This steel frog has been a staple in the OU meta game since its original release in DPP and that has not changed in SM as it has remained on the mountain top due to its excellent bulk and amazing typing allowing it to blanket check many of the common threats in SMOU such as Tapu-lele, Volcarona, Jirachi, and Clefable. Although it does not appreciate taking certain coverage moves in Hidden Power Ground, Focus Blast, and Knock Off from the aforementioned Pokemons. Lava Plume is an excellent bait for many of the common Heatran switch ins namely Gliscor and Tyranitar threatening to severely hinder them with a burn. While Toxic is a great cover all move being able to cripple any mons attempting to set up in front of it. Protect allows Heatran to scout for many moves from Pokemons that are locked into a choice item namely scarf Landorus-Therian and Kartana while also giving Heatran a great way of safe leftovers recovery. Forgoing Earth Power for Roar allows Heatran to surprise many set up sweepers such as Substitute Quiver Dance Volcarona and Reflect Type Latios-Mega by phasing them out.
