Project Ultra SM Break This Team - WK 48 SKEs tail glow manaphy Rain (Voting)

OK, time for voting is up. CoC or me will tally up the votes when we have a bit more time to spare.

The team we're using this week is Finchinator 's Blacephalon + Mega Latios Offense.

This team is a relatively standard build with Scarf Blacephalon and Mega Latios, a core that Gary outlines here and you requested. I think that this team is solid and functions quite well. I will just go through the sets and synergy:
  • Blacephalon is the standard Choice Scarf set, but it has Explosion over what could be Will-O-Wisp, Knock Off, or a second Fire move. This lets you assure an OHKO on Volcarona, which you will likely need to revenge kill when facing. In addition, it can function as a nice emergency exit button later on in games when Blacephalon is no longer needed, but it is hard to safely pivot in to Kartana or pre-Ash Greninja while leaving the opponents Pokemon alive.
  • Mega-Latios is there in order to serve as a Tyranitar lure, but also do all of the things Latios generally does. It is a nice special attacker with a practical defensive presence that hits hard and fast. Earthquake on this thing compliments the Blacephalon very well and the additional bulk the mega evolution grants it also makes up for how fragile Blacephalon is sometimes, too.
  • Landorus-Therian is filling the generic Stealth Rock role on this team, but there is a bit more to this set. I have been using this variant of Landorus-T on some teams ever since the middle of Snake and I like it a lot because of the Knock support that it gives in the Celesteela match-up, making it infinitely easier to kill or chip to support Mega Latios and Kartana. It also takes pressure off of Blacephalon as it currently has to lock in to Fire Blast to make progress/force out Celesteela currently, which can potentially lead to getting outpredicted and trapped, giving Heatran a Flash Fire boost, or even letting Toxapex come in to wreck havoc in an ungodly fashion. On top of this, I have added Speed to this Landorus-T in order to outrun Adamant Zygarde, which the team otherwise is vulnerable to defensively, and Heatran, which is especially nice considering it gives another form of support for Blacephalon in case Mega Latios is not enough. I feel U-turn is not necessary here as the team lacks Pursuit and can function on hard-switches. The SAtk is to 2HKO opposing Leftovers Landorus-T with Hidden Power Ice and the SDef is for surviving Mega Manectric HP Ice from full. Before you ask: Yes, all of my Landorus-T spreads are this complex.
  • Next member is standard AV Magearna, which is nice to check things like Tapu Lele, Latios, and even Greninja in the early game (although I do feel this team might be a tad more Greninja vulnerable than I would like it to be and that might be because of the core of Blacephalon + Mega Latios being Greninja food). I am running less speed IVs than normal not only to assure that I underspeed opposing Magearna, but also to outslow Chansey, giving me a clean Volt Switch to whatever I choose. I have ran this spread for a while and I find it to be quite effective in the fat match-up. Additionally, I go with Iron Head to help me with opposing CM + SG Magearna, that otherwise can make quick work of my team.
  • Specs Ash Greninja is a very standard set and a pretty easy addition to the team, giving me a soft, temporary check to opposing Blacephalon, some priority to help on the revenge killing front, and even Spikes, which can be very helpful in the balance or fat match-ups.
  • Finally, SD Kartana with Defog is the last member and sort of a glue Pokemon for this team. It helps a lot against bulkier teams, but it also provides arguably necessary Defog support and a hard hitter to nuke things like Clefable, Landorus-T, etc. I wanted to use Grassium as a 'kill button' in a sense, but also because I knew that my team played in to Knocking Celesteela with Landorus-T, so I was aiming to chip it into range for +2 Sacred earlier on regardless, making one of the biggest Z-Sacred Sword targets taken care of in the team's gameplan (assuming it is executed properly). You could likely use Z-Sacred Sword if you wanted to in order to have a safety net in this sort of match-up, but generally I prefer the nuke on this sort of team with a STAB Z-Leaf Blade, so I went in this direction. A potential OO would be making this Z-Sacred Sword with Knock Off > Swords Dance and then making Landorus-T Protect with Leftovers over Knock Off with Rocky Helmet to give more longevity against things like Zygarde, but I like this variant much better against bulkier teams, so keep that in mind.

Tapu Bulu @ Assault Vest
Ability: Grassy Surge
EVs: 248 HP / 60 Atk / 56 SpD / 144 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Horn Leech
- Wood Hammer
- Superpower
- Nature's Madness

Tyranitar @ Tyranitarite
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 168 HP / 252 Atk / 88 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Pursuit
- Crunch
- Fire Punch

So the team's plan to deal with Tyranitar is lure it with Mega Latios and use Earthquake to chunk it, letting Blacephalon then do its thing. That's fine, but it relies on them not having Grassy Terrain up, so it gets a little stuck when Tyranitar is paired up with Tapu Bulu. Mega Tyranitar in particular is chosen because A) Trick immunity, and B) better rolls vs. Mega Latios. Even disregarding EQ tanking, it really loves the passive recovery that Grassy Terrain offers, because it really takes the edge off a lot of the hits I'm about to show you.

252 SpA Latios-Mega Draco Meteor vs. 168 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar-Mega in Sand: 142-168 (37 - 43.8%) -- 99.9% chance to 3HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
4 Atk Latios-Mega Earthquake vs. 168 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar-Mega in Grassy Terrain: 64-76 (16.7 - 19.8%) -- possible 7HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
252+ Atk Tyranitar-Mega Pursuit vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Latios-Mega: 192-228 (63.7 - 75.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after sandstorm damage

0 Atk Landorus-Therian Earthquake vs. 168 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar-Mega in Grassy Terrain: 102-122 (26.6 - 31.8%) -- 38.9% chance to 4HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
0 Atk Landorus-Therian Knock Off vs. 168 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar-Mega: 22-27 (5.7 - 7%) -- possibly the worst move ever -- Are you cheeky enough to switch into this?
-1 252+ Atk Tyranitar-Mega Crunch vs. 248 HP / 44+ Def Landorus-Therian: 109-129 (28.6 - 33.8%) -- 0.6% chance to 3HKO -- Ideally you wanna avoid this cuz of the helmet chip, but it really do be like that sometimes

252 SpA Blacephalon Fire Blast vs. 168 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar-Mega in Sand: 57-68 (14.8 - 17.7%) -- possible 8HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
4 Atk Blacephalon Explosion vs. 168 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar-Mega: 77-91 (20.1 - 23.7%) -- possible 6HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
252+ Atk Tyranitar-Mega Pursuit vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Blacephalon: 320-378 (129.5 - 153%) -- guaranteed OHKO

0 SpA Magearna Fleur Cannon vs. 168 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar-Mega in Sand: 204-240 (53.2 - 62.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
0 Atk Magearna Iron Head vs. 168 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar-Mega: 116-140 (30.2 - 36.5%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
252+ Atk Tyranitar-Mega Fire Punch vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Magearna: 190-224 (52.3 - 61.7%) -- 97.7% chance to 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

Ttar autoloses to Kartana and Greninja, unless Greninja has already locked itself into Spikes or Dark Pulse. This is why I chose Bulu's AV set -- just switch in as reliably as possible to keep terrain up and tank Greninja's hits. Nature's Madness is also really great for reliable 50% on anything that wants to come in, making Tyranitar's job that much easier.

252 SpA Choice Specs Greninja-Ash Hydro Pump vs. 248 HP / 56 SpD Assault Vest Tapu Bulu: 75-89 (21.8 - 25.9%) -- possible 5HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Horn Leech vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Greninja-Ash in Grassy Terrain: 488-576 (171.2 - 202.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Kartana Leaf Blade vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Tapu Bulu in Grassy Terrain: 126-149 (36.7 - 43.4%) -- 99.4% chance to 3HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Superpower vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Kartana: 198-234 (76.4 - 90.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery -- Note that with SD and the Atk/Def drops from Superpower, Bulu cannot 1v1 Kartana.

24- SpA Landorus-Therian Hidden Power Ice vs. 248 HP / 56 SpD Assault Vest Tapu Bulu: 56-66 (16.3 - 19.2%) -- possible 8HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
-1 60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Horn Leech vs. 248 HP / 44 Def Landorus-Therian in Grassy Terrain: 123-145 (32.2 - 38%) -- 96.3% chance to 3HKO
-1 60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 248 HP / 44 Def Landorus-Therian in Grassy Terrain: 195-231 (51.1 - 60.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO -- Why are you taking chip damage vs this thing? Just use Nature's Madness.

0 Atk Magearna Iron Head vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Tapu Bulu: 150-176 (43.7 - 51.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
0 SpA Magearna Fleur Cannon vs. 248 HP / 56 SpD Assault Vest Tapu Bulu: 115-136 (33.5 - 39.6%) -- 23.9% chance to 3HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Magearna in Grassy Terrain: 124-147 (34 - 40.3%) -- 46.5% chance to 3HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery -- If you use Nature's Madness on the switch-in the first time around, this gets a lot easier.

252 SpA Latios-Mega Psychic vs. 248 HP / 56 SpD Assault Vest Tapu Bulu: 112-133 (32.6 - 38.7%) -- 6.7% chance to 3HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
60+ Atk Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Latios-Mega in Grassy Terrain: 141-166 (46.8 - 55.1%) -- 69.5% chance to 2HKO -- Note that, after this, Pursuit will KO even if Latios doesn't switch out (assuming it doesn't Roost first)

Support: Tapu Bulu and Tyranitar can both give Kartana room to set up and also boost its leaf Blade, so ~at a minimum~ you want something that can revenge kill it. Given that this core can wear down AV Magearna pretty well, something that can capitalize on that to clean up is also appreciated. Latios is a solid choice in this regard, as the team has nothing that can tank a Draco Meteor once Magearna is sufficiently worn down. It also provides hazard control, mitigating the damage Greninja can do with its Spikes. The Pursuit trapping provided by Ttar, the Grassy Terrain from Tapu Bulu, and the core's ability to wear down Magearna means that, by pure chance, they pave the way for an easy Serperior sweep. I guess Serperior gets Defog now too? Wild. Both of those can be revenged by Greninja, but Specs Tapu Koko can't, if you're fond of mixing terrains. If you manage to Pursuit trap Blacephalon, Volcarona will appreciate that greatly -- it also makes Kartana hesitate before clicking Leaf Blade. Any set with Bug Buzz will probably do the trick -- just don't let Greninja activate its Battle Bond.

I could go on, but at a certain point that's just treading on everyone else's territory.

Once Trick Room is up, Magearna OHKO's everything on the team, barring Blacephalon and Magearna. Blacephalon can't switch in and is OHKO after a Soul-Heart boost, so the only thing in the way of a 6-0 victory is the opposing Magearna. This problem is easily solved with Marowak -Alola. It walls Magearna, and takes advantage of Trick Room to outspeed and KO everything after a Swords Dance.

Pelipper is only here to provide Kingdra with the much important Drizzle support, providing 7turns of Rain for Kingdra to abuse. It can't switch in on much, Blacephalon locked into Fire Blast, Magearnas Fluer Cannon and Greninja Spiking or Shurikening being the only safe switches. Shadow Ball 2hkos 50% of the time and Explosion dents while providing momentum to stop the Roost, keeping Pelipper low, Latios Draco Ohkos after Rocks while Psychic always 2hkos, LandoT can severely cripple with Knock Off, reducing Rain turns for Kingdra, Magearna can kill after Rocks or severely cripple with Volt Switch, however if Fluer Cannon is used, Pelipper can Roost avoiding the 4x damage from Volt Switch, Greninja 2hkos with Dark Pulse and Hydro whether Ash or not, and finally Kartana can 2hko with Leaf Blade on the switch or remove Pelipper from the current plane of existence with its Zmove.

Description:
Once Kingdra comes in, it just clicks Hydro Pump and something drops whilst in Rain. Resisting Greninjas priority and outpacing Blacephalon, the only way to revenge Kingdra is eating the hit and then before firing off an attack and hoping it Ohkos. Magearna and M.Latios are the only ones capable of this though if Greninja has reaches Ash form, Dark Pulse into Shuriken can pick of Kingdra, but Greninja eating an attack severley limits its number of switch in with Hazards. If Rocks are up, Surf can be used on the safe side, 2hkoing M.Latios and Greninja, 3hkoing Magearna and Ohkoing the rest and the option of straight Ohkoing Greninja with Hydro Pump 70% of the time.

Altaria has a good double type with its mega. His offensive physical version with DD can kill a large part of that team. Kartana with those movements is not a threat since it does not have Stab Steel. Ninja does not have its Ice Beam either, so everything is easier. EQ is good coverage for this time for Blace and Gearna. The rest is spam Return with pixilate + boost. Volcarona as help for steels like AV gearna + Quiver Dance zbug to eliminate remaining threats.

Sorry about being unable post the last week, I've had the pleasure of my internet being down for a week in my suburb because someone dug up and stole the copper nodes right before Christmas.

Anyway volcarona by dk skis the winner for the previous week. Congrats on breaking the team so easily. Thanks to Random Passerby for posting this week's team. Liking the cores so far. Keep posting everyone

I'll be setting up voting tommorow morning so this is the last chance to post cores or single pokemon. Surprised at the lack of tapu koko and other fast electrics since atleast on paper they fare decently

ItzAdhesive Please finish your post

Some observations

  • Specs Koko + literally anything that pressures and weakens Magearna (NP Hoopa-U comes to mind) rips apart this team because the team frankly has nothing for Koko once Magearna is weakened. Hell even just Volting around and wearing down Magearna can beat this team on its own.
  • Rain tears this team a new one, with the Water-type resist being Magearna and Swampert outspending and hitting everything for insane damage. I’m pretty sure there’s a replay of me 6-0ing this team with rain somewhere simply because of how weak it is vs it.
  • Opposing Blace can also he a huge problem because the switch in is Greninja and Specs basically just claims one whenever it switches in. The team has to rely on getting rocks up and aggressively pivoting to pressure it and doesn’t really have anything resembling a shrefire switch in.
Overall, this is a pretty solid team with counterplay for pretty much every common threat but some mons are just brutal for it to face and can easily overwhelm the build.

I'm Voting Kingdra + Peliper and Wrapping up this round of voting. As a result The Winner for this week is Volcanoheadproduction(yt) . As good as some of the other nominations are Rain simply bends this team a new one. Congrats on making the archive.

This weeks team is taken from the Ultra Sumo team building thread and is centered Tapu Koko and Kyurem Black as well featuring mega Zor. Built by tsmugs in collaboration with a few others the Utilises the core to break down balance teams before cleaning with Either Greninja or Mega Zor. Performs fairly well taking advantage of the balance filled meta but has some issue's with fast mons and Prioty so not it as you will when making nominations

EVs: 248 HP / 136 Def / 124 SpD
Calm Nature

Explanation: This is something I made with imsosorrylol during olt and it was used in snake as well. We came up with the idea of Kyurem+Koko+Sciz as the offensive core because theres very little that walls all three and the volt turn combo is really nice for getting kyurem in easily to claim kills. We used mantine as our defoger because of the ash gren and volcarona weakness. We gave the mantine haze to be able to deal with opposing SD scizor. Defensive lando was added to give the team stealth rocks as well as a solid switch into a lot of physical threats. Lastly we added scarf gren to be able to revenge kill volcarona and give the team more momentum. It also gives the team another form of hazards to whittle down the opposing switch ins to koko and kyurem. This team has been fairly successful for myself and sorry, Hope you like it :)

Magnezone+ Kartana breaks this team fairly easy. Once Specs/Z move Magnezone traps Mega-Scizor Scarf or Z move Kartana completely goes ham. Especially if you manage to get rocks up early in the game.

I recommend the following sets as Scarf Tana can only be revenge killed by Scarf Gren and Z move Mag is consistent at trapping scizor and is an annoyance to Koko, Mantine and LOKB wich lacks EP and dies to Corkscrew Crash.

Kartana @ Choice Scarf

Ability: Beast Boost

EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

Jolly Nature

- Leaf Blade

- Sacred Sword

- Smart Strike

- Defog

Magnezone @ Steelium Z

SG Magearna rolls through this team, only being stopped by Mega Scizor. This issue is solved with Magnezone, who traps and KOs it. Magnezone also does well against the team, 2HKO everything. However, being Choice locked makes it very reliant on prediction.

Specs Tapu Koko tears this team to fucking shreds as long as you don't play it like an idiot. Between your STABs and coverage, Tapu Koko OHKOs every member of the team straight up besides Mega Scizor and their own Tapu Koko. Additionally, all it takes is one correct prediction with HP Ice to just let Tapu Koko relentlessly spam Volt Switch and steal away all the momentum in the matchup. When using this team, I literally cross my fingers hoping not to see Tapu Koko at preview whenever I load up a game with it because it's an incredibly frustrating matchup. Obviously, Tapu Koko can be played around to some degree, but it relies on pristine prediction and heavy offensive pressure on Tapu Koko itself.

Ability: Teravolt

Volcarona @ Buginium Z
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature

Together these Pokemon but heavy pressure on the team's main walls, and only Greninja is capable of immediately threatening this core, but it cant OHKO Kyurem-B with Rock Slide, which means that it still gets pressured by it. Both Kyurem-B and Rocks can prove to be problems too but those can be covered by teammates.

Gastrodon alone can take Koko, KyuremB, Mantine (and wear it down with toxic), Lando and Greninja's attacks pretty well. It can also deal with mscizor and burn it with scald, but Zapdos does a better job at resisting it's both STABS and OHKOing it with heat wave.

252 Atk Protean Greninja U-turn vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Gastrodon: 127-150 (29.8 - 35.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

Setting up voting shortly. Apoligizes for delay in setting it up. Net issues + an annoyingly long stocktake preperation have absorbed much of my time. As such if you want to nominate anything else do so now.

Jordy Finish your nomination please

The teams Psychic resists, Greninja and Scizor fail to touch Lele, due to coverage issues or Psychic Terrain blocking Bullet Punch. Lele outspeeds everything apart from Greninja, and can also 2hko everything apart from M.Scizor. This is where Magnezone comes in, Magnezone forces M.Scizor to always U-Turn, keeping it low, and applies pressure to Mantine too, either forcing to Recover and have a reasonable chance to be 2hkoed by the next Psychic after the Rocks chip damage, or defog and keep that Rocks chip. Magnezone also works as a great switch into Greninja, not fearing any of its attacks, and Greninja has to fear staying in Vs Lele, due to protean changing its type. Magnezone also applies pressure itself to the team, as the Steel resists can't touch Magnezone and threatened by an SE attacks, while Lando is outsped and both Koko Kyube cant Ohko, forcing something to take a hard hit or be outright Ohkoed.
252 SpA Tapu Lele Psychic vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Scizor-Mega in Psychic Terrain: 111-131 (32.3 - 38.1%) -- 97.1% chance to 3HKO
