Rapid Spin users like Swanna and Hitmonchan are quite important. Volt Switch and U-turn users can bring Torterra in safely without risking damage, so Primeape, Eelektross, and Lanturn are good partners. Since Gourgeist-XL is almost a complete stop to Torterra, Pokemon that can break through it like Jynx and Magmortar are great partners. Sweepers and fast offensive Pokemon appreciate the wallbreaking power Swords Dance Torterra provides, so Pokemon like Floatzel, Kabutops, and Lycanroc are good partners to finish off a weakened team. Wallbreakers like Choice Band Stoutland help Torterra sweep the opposition with only a Rock Polish boost, as they can weaken the opposing team to the point where a boost isn't required.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Choice Band turns Torterra into an extremely powerful wallbreaker that is capable of 2HKOing bulky Pokemon like Musharna with Wood Hammer. However, Torterra's STAB combination is easily walled by Pokemon like Weezing, making such a set difficult to use the majority of the time. Soft Sand is another option to boost Earthquake's power decently, though it still doesn't hit too hard without a boost and sacrifices the ability to potentially beat counters with Continental Crush. Lum Berry is another option to give Torterra safe setup opportunities against status inducers like Weezing, but it shares the same problem with Soft Sand of losing the ability to break through counters. Darkinium Z with Crunch can be used with Swords Dance to break through Gourgeist-XL, though Gourgeist-XL commonly uses Colbur Berry and it overall does not provide as much power or coverage as Rockium Z. A set utilizing Subsitute and Leech Seed can be used to act as a major annoyance to the opponents team, though Torterra's low Speed can make using this set effectively difficult. An offensive Stealth Rock set using 252 Atk / 252 Spe alongside an Adamant nature can be used, though it sacrifices Torterra's sustainability.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ice-types and Ice-type coverage**: Torterra's major Ice weakness leaves it prey to common Ice-types like Abomasnow, Pilowswine, and Jynx. It is also vulnerable to Ice-type coverage moves such as Ice Beam from Mesprit and Poliwrath as well as Ice Punch from Aggron, Hitmonchan, and Golurk.

**Weezing**: Weezing is an effective counter to Torterra due to its immunity to Earthquake, resistance to Wood Hammer, and ability to burn Torterra with Will-O-Wisp. It is, however, very heavily damaged by a +2 Continental Crush.

**Flying-types**: Flying-types resist Torterra's STAB combination and can KO it in return with a super effective STAB attack, such as Hurricane from Oricorio-G or Acrobatics from Archeops. However, Archeops can't OHKO the defensive Torterra, and most Flying-types are hit hard by Stone Edge. Not all Flying-types resist Wood Hammer either, such as Swanna and the aformentioned Archeops.

**Fire-types**: Fire-types like Pyroar and Magmortar outspeed Torterra without a Rock Polish boost and can threaten to OHKO it with a powerful STAB move. However, they cannot switch directly into Torterra due to the threat of Earthquake. Choice Scarf Pyroar can even revenge kill Torterra after a boost from Rock Polish.

**Grass-types**: Pokemon like Alolan Exeggutor and Gourgeist-XL resist Torterra's STAB combination and are not vulnerable to coverage moves Torterra carries. However, they are very heavily damaged by +2 Continental Crush. Gourgeist-XL can still potentially beat Torterra if its healthy as well, either by using Synthesis after being hit by the Z-Move or by using Will-O-Wisp to avoid the KO in the following turn.

**Physically Defensive Pokemon**: Torterra usually lacks the power to break through physically bulky Pokemon like Miltank and Musharna without a boost from Swords Dance, allowing them to check it pretty easily.

[OVERVIEW]
  • Torterra has great 95 / 105 / 85 bulk, allowing it to be a reliable Stealth Rock setter. (the other thing that separates this from pretty much every other setter is that it has access to reliable recovery. i know you mention this later but I think it's worth noting that here))
  • In addition to this, it has a solid STAB combination along with Stone Edge, which backed up by its high 109 Attack, allows Torterra play offensively as well.
  • its typing give it an immunity to volt switch
  • These factors make Torterra a solid tank in PU. (merge with first point)
  • Torterra also has a variety of support and boosting moves, with notable ones being the aformentioned Stealth Rock, Synthesis, Leech Seed, Swords Dance, and Rock Polish. (remove leech seed, it's not featured on any of the sets or even mentioned in moves)
  • However, while its STAB combination is fairly good, Torterra still finds itself walled by common Pokemon like Gourgeist-XL, Weezing, and Exeggutor-Alola.
  • Low Speed and exploitable weaknesses to types like Ice, Flying, and Fire leaves Torterra prey to common Pokemon like Jynx, Oricorio-Sensu, and Pyroar. (when unboosted)

Moves
========
  • Stealth Rock allows Torterra to set up entry hazards and slowly whittle down the opposition
  • Earthquake is gives Torterra reliable STAB that hits most neutral targets quite hard (rather vague, give examples of what it hits)
  • Wood Hammer is Torterra's strongest STAB move, though it inflicts recoil (hits pokemon immune to earthquake like mesprit and swanna)
  • Synthesis gives Torterra reliable recovery that helps it sustain itself througout the match and consistently set up Stealth Rock (allows it to act as a physical wall versus pokemon such as kangaskhan)
Set Details
========
  • Maximum Speed investment allows Torterra to set up Stealth Rock as efficiently as possible and outspeeds max Speed Adamant Golurk as well, allowing Torterra to KO it (change to reflect the new spread. allows it to avoid the 2hko from kangaskhan's double edge after stealth rock damage)
  • Maximum Attack with and Adamant nature lets Torterra hit as hard as possible and scores a 2HKO on Pokemon like Drampa (like above, change this to reflect the spread. it's really just dumped into attack and doesn't fulfil a specific role)
  • Leftovers gives Torterra passive recovery, allowing it to sustain itself better
  • Rocky Helmet can be used to punish Volt-Turn cores as Torterra is immune to Volt Switch and U-Turn users like Primeape will take chip damage when they hit Torterra. It also punishes Pokemon that use contact moves in general. (rocky helmet doesn't help it abuse the volt switch side, because that isn't what gives it its immunity)
Usage Tips
========
  • Torterra can be used as a lead to set up Stealth Rock immediately, or it can be saved for during the game to use set up Stealth Rock. (has a decent match up versus a lot of the defensive stealth rock setters) (this point makes it seem like it's a suicide lead or something, it can set multiple times in one game)
  • Either way, using Stealth Rock should usually be the first priority. (literally what you've said above)
  • However, Torterra can opt to attack opposing Pokemon first, such as using Wood Hammer immediately on opposing Golurk leads to prevent hazards. (if you do you're basically trading, maybe talk about opting to attack versus things like ferroseed and qwilfish)
  • Use Synthesis when Torterra is in against a Pokemon it forces out like Gastrodon or more passive defensive Pokemon like Throh or Miltank. (i wouldn't risk using synthesis against miltank because it quite often carries toxic)
Team Options
========
  • Spinblockers like Oricorio-G or Defog punishers like Primeape are useful partners as they pressure the opponent from getting rid of the Stealth Rock it sets up.
  • Wallbreakers or sweepers such as Passimian, Zangoose, or Lilligant appreciate Torterra's ability to set up Stealth Rock and whittle down walls like Musharna, Qwilfish, and Weezing on the switch. (due to it being a defensive set it also struggles a bit more versus musharna)
  • Pokemon that can sponge Fire and Ice-type hits like Assault Vest Magmortar have good defensive synergy with Torterra. (in return torterra offers stealth rock support that helps magmortar break teams; magmortar also breaks pretty much every common check to defensive torterra)
  • Checks to Flying-types like Silvally-Steel and Aggron (100% remove aggron from this section, it's a bad flying-type check especially when archeops carries earthquake, swanna hits it with a stab water move and oricorio-g does 62% minimum with revelation dance) (i'd rather mention lanturn which at least checks the latter two) (also how does it aid these pokemon? tortarra acts as a good check to ground-types for example)
  • torterra appreciates hazard removal from things like assault vest hitmonchan, which can act as a decent fire- and ice-type check, along with skuntank which is able to absorb toxic spikes and pressure pokemon like jynx) (in return, torterra is able to provide a ground resist for skuntank)

Moves
========
  • Rock Polish boosts Torterra's low speed, giving it the potential to sweep. (outspeeds the entire metagame (bar ninjask and electrode))
  • Swords Dance boosts Torterra's already high Attack and gives it a higher chance to OHKO and 2HKO offensive Pokemon and bulky walls, further increasing its sweeping potential. (if you're going to say it gives a higher chance to 2hko or ohko something, you need to specify what these things actually are))
  • Alternatively, Wood Hammer can be used to smack Water-types as well as opposing Torterra. (change this to reflect with the new set)
  • Earthquake is a strong and reliable STAB move, dealing heavy damage to most targets after a Swords Dance (any examples of things it breaks?)
  • Stone Edge allows Torterra to use Continental Crush as well as creating the nearly unresisted EdgeQuake combo alongside Earthquake. (hits pokemon like oricorio-g, archeops, swanna, etc. don't mention the z move here as you mention and explain it in more detail later on)
Set Details
========
  • Maximum Attack and Speed investment gives allows Torterra to hit as hard as possible and to outspeed as much as possible after a Rock Polish (what does it outspeed?)
  • Adamant is used over Jolly, as it gives Torterra significantly higher Attack after a Swords Dance, and Torterra doesn't hit the very common base 95 Speed Choice Scarf benchmark regardless of a Jolly nature. (name the choice scarf users)
  • Rockium Z give Torterra very good neutral coverage, hitting Pokemon that would initially wall it very hard after a Swords Dance. These Pokemon include Weezing and Gourgeist-XL. (it doesn't actually give it the neutral coverage, it gives it a one time nuke essentially)
Usage Tips
========
  • Torterra requires quite a bit of team support to sweep, so careful play is required.
  • Eliminate potential Choice Scarf users like Primeape, Jynx, and Pyroar that can revenge kill Torterra even after Rock Polish. (i can guarantee you with 100% certainty that primeape is not really a reliable revenge killer, as it only does around 54% average with close combat)
  • Piloswine in particular is also something that needs to be dealt with before attempting to sweep, as its priority Ice Shard can heavily damage Torterra.
  • Use Rock Polish or Swords Dance on Pokemon Torterra forces out or checks, such as Lycanroc, Golem, Golurk, and Aggron. (can set up on more passive pokemon such as ferroseed too, requiring it doesn't have toxic) (should be wary that golurk can be jolly and almost always carries ice punch)
  • Setting up both Rock Polish and Swords Dance may be difficult, so analyze the situation and see which boost would most effectively help.
Team Options
========
  • Pokemon that can set up entry hazards makes it easier for Torterra to sweep, as it potentially doesn't need to use Swords Dance after enough hazard damage has racked up.
  • Such Pokemon include Qwilfish, Miltank, and Crustle. (remove crustle)
  • Thick Fat Miltank can even deal with Torterra's Fire and Ice-type weaknesses.
  • Pokemon that can check Flying-types, such as Probopass and Aggron are decent defensive partners.
very bare-bones and requires expansion. it hates status as it impacts its ability to sweep, it really dislikes having toxic spikes on the field so mention hazard removers, aggron isn't a good defensive partner, mention volt switch + u-turn cores, healing wish support and stealth rock support from mesprit, etc. overall just expand on this please. also how does torterra help these pokemon?

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • Choice Band turns Torterra into an extremely powerful wallbreaker, being able to 2HKO bulky Pokemon like Musharna with Choice Band Wood Hammer. However, Torterra's STAB combination is easily walled, making such a set difficult to use the majority of the time. (by things like weezing for example)
  • Darkinium Z with Crunch can be used on the Swords Dance set to break through Gourgeist, though it overall does not provide as much power or coverage as Rockium Z. (gourgeist-xl almost always carries colbur berry, meaning 1v1 torterra still loses)
  • A set utilizing Subsitute and Leech Seed can be used to act as a major annoyance to the opponents team, though Torterra's low speed can make this difficult to work.
  • A physically defensive set using 252 HP / 252 Def, an Impish nature, and Leftovers or Rocky Helmet allows Torterra extremely to check physical attackers such as Kangaskhan and Primeape. (remove this and change it to offensive stealth rocks to reflect the change in the first set)
  • Gourgeist-XL still performs such a roll better for the most part due to its higher physical bulk and more effectively checking Passimian and Zangoose by virtue of its typing. (not true, torterra getting stealth rock and being less passive gives it a niche)
Checks and Counters
===================

**Weezing**: Weezing deserves a particular mention due to its immunity to Earthquake and resistance to Wood Hammer while being able to burn Torterra with Will-O-Wisp, making it an effective counter to Torterra. It is, however, very heavily damaged by a +2 Continental Crush.

**Fire-types**: Fire-types like Pyroar and Magmortar outspeed Torterra without a Rock Polish boost and can threaten to OHKO it with a powerful STAB move. However, they cannot switch directly into Torterra due to the threat of Earthquake. (mention that scarf pyroar still outspeeds even with a rock polish boost)

**Ice-types**: Torterra's major Ice weakness leaves it prey to common Ice-types like Abomasnow, Pilowswine, and Jynx. It is also vulnerable to Ice-type coverage moves such as Ice Beam from Mesprit and Poliwrath as well as Ice Punch from Aggron, Hitmonchan, Primeape, and Golurk. (remove primeape, it rarely runs ice punch) (also if you're going to mention pokemon that aren't ice-types, then you need to specify ice moves or something)

**Flying-types**: Flying-types resist Torterra's STAB combination and can KO Torterra back with a super-effective STAB, such as Hurricane from Oricorio-Sensu and Acrobatics from Archeops. However, Archeops doesn't appreciate a Wood Hammer, and most Flying-types are hit hard by Stone Edge. (archeops doesn't ohko the defensive set, which is worth mentioning)

**Grass-types**: Pokemon like Exeggutor-Alola and Gourgeist resist Torterra's STAB combination and are not vulnerable to coverage moves Torterra carries. However, they are very heavily damaged by Continental Crush with a Swords Dance boost. (even though gourgeist-xl takes a +2 continental crush quite badly, it's worth mentioning that from full it beats torterra if it wisps it that turn, or even presses synth on the z move)

**Defensive Pokemon**: Torterra usually lacks the power to break through physically bulky Pokemon like Miltank and Musharna without a boost from Choice Band or Swords Dance.

  • Thick Fat Miltank can even deal with Torterra's Fire and Ice-type weaknesses, while Mesprit can offer Healing Wish support to give Torterra a second chance to sweep.
  • Pokemon that can check Flying-types, such as Probopass and Lanturn are decent defensive partners.
  • Clerics like Granbull and Miltank are able to prevent status from hindering Torterra's sweep.

u need to talk about offensive partners, wallbreaking support for RP and sweepers that appreciate SD breaking are both relevant. u also want things to break those bulky grasses and other kinds of mons that give tort so there's 2-4 more examples and then this'll feel a lot more full

  • Choice Band turns Torterra into an extremely powerful wallbreaker, being able to 2HKO bulky Pokemon like Musharna with Choice Band Wood Hammer. However, Torterra's STAB combination is easily walled by Pokemon like Weezing, making such a set difficult to use the majority of the time.
  • Darkinium Z with Crunch can be used on the Swords Dance set to break through Gourgeist, though Gourgeist commonly uses Colbur Berry and it overall does not provide as much power or coverage as Rockium Z.
  • A set utilizing Subsitute and Leech Seed can be used to act as a major annoyance to the opponents team, though Torterra's low speed can make this difficult to work.
  • An offensive Stealth Rock set using 252 Atk / 252 Spe alongside an Adamant nature can be used, though it sacrifices Torterra's sustainability.
Checks and Counters
===================

Choice Scarf Pyroar can even revenge kill Torterra even after Rock Polish.

**Ice-type Moves**: Torterra's major Ice weakness leaves it prey to common Ice-types like Abomasnow, Pilowswine RIP Piloswine, and Jynx. It is also vulnerable to Ice-type coverage moves such as Ice Beam from Mesprit and Poliwrath as well as Ice Punch from Aggron, Hitmonchan, and Golurk.

**Flying-types**: Flying-types resist Torterra's STAB combination and can KO Torterra back with a super-effective STAB, such as Hurricane from Oricorio-Sensu and Acrobatics from Archeops. However, Archeops can't OHKO the defensive set and it doesn't appreciate a Wood Hammer either, and most Flying-types are hit hard by Stone Edge.

**Grass-types**: Pokemon like Exeggutor-Alola and Gourgeist-XL resist Torterra's STAB combination and are not vulnerable to coverage moves Torterra carries. However, they are very heavily damaged by Continental Crush with a Swords Dance boost. Gourgeist-XL can still potentially beat Torterra if its healthy as well, either by using Synthesis after being hit by the Z-move or by using Will-O-Wisp to avoid the KO in the following turn. i would move this above fire types and below weezing, while they dont outwardly threaten you like fire/ice mons tort really just fails to break then which really hurts it as a boosting sweeper because at team preview u see a gourgeist and it's kinda useless

**physically Defensive Pokemon**: Torterra usually lacks the power to break through physically bulky Pokemon like Miltank and Musharna without a boost from Choice Band or Swords Dance.

[OVERVIEW]

Torterra's great bulk along with reliable recovery in Synthesis allows it to be a reliable and sustainable Stealth Rock setter. In addition to this, it has a solid STAB combination, great coverage (its coverage isn't all that great.) moves like Stone Edge, and a high Attack stat; all of which allow Torterra to play offensively as well. Torterra also has a variety of support and boosting moves, with notable ones being the aformentioned Synthesis, as well as Stealth Rock, (you've already mentioned these two moves so you don't need to mention them again. make this point more about how it can also function as a wallbreaker / sweeper.) Swords Dance, and Rock Polish. However, while its STAB combination is fairly good, Torterra still finds itself walled by common Pokemon like Gourgeist-XL, Weezing, and Exeggutor-Alola. Low unboosted Speed and exploitable weaknesses to types like Ice, Flying, and Fire leaves Torterra prey to common Pokemon like Jynx, Oricorio-Sensu (Oricorio-G), and Pyroar. Torterra also faces huge competition from Pallosand (Palossand) and Gourgeist-XL. While Torterra has better mixed bulk than both these Pokemon; Pallosand boasts a better defensive typing that allows it to check Pokemon like Archeops as well as still being able to set up Stealth Rock, and Gourgeist-XL has better physical bulk which allows it to check wallbreakers like Stoutland much easier. These negative factors make it difficult to justify Torterra on a team. (another of its downsides is that it's a grass-type that struggles with water-types and a ground-type that struggles with fires and flyings.)

Moves
========

Stealth Rock allows Torterra to set up entry hazards and slowly whittle down the opposition. Earthquake is gives Torterra reliable STAB that hits neutral targets like Drampa, Stoutland, and Primeape quite hard. Wood Hammer is Torterra's strongest STAB move and hits Ground immune Pokemon like Swanna and Mesprit, though it inflicts recoil. Synthesis gives Torterra reliable recovery that helps it sustain itself througout the match and consistently set up Stealth Rock as well as check Pokemon like Kangaskhan.

