Usage stats for Smogon Classic's RBY Cup III will be posted here. Those fearing scouting need not worry as these stats will only account for public games. This does not include hidden rooms on Smogtours as all games there are intended to be public (note to people who do that: anyone who wants to scout you will just look through URLs). Regardless, a large portion of games are played in public, so the stats you see will be almost perfectly accurate.

**Note: Win % will be low due to games with unrevealed Pokemon**

I see a pattern where the big four are condensing towards the 100% mark as rounds go on. As of round 3, Alakazam is also above the 60% mark, more than twice as high as the #6, Starmie. Could one make a case for Alakazam being part of a "big five", or is the drop down to #5 too big?

It just has to be maintained over a while imo. I remember a few years back when zam was also by far the most popular lead and that peak subsided along with Egg as a counter lead. It's always been the definitive 5th ranked mon in RBY but it would have to close that gap and hold it before there was talk of a Big 5.

The conventional wisdom is that Zam isn't quite on par with the other S rank mons, and I tend to agree in that none of Zam's roles see it perform at the same level as the S rank mons. The thing is though, that Zam can function at literally any point of a match, whether it's a lead, Chansey-lite or lategame sweeper. The distinction between lead and non-lead Zam is a crucial point, and I suspect the main reason Zam is ranked so highly. Outside the lead spot it's a formidable threat, imo on par with Zap and Bro, but that's not considering its utility in the lead position, where it's arguably the best in the game. So it can perform two roles at an extremely high level, but the distinction between lead and non-lead Zam is that leads can sometimes seem a bit isolated from the rest of the team imo, as you invariably have to plan on them taking sleep at some point, which in my experience makes non-lead Zam a separate entity to lead Zam. So it feels like two separate things, but gets counted as one. Anyway, that's why I think Zam might be prone to experiencing inflated usage, I'd feel redundant to talk about why its flaws prevent it from being S rank.

Also I can't bear to see lead Egg mentioned without warning against it. Don't lead Egg!!!!!

I maintain Alakazam is better than Snorlax in the first place. (And probably Chansey too TBH, as they're surprisingly similar.) Snorlax isn't even that good since the whole BS-can't-PAR-Normals discovery thing, now that it can't even reliably 1v1 Chansey which used to be its primary purpose. Now it just exists to blow up its doppelganger, or 80% of Tauros, because it honestly isn't that great at switching into anything except Chansey (which it sucks at killing now anyway) and non-STAB Starmie as practically everything else 3HKOs it (if only barely) and outspeeds it. It's ubiquitous because it's nigh-guaranteed to get a kill, but it's also nigh-guaranteed to do exactly that and no more in the modern metagame. It's basically just condensing the game into a 5v5 (or even a 4v4). Does that make it "good?" ... Probably yeah, actually, but not to the point it should be ubiquitous. Straight trading doesn't win games.

Meanwhile, Alakazam is basically Chansey who trades chance of freeze for Tauros-level dueling power and general offensive pressure. You can't kill it on the special side and it's very difficult to switch in anything that isn't its fellow Recoverers, i.e. everything physical that can actually threaten Zam, and then it still has the tempo advantage on Special drops to force a predictable switch and/or set up a favorable switch out itself. For crying out loud, Zam's biggest weakness is running out of Psychic PP. It's so stupidly threatening that the best answer to it isn't even killing it, it's throwing other Psychics (+ Chansey) at it long enough to run it out of juice.

If you want a snorlax that can reliably 1v1 chansey just run rest? I mean Reflect and Amnesia are both pretty damn good at doing regular Lax things while outlasting Chansey. Also the difficulty of paralysing chansey is massively overblown js, it's still the go-to para absorber (teams that have an alternate pokemon that reliably absorbs para while preventing it from reaching Chansey represent a very narrow selection of teams), and once you've got it paralysed you can still go to town as per normal. Like I can't speak for you but in my experience Lax does a hell of a lot better than trading (except if the opponent goes for a Lax ditto), because contrary to what you seem to be making out it still shits on chansey most of the time, and with Chansey being ubiquitous there's plenty of opportunity to beat up on the opposing team. I honestly don't see how it's merely trading unless you're just throwing it out there without trying to spread para or you're leaving it in on its checks.

If anything's gimping Lax it's fucking Reflect Chansey

Paralyzing Chansey is relatively trivial, but you still have to do it beforehand since Lax can't on its own and it can paralyze Lax in return, which is why you need Rest to shake off your PAR and/or Hyper Beam to pressure it at higher HP. (Of the two alone, I'd say Hyper Beam is better because it makes Snorlax more self-sufficient.) And Rest just sets the opponent up to switch out freely and regain the initiative by forcing Snorlax out, unless you're the shitty Tanklax set with both Reflect and Amnesia which just gets stalled to death because it's not good at anything except not dying. As much as I'd rail against Reflect Chansey too, it's popular despite my protests and very effective at shutting down even the Lax most tailored to beat it, assuming it has Ice Beam anyway to fish for Freeze.

Anecdotally? I watched most of Beds' RBY games this past SPL live (i.e. legit players and teams in serious matches), at his request because he wanted to prove to me how good Snorlax supposedly is too, and literally a good 80% of the time both Snorlax just blew each other up. (Most of the rest of the time, they switched into Tauros and chunked it for 80%.) Frankly, it was a monumental event when Snorlax actually managed to do better than straight 1:1. Why? Probably because its biggest threat is blowing something up and Snorlax is the least valuable things most players have to throw out to eat the Selfdestruct! It has little defensive value, because virtually everything outspeeds and 3HKOs routinely leading to the scenario of "switch in and take a hit, take a second hit as you blow up and trade because the third hit would KO," and its offensive prowess is limited by its lack of Speed, both in the sense that it's easy to revenge kill by literally everything and the lack of crit rate.

Kinda reminds me of Golem actually: slow but not quite strong enough, can't take a hit either, leans on Explosion to make it relevant. At least Golem resists Normal, outspeeds Rhydon, and hard counters Zapdos in a way even old Snorlax never owned Chansey so hard. Or there's Cloyster who can Clamp cheese Chansey, in addition to a lot of other stuff, beats Snorlax much better than another Snorlax and you still get Explosion again. It's also oddly useful against Tauros in a way few mons are. I suppose neither beat Starmie though... you win this round, Snorlax. :pirate:
