[OVERVIEW]

Steelix is one of the most consistent Stealth Rock setters in the tier due to its combination of titanic bulk, a spectacular defensive typing, and a solid offensive presence, which allow it to check threats like Sneasel, Braviary, and Golbat while retaining power. However, Steelix is easily worn down due to a lack of reliable recovery. Furthermore, Steelix is commonly used because of the amount of role compression that it provides, so it has to switch into many different threats, adding to the speed that it gets worn down at. It is rather exploitable because it is weak to common types, including Fighting, Water, and Fire. Finally, Steelix struggles to get Stealth Rock up against teams with Xatu, which decreases its reliability a lot.

Moves
========

Steelix's great bulk makes it a very reliable Stealth Rock setter. Gyro Ball is a decent STAB move due to Steelix's low Speed, and it prevents Virizion from using Steelix as setup bait. Heavy Slam is an alternative option that hits Pokemon like Mega Audino, Granbull, and Aromatisse much harder. Earthquake is a more reliable STAB move that hits opposing Steelix, Togedemaru, and Rhydon, as well as hitting Emboar and Houndoom on the switch. Toxic prevents Steelix from being dead weight against Slowbro, Rotom-C, Vikavolt, and Slowking. Meanwhile, Protect gives Steelix one free turn of Leftovers recovery, slowing the pace at which it is worn down at and letting it retain its Sturdy when Stealth Rock is up. Additionally, it lets Steelix scout which move Choice item users like Rotom-C and Sceptile will lock themselves into. Roar is another option that further discourages Pokemon like Virizion and Scrafty from setting up on Steelix. Finally, Curse can be run to improve Steelix's matchup against Bulk Up Braviary, Xatu, and variants of Golbat and allows it to further increase its offensive presence while making it harder to KO.

Set Details
========

Sturdy allows Steelix to get up Stealth Rock almost every game or stop the sweep of Pokemon like Houndoom. Steelix has no reliable recovery, so Leftovers is used in order to prevent it from getting worn down as easily. The given HP and Special Defense EVs are used to avoid the 2HKO from Tauros's Fire Blast, and the remaining EVs go in Attack with a Brave nature to increase Steelix's damage output. A Brave nature and 0 Speed IVs are used to power up Gyro Ball, but if Heavy Slam is being used, an Adamant nature and maximum Speed IVs are better.

Usage Tips
========

Switch Steelix into Pokemon that it checks, such as Sneasel and Druddigon, in order to set up Stealth Rock, usually as soon as possible. However, if the opponent has, for example, an Emboar or Houndoom, sometimes it is preferred to preserve Steelix's Sturdy so it can check them. Steelix also has no reliable recovery, so be careful about what you switch it into, as it may make it difficult to check Pokemon like Sneasel later in the match. Bulky Water-types such as Slowbro will commonly switch into Steelix, so try to use Toxic on the switch to cripple them.

Team Options
========

Steelix is a very reliable Stealth Rock user with a good defensive typing, so it works well with many Pokemon. Pokemon to take on bulky Water-types such as Sceptile, Rotom-C, and Virizion are necessary because the best thing Steelix can do to those Water-types is use Toxic. Similarly, Grass- and Fighting-types are difficult for Steelix to take on, so Drapion, Garbodor, Toxicroak, and Slowbro make good teammates. Drapion and Toxicroak also help with the bulky Water-types. Steelix has very good natural physical bulk, but its special bulk is lacking, so blanket checks to special attackers like Slowking make decent partners. Finally, on more defensively oriented teams, Wish users like Vaporeon and Aromatisse can provide Steelix with the recovery that it typically lacks.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Chople Berry can be used to help Steelix take on Virizion and Hitmonlee, with Heavy Slam then allowing Steelix to beat Virizion one-on-one. A specially offensive set with Dark Pulse and Earth Power can be used to lure Pokemon like Slowbro, opposing Steelix, and Vileplume. A spread with no Special Defense EVs and simply maximum Attack can be used; it makes Steelix much less passive and the extra Special Defense is not typically needed anyway. A mix between the current spread and this spread could also be used; Steelix's EV spread is very customizable. A set with 164 Speed EVs and Taunt could be used to prevent opposing Steelix and Rhydon from getting up Stealth Rock as well as to prevent Pokemon like Vileplume from using recovery moves. Chesto Berry, when combined with Rest, is similar, as it prevents Steelix from getting worn down as easily but is generally not worth the moveslot.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Water-types**: Slowbro, Slowking, Jellicent, Seismitoad, and Vaporeon are only threatened by Toxic and can set up Calm Mind or Stealth Rock or threaten Steelix with Scald.

**Xatu**: Xatu prevents Steelix from accomplishing its main task—setting up Stealth Rock—unless Steelix is using Curse or if Xatu is offensive and Steelix is using Heavy Slam.

**Grass-types**: Rotom-C, Vileplume, and Virizion don't take much from Earthquake and can heavily damage Steelix with their STAB moves. Sceptile can heavily damage Steelix with Leaf Storm or Focus Blast, but it cannot switch into Gyro Ball.

**Fighting-types**: Hitmonlee, Emboar, and Hariyama can OHKO Steelix with their very powerful STAB moves if Sturdy is broken. However, Hitmonlee is OHKOed by Gyro Ball and Emboar by Earthquake.