Set Details
========

The HP and Defense EVs allow Torterra to avoid the 2HKO from Kangaskhan's Double Edge after Stealth Rock. The remaining EVs are dumped into attack and with an Adamant nature, Torterra hits pretty hard and scores a 2HKO on Pokemon like Drampa. Leftovers gives Torterra passive recovery, allowing it to sustain itself better. Rocky Helmet can be used to punish Volt-Turn cores as Torterra is immune to Volt Switch and U-Turn users like Primeape will take chip damage when they hit Torterra. It also punishes Pokemon that use contact moves in general.

Usage Tips
========

Torterra can be used as a lead to set up Stealth Rock immediately, or it can be saved for during the game to set up Stealth Rock multiple times thanks to its ability to sustain itself. It also has a fairly good match up versus other defensive Stealth Rock users like Regirock. However, Torterra can opt to attack opposing Pokemon first, such as using Earthquake to wear down Pokemon like Qwilfish (rip qwilfish) and Ferroseed. Use Synthesis when Torterra is in against a Pokemon it forces out like Gastrodon or more passive defensive Pokemon like Throh. It should also be used when Torterra can avoid the 2HKO from Pokemon like Aggron, Kangaskhan, and Lycanroc. As this Torterra is more defensive, it can freely switch into Pokemon whose attacks it resists or just weaker ones in general, such as Aggron and Skuntank. Once it is able to come into battle safely, Torterra's first priority should be to use Stealth Rock.

Team Options
========

Spinblockers like Oricorio-G or Defog punishers like Primeape are useful partners as they pressure the opponent from getting rid of the Stealth Rock it sets up. Wallbreakers or sweepers such as Passimian, Zangoose, or Lilligant appreciate Torterra's ability to set up Stealth Rock and whittle down walls like Musharna, Qwilfish (rip qwilfish), and Weezing on the switch. These wallbreakers and sweepers can help Torterra's matchup against defensive Pokemon in return. Pokemon that can sponge Fire and Ice-type hits like Assault Vest Magmortar have good defensive synergy with Torterra. Offensive Magmortar (av mag is still offensive.) also appreciates Torterra's ability to set up Stealth Rock while helping break Torterra's defensive checks like Gourgeist, Miltank, and Weezing in return. Checks to Flying-types like Silvally-Steel (rip steelvally) and Lanturn help cover one of Torterra's major weaknesses while Torterra can take Ground-type moves for them in return. Skuntank is a fairly good defensive partner as well, since it is able to pressure Jynx and absorb Toxic Spikes for Torterra while Torterra is able to cover Ground-type attacks for Skuntank. Assault Vest Hitmonchan is a pretty good partner as well, since it can be a decent soft check to Fire and Ice-type attackers as well as offering hazard removal.

Moves
========

Rock Polish boosts Torterra's low speed and allows it to outspeed the unboosted metagame bar the uncommon Electrode and Ninjask. (+2 torterra outspeeds adamant ninjask by 3 points.) Swords Dance boosts Torterra's already high Attack and gives it a higher chance to OHKO and 2HKO offensive Pokemon and bulky walls like Musharna and Miltank, further increasing its sweeping potential. Earthquake is a strong and reliable STAB move, being able to break through walls like Pallosand after a Swords Dance. Stone Edge allows Torterra to creates the nearly unresisted EdgeQuake combo alongside Earthquake and allows Torterra to KO Flying-types like Oricorio-G, Swanna, and Archeops. (reword this to say that stone edge provides good coverage with earthquake, hitting the entire tier for neutral for damage.)

Set Details
========

Maximum Attack and Speed investment gives allows Torterra to hit as hard as possible and to outspeed Pokemon like Zebstrika and Floatzel after a Rock Polish. Adamant is used over Jolly, as it gives Torterra significantly higher Attack after a Swords Dance. Torterra also doesn't hit the very common base 95 Speed Choice Scarf benchmark, allowing Pokemon like Jynx to KO it regardless of a Jolly nature. However, Jolly is still usable, as it allows Torterra to outspeed Choice Scarf Mesprit. Rockium Z give Torterra a one time nuke, hitting Pokemon that would initially wall it very hard after a Swords Dance. These Pokemon include Weezing and Gourgeist-XL. (not gp, but make this into one sentence.)

Usage Tips
========

Torterra requires quite a bit of team support to sweep, so careful play is required. For example, if the opposition has a bulky Grass-type like Exeggutor-Alola or Gourgeist-XL, they should be weakened by teammates before attempting a sweep with Torterra. Golurk and Aggron can be Jolly and usually carry Ice Punch, (aggron usually uses fire punch over ice punch.) so scout ahead in case of this. It can also set up on more passive Pokemon like Ferroseed or Miltank, though it should watch out for Toxic. Setting up both Rock Polish and Swords Dance may be difficult, so analyze the situation and see which boost would most effectively help. Rock Polish should be used against frailer offensive teams, as Torterra can usually hit them hard regardless of an Attack boost, but it lacks the speed to prevent being revenge killed. Swords Dance should be used when facing bulkier and slower teams such as stall, as while Torterra has the speed to outspeed most Pokemon on these teams, it lacks the power to 2HKO them, making an Attack boost more desirable in these situations.

Team Options
========

Pokemon that can set up entry hazards like Mesprit and Miltank makes it easier for Torterra to sweep, as it potentially doesn't need to use Swords Dance after enough hazard damage has racked up. Thick Fat Miltank can even deal with Torterra's Fire and Ice-type weaknesses, while Mesprit can offer Healing Wish support to give Torterra a second chance to sweep. Pokemon that can check Flying-types, such as Probopass and Lanturn are decent defensive partners. Clerics like Granbull and Miltank are able to prevent status from hindering Torterra's sweep. Hazard removal is also important, as Torterra wants to preserve as much health as possible to boost, so Defog and Rapid Spin users like Swanna and Hitmonchan are quite important to help Torterra preserve health. Volt Switch and U-turn users can bring Torterra in safely without risking damage, so Primeape, Passimian, Eelektross, and Lanturn are good partners. Since Gourgeist-XL is almost a complete stop to Torterra's sweep, Pokemon that can break through it like Jynx or Magmortar are great partners. Sweepers or fast offensive Pokemon appreciate the wallbreaking power Swords Dance Torterra provides; so Pokemon like the aformentioned Jynx, Floatzel, Kabutops, Raichu-Alola, Lilligant, or Lycanroc (no need for this many examples, just 1-2, three at most, is fine.) are good partners to finish off a weakened team. Wallbreakers like Choice Band Passimian or Stoutland help Torterra sweep the opposition with only a Rock Polish boost, as they can weaken the opposing team to the point where a boost isn't required.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options

Choice Band turns Torterra into an extremely powerful wallbreaker, being able to 2HKO bulky Pokemon like Musharna with Choice Band (this part is redundant since you mention that it's cb at the beginning of the sentence.) Wood Hammer. However, Torterra's STAB combination is easily walled by Pokemon like Weezing, making such a set difficult to use the majority of the time. Darkinium Z with Crunch can be used on the Swords Dance set to break through Gourgeist, though Gourgeist commonly uses Colbur Berry and it overall does not provide as much power or coverage as Rockium Z. A set utilizing Subsitute and Leech Seed can be used to act as a major annoyance to the opponents team, though Torterra's low speed can make this difficult to work. An offensive Stealth Rock set using 252 Atk / 252 Spe alongside an Adamant nature can be used, though it sacrifices Torterra's sustainability. (soft sand and lum berry should both have a mention here.)

Checks and Counters
===================
(change the order of this to ice-types, weezing, flying-types, fire-types, bulky grass-types, phys def pokemon.)

However, they cannot switch directly into Torterra due to the threat of Earthquake. Choice Scarf Pyroar can even revenge kill Torterra even after Rock Polish.

**Ice-type Moves**: Torterra's major Ice weakness leaves it prey to common Ice-types like Abomasnow, Pilowswine, and Jynx. It is also vulnerable to Ice-type coverage moves such as Ice Beam from Mesprit and Poliwrath as well as Ice Punch from Aggron, Hitmonchan, and Golurk. (name this point ice-types and ice-type coverage.)

(not all flying-types resist wood hammer, see swanna and archeops.)

**Physically Defensive Pokemon**: Torterra usually lacks the power to break through physically bulky Pokemon like Miltank and Musharna without a boost from Choice Band or Swords Dance. (remove the part about choice band since it doesn't have a set.) (specially defensive miltank is more common.)

The HP and Defense EVs allow Torterra to avoid the 2HKO from Kangaskhan's Double-Edge (AH) after Stealth Rock. The remaining EVs are dumped into Attack and with an Adamant nature, letting Torterra hits hit pretty hard and scores score a 2HKO on Pokemon like Drampa. Leftovers gives Torterra passive recovery, allowing it to sustain itself better. Rocky Helmet can be used to punish Volt-Turn VoltTurn cores, (AC) as Torterra is immune to Volt Switch and U-Turn users like Primeape will take chip damage when they hit Torterra. It also punishes Pokemon that use contact moves in general.