**Strong Special Attackers**: Steelix has amazing physical bulk, but its Special Defense is subpar, so strong special attackers like Vikavolt, Mismagius, Vanilluxe, Delphox, and Sigilyph can all take it on, especially if Sturdy is broken and Steelix is weakened. However, none of them, bar Vikavolt, can switch in.

Gyro Ball should be the first slash as long as Virizion is a big threat imo

also i wouldnt call it "the only good steel type in the tier" I'd say its the only good defensive steel type in the tier

Gyro Ball also does a ton of damage to Sceptile, OHKOing it after Stealth Rock for example. Protect deserves a moves mention for scouting Choice users, notably Rotom-C and Sceptile plus it's nice for racking up extra Leftovers recovery (also fucks up Hitmonlee if you predict right). Mention a max Attack spread in set details; makes Steelix much less passive and the special bulk isn't always needed anyways, especially when there's less special attackers Steelix checks compared to last gen.

you kind of touch on it but id expand on how Steelix EVs can be easily customized for a team

honestly I think Protect should be a main slash and Roar should be in moves. Protect lets you come in on SR, protect and get Sturdy back. This can let Steelix serve as an emergency check to a lot of different Pokemon (including a bunch of its counters). Also its nice for scouting choice mons which like to come in on Steelix.

other than that this is good though 2/3

Banned deucer.
I would like to add that, with Gyro Ball as option on moveset and Brave nature over Adamant, IVs should be adjusted depending on nature, as it will matter on some important OHKOes, since Brave nature and 0 speed IVs maximizes move power.

Before showing calculations, Id like to justify why its the best option. Brave nature with maximum speed IVs not only misses on some KOes, but is basically not worthy running as nothing in that speed tier really runs -speed nature, and only pokemon that do are Trick Room pokemon like Slowking and Wishiwashi, which Steelix would rather like speed tying with 0 speed Ivs in crucial situations since its already running Brave nature.

Now ill compare some calcs with 0 IVs versing 31 IVs

136+ Atk Steelix Gyro Ball (146 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mismagius: 265-313 (101.5 - 119.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
136+ Atk Steelix Gyro Ball (98 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mismagius: 178-211 (68.1 - 80.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

136+ Atk Steelix Gyro Ball (150 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Sceptile: 256-303 (91.1 - 107.8%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO
136+ Atk Steelix Gyro Ball (108 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Sceptile: 186-219 (66.1 - 77.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Second part that id like to note, considering metagame has plenty of fighting types (virizion, hitmonlee, toxicroak, upcoming flame orb yama etc..), not every team can afford a hard check to each of these wallbreakers and setup sweepers, I would suggest slashing Chople Berry after Leftovers, its the second best options for teams that arent bulky passive balance, and wouldnt appreciate losing momentum vs some of these pokemon, especially since Hitmonlee is only good spinner in tier, and beating it 1v1 is invaluable as a rocker.

Best example of Chople berry combined with gyro ball and 0 speed IVs would be Steelix versing a Virizion, as after a close combat its revenged killed.

136+ Atk Steelix Gyro Ball (149 BP) vs. -1 0 HP / 0 Def Virizion: 352-415 (108.9 - 128.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Virizion Close Combat vs. 244 HP / 0 Def Chople Berry Steelix: 84-99 (23.8 - 28.1%) -- 90.1% chance to 4HKO

+2 252 Atk Virizion Close Combat vs. 244 HP / 0 Def Chople Berry Steelix: 166-196 (47.1 - 55.6%) -- 77.3% chance to 2HKO

Overall it acts as a great emergency check to lot of pokemon and its consistent in this metagame, but before implementing CC team would need to give approval

overview:
Steelix is the only good defensive steel type in the tier, which is valuable because that makes it very splashable.
  • This isn't very accurate when things like Togedemaru & Ferroseed are seeing usage, and it's also quite arbitrary for an opening statement. Instead, say something along the lines of "Steelix is one of the most consistent Stealth Rock setters in the tier due to its combination of titanic bulk, a spectacular defensive-typing and solid offensive presence."
  • Remove Drapion examples
It is one of the most reliable Stealth Rock setters in the tier, further adding to its splashability.
  • Remove this since you'll have that in the opening sentence.
  • Add that it can struggles to keep Rocks up versus Xatu.
moves:
  • mention that Heavy Slam also deals with Mega Audino while Gyro cannot as well as having more PP.
  • Add Curse, mention that it eases the matchup versus Sub BU Braviary, Xatu, variants of Golbat, and increases Steelix's offensive presence whilst making it harder to KO.

OO:
  • mention that with a Chople Berry Steelix has more freedom to run Heavy Slam as it will beat Virizion 1v1.
  • Remove Occa berry
C&C:
  • remove machamp
  • Steelix can OHKO Emboar and Lee, so they aren't really just taking "a chunk"
  • You should have a section exclusively for Xatu here
  • Add another section called "Strong Special Attackers", put emphasis on Vikavolt and mention stuff like Sigilyph, Vanilluxe, Mismagius
3/3, remember to get rid of those outdated mentions

(or however you want to reword it bc I may have botched accuracy, but the actually tangible benchmark, i.e. the fire blast one, should go first, and a jump point is confusing wording for new players + means nothing in practice really other than a minor optimisation if it doesn't secure any other benchmarks) A Brave nature and 0 Speed IVs are used to power up Gyro Ball, but if Heavy Slam is being used, then an Adamant nature and maximum Speed IVs are better.