Usage Tips
========

Torterra can be used as a lead to set up Stealth Rock immediately, or it can be saved for later during the game to set up Stealth Rock multiple times thanks to its ability to sustain itself. It also has a fairly good match up matchup versus other defensive Stealth Rock users like Regirock. However, Torterra can opt to attack opposing Pokemon first, such as using Earthquake to wear down Pokemon like and (guess Qwilfish was here?) Ferroseed. Use Synthesis when Torterra is in against a Pokemon it forces out like Gastrodon or more passive defensive Pokemon like Throh. It should also be used when Torterra can avoid the 2HKO from Pokemon like Aggron, Kangaskhan, and Lycanroc. As this Torterra is more defensive, it can freely switch into Pokemon whose attacks it resists or are just weaker ones in general, such as Aggron and Skuntank. Once it is able to come into battle safely, Torterra's first priority should be to use Stealth Rock.

Team Options
========

Spinblockers like Oricorio-G or Defog punishers like Primeape are useful partners, (AC) as they pressure the opponent from getting rid of the Stealth Rock it sets up. Wallbreakers or sweepers such as Passimian, Zangoose, or and Lilligant appreciate Torterra's ability to set up Stealth Rock and whittle down walls like Musharna and Weezing on the switch. These wallbreakers and sweepers can help Torterra's matchup against defensive Pokemon in return. Pokemon that can sponge Fire- (AH) and Ice-type hits like Assault Vest Magmortar have good defensive synergy with Torterra. Magmortar also appreciates Torterra's ability to set up Stealth Rock while helping break Torterra's defensive checks like Gourgeist, (-XL?) Miltank, and Weezing in return. Checks to Flying-types like Lanturn help cover one of Torterra's major weaknesses, (AC) while and Torterra can take Ground-type moves for them in return. Skuntank is a fairly good defensive partner as well, since it is able to pressure Jynx and absorb Toxic Spikes for Torterra, (AC) while Torterra is able to cover Ground-type attacks for Skuntank. Assault Vest Hitmonchan is a pretty good partner as well, since it can be a decent soft check to Fire- (AH) and Ice-type attackers as well as offering hazard removal.

Earthquake is a strong and reliable STAB move, being able to break through walls like Pallosand Palossand after a Swords Dance. Stone Edge with Earthquake allows Torterra to create the unresisted EdgeQuake combo, hitting nearly the whole tier for at least neutral damage.

Set Details
========

Maximum Attack and Speed investment gives allows Torterra to hit as hard as possible and to outspeed Pokemon like Zebstrika and Floatzel after a Rock Polish. An Adamant nature is used over Jolly, as it gives Torterra significantly higher Attack after a Swords Dance. Torterra also doesn't hit the very common base 95 Speed Choice Scarf benchmark even with a Jolly nature, allowing Pokemon like Jynx to KO it regardless of a Jolly nature. However, Jolly is still usable, as it allows Torterra to outspeed Choice Scarf Mesprit. Rockium Z gives Torterra a one-time (AH) nuke, hitting Pokemon that would initially otherwise wall it, like such as Weezing and Gourgeist-XL, very hard after a Swords Dance.

Usage Tips
========

Torterra requires quite a bit of team support to sweep, so careful play is required. For example, if the opposition has a bulky Grass-type like Alolan Exeggutor-Alola or Gourgeist-XL, they it should be weakened by teammates before attempting a sweep with Torterra. Golurk and Aggron can be run a Jolly nature and usually carry a super effective (RH) elemental punch (RC) in Fire Punch and Ice Punch, respectively, (comma) so scout ahead in case of this. It Torterra can also set up on more passive Pokemon like Ferroseed or and Miltank, though it should watch out for Toxic.

========

Pokemon that can set up entry hazards like Mesprit and Miltank makes make it easier for Torterra to sweep, as it potentially doesn't need to use Swords Dance after enough hazard damage has racked up. Thick Fat Miltank can even deal with Torterra's Fire- (AH) and Ice-type weaknesses, while Mesprit can offer Healing Wish support to give Torterra a second chance to sweep. Pokemon that can check Flying-types, such as Probopass and Lanturn, (AC) are decent defensive partners. Since Gourgeist-XL is almost a complete stop to Torterra's sweep, Pokemon that can break through it like Jynx or and Magmortar are great partners. Sweepers or fast offensive Pokemon appreciate the wallbreaking power Swords Dance Torterra provides, (comma) so Pokemon like Floatzel, Kabutops, or and Lycanroc are good partners to finish off a weakened team. Wallbreakers like Choice Band Passimian or and Stoutland help Torterra sweep the opposition with only a Rock Polish boost, as they can weaken the opposing team to the point where a boost isn't required.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Choice Band turns Torterra into an extremely powerful wallbreaker, being able to 2HKO bulky Pokemon like Musharna with Wood Hammer. However, Torterra's STAB combination is easily walled by Pokemon like Weezing, making such a set difficult to use the majority of the time. Soft Sand is another option to boost Earthquake's power decently, though it still doesn't hit too hard without a boost and sacrifices the ability to potentially beat counters withe Continental Crush. Lum Berry is another option to give Torterra safe setup against status users like Weezing, but it shares the same problem with Soft Sand, losing the ability to break through counters. Darkinium Z with Crunch can be used on the Swords Dance set to break through Gourgeist, (-XL here too prob) though Gourgeist commonly uses Colbur Berry and it overall does not provide as much power or coverage as Rockium Z.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Weezing**: Weezing deserves a particular mention due to its immunity to Earthquake, (AC) and resistance to Wood Hammer, (AC) while being able and ability to burn Torterra with Will-O-Wisp, making it an effective counter to Torterra. It is, however, very heavily damaged by a +2 Continental Crush.

**Flying-types**: Flying-types resist Torterra's STAB combination and can KO Torterra back with a super effective (RH) STAB attack, such as Hurricane from Oricorio-Sensu Oricorio-G and Acrobatics from Archeops. However, Archeops can't OHKO the defensive set and it doesn't appreciate a Wood Hammer either, and most Flying-types are hit hard by Stone Edge. Not all Flying-types resist Wood Hammer either, like the aformentioned Archeops as well as Swanna.

**Fire-types**: Fire-types like Pyroar and Magmortar outspeed Torterra without a Rock Polish boost and can threaten to OHKO it with a powerful STAB move. However, they cannot switch directly into Torterra due to the threat of Earthquake. Choice Scarf Pyroar can even revenge kill Torterra even after Rock Polish.

**Grass-types**: Pokemon like Alolan Exeggutor-Alola and Gourgeist-XL resist Torterra's STAB combination and are not vulnerable to coverage moves Torterra carries.

**Physically Defensive Pokemon**: Torterra usually lacks the power to break through physically bulky Pokemon like Miltank and Musharna without a boost from Swords Dance, allowing them to check it pretty easily for the most part.

Torterra's great bulk along with and reliable recovery in Synthesis allows allow it to be a reliable and sustainable Stealth Rock setter. Torterra also faces huge competition from Palossand and Gourgeist-XL as a defensive Ground- (AH) and Grass-type, respectively . respectively.

Wallbreakers like Choice Band Passimian and Stoutland help Torterra sweep the opposition with only a Rock Polish boost, as they can weaken the opposing team to the point where a boost isn't required.

Other Options
=============

Choice Band turns Torterra into an extremely powerful wallbreaker, (RC) being able to 2HKO that is capable of 2HKOing bulky Pokemon like Musharna with Wood Hammer. Lum Berry is another option to give Torterra safe setup opportunities against status users inducers like Weezing, but it shares the same problem with Soft Sand, (RC) of losing the ability to break through counters. Darkinium Z with Crunch can be used on the with Swords Dance set to break through Gourgeist-XL, though Gourgeist-XL commonly uses Colbur Berry and it overall does not provide as much power or coverage as Rockium Z. A set utilizing Subsitute and Leech Seed can be used to act as a major annoyance to the opponents team, though Torterra's low speed Speed can make this difficult to work using this set effectively difficult. An offensive Stealth Rock set using 252 Atk / 252 Spe alongside an Adamant nature can be used, though it sacrifices (please de-bold this c) Torterra's sustainability.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Weezing**: Weezing deserves a particular mention is an effective counter to Torterra due to its immunity to Earthquake, resistance to Wood Hammer, and ability to burn Torterra with Will-O-Wisp, making it an effective counter to Torterra. It is, however, very heavily damaged by a +2 Continental Crush.

**Flying-types**: Flying-types resist Torterra's STAB combination and can KO Torterra back it in return with a super effective STAB attack, such as Hurricane from Oricorio-Gandor Acrobatics from Archeops. However, Archeops can't OHKO the defensive set and it doesn't appreciate a Wood Hammer either Torterra (redundant with the next sentence), and most Flying-types are hit hard by Stone Edge. Not all Flying-types resist Wood Hammer either, like the aformentioned such as Swanna and the aforementioned Archeops as well as Swanna.

**Fire-types**: Fire-types like Pyroar and Magmortar outspeed Torterra without a Rock Polish boost and can threaten to OHKO it with a powerful STAB move. However, they cannot switch directly into Torterra due to the threat of Earthquake. Choice Scarf Pyroar can even revenge kill Torterra even after a boost from Rock Polish.

**Grass-types**: Pokemon like Alolan Exeggutor and Gourgeist-XL resist Torterra's STAB combination and are not vulnerable to coverage moves Torterra carries. However, they are very heavily damaged by +2 Continental Crush with a Swords Dance boost. Gourgeist-XL can still potentially beat Torterra if its healthy as well, either by using Synthesis after being hit by the Z-Move or by using Will-O-Wisp to avoid the KO in the following turn.

**Physically Defensive Pokemon**: Torterra usually lacks the power to break through physically bulky Pokemon like Miltank and Musharna without a boost from Swords Dance, allowing them to check it pretty easily for the most part (redundant).
