Kabutops [QC 0/3]

Not open for further replies.

[OVERVIEW]
  • Great offensive type combination with few resisting types
  • Great attack and decent speed make it a decent wallbreaker, especially under rain
  • Access to STAB priority with Aqua Jet
  • Weak to Fighting, Ground, and Grass, all of which are common
  • Low HP stat ruins its solid Defense, and makes its poor Special Defense even worse
  • Swift Swim makes it a fantastic sweeper when used in Rain
  • Other Water Types such as Samurott or Vaporeon provide significant competition as they are both more bulky and can do similar damage without rain support
  • Struggles with its Speed outside of rain
[SET]

Moves
========
Name: Offensive Wallbreaker
Move 1: Swords Dance
Move 2: Stone Edge
Move 3: Liquidation
Move 4: Aqua Jet
Item: Rockium Z / Life Orb
Ability: Swift Swim
Nature: Adamant / Jolly
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

Moves
========
  • Swords Dance raises Kabutops strength to very high levels
  • Stone Edge does great damage and is Kabutops's most powerful Rock STAB
  • Liquidation is a very powerful physical Water move that can even lower the Defenses of bulkier opponents, and it hits very hard under rain
  • Aqua Jet is great for revenge killing or finishing off faster targets
  • Rapid Spin makes Kabutops a good hazard remover as its speed stat makes it one of the faster Spinners
Set Details
========
  • Max Attack and Speed make it very threatening
  • Life Orb makes Kabutops hit with a constant powerful offense
  • Rockium Z gives Kabutops the ability to OHKO tankier opposing Pokemon with Continental Crush
  • Jolly nature helps Kabutops outspeed most other Pokemon, especially under rain.
  • Adamant is best used when rain setting teammates can already set up rain, as Kabutops can hit a lot harder if it isn't worrying about Speed

Usage Tips
=========
  • STAB Aqua Jet makes it great at revenge killing
  • It's offense can scare opponents into switching, giving a free Swords Dance
  • If Kabutops is in rain, double speed and boosted STAB Water moves make it a terrifying sweeper
  • It's frailty it a reason to be cautious when using Swords Dance
  • Very underwhelming unboosted offense outside of rain
  • Weak to common Pokemon like Whimsicott, Heliolisk, and Venusaur

Team Options
========
  • Bulky Grass Types that can take Grass or Ground types for Kabutops and Kabutops can cover their Flying and Fire weaknesses
  • Users of Healing Wish / Wish like Audino and Mesprit that can give Kabutops a second chance if Kabutops is worn down
  • Heal Bell users that can get rid of Burn or paralysis
  • Rain users such as Liepard and Uxie who can setup Rain very easy
  • Memento and Parting Shot Pokemon like Silvally and Uxie can give Kabutops an easier Swords Dance
  • Rain Sweepers such as Omastar, Ludicolo, and Qwilfish partner well with Kabutops as they can be used if Kabutops would be more disadvantageous in that situation

Other Options
========
  • Rain Dance will aid Kabutops in getting the Speed boost from Swift Swim, but having another team member do it for Kabutops would be preferable
  • Superpower is a good coverage move for countering Ice, Steel, and Dark types, but comes with stat drops
  • Aerial Ace hits Virizion and Toxicroak very hard, but hits very few others hard
  • Knock Off is a great utility move, but doesn't hit as hard as Waterfall or Stone Edge would
  • Choice Scarf is easier if you are running a Rapid Spin set and helps Kabutops outspeed others outside of Rain

Checks and Counters
========

**Faster Pokemon**: Without rain Kabutops struggles with outspeeding threats

**Bulky Water Types**: Kabutops has barely any answers to other Water types such as Slowbro and Vaporeon, who make easy work of an unboosted Kabutops

**Bulky Grass Types**: Venusaur and Gourgeist-XL counter Kabutops as it has very few things that can cover Grass Types, and they can OHKO or 2HKO Kabutops easily

**Fighting Types**: Virizon and Toxicroak especially as they resist Kabutops STAB attacks and easily OHKO Kabutops, Life Orb Hitmonlee is also a threat as a Mach Punch can KO a weakened Kabutops

**Stat Drops**: Jellicent and Granbull can severely weaken Kabutops with Intimidate, Will-o-wisp, and Thunder Wave

**Weather**: Vanilluxe, Aurorus, and Liepard can remove rain and leave Kabutops vulnerable.

So first off, your analysis needs to match the given format: http://www.smogon.com/forums/thread...ons-read-before-posting.3588426/#post-7113521

For instance: [OVERVIEW], [SET], etc.

**Bulky Grass-types**:

Now for the actual analysis...

- In the Overview, note Kabutops's access to Swift Swim, making it one of the tier's main choices for Rain sweepers. Also point out its competition outside of Rain, such as Shell Smash Barbaracle being a greater late-game threat, whereas Samurott's better bulk and defensive typing give it easier opportunities to use Swords Dance.
- You can elaborate on how it's "frail for its typing"; you can start off with its rather poor HP stat which doesn't take even resisted hits that well.

- For the set, I don't think Hone Claws is worth much of a mention. You make your Stone Edge safer in the process of boosting, but an equally safe alternative is just +2 Waterfall which also hits harder. If you really wanted an 'accurate Stone Edge', Rockium Z is a better choice since +2 Continental Crush hits obscene levels of power, and you still have Waterfall to fall back onto. Oh yeah, you might want to mention in Moves how Waterfall is Kabutops's most reliable STAB move in general, not just Water-type.
- Swords Dance is an important move for Kabutops as it lacks breaking power and loses in various 1v1 situations otherwise. Knock Off doesn't provide Kabutops with nearly as much benefit as any of Kabutops's main attacks and thus shouldn't be slashed, but it can still be mentioned in Other Options.
- Rapid Spin on the other hand is a valuable commodity, especially on offensive Pokemon. It can be moved from Other Options to the Moves section for anyone who's willing to give up one of Kabutops's moves for it, depending on their team.

Here's an idea on what the set should look like:
Name: Offensive Wallbreaker
Move 1: Swords Dance
Move 2: Stone Edge
Move 3: Waterfall
Move 4: Aqua Jet
Item: Rockium Z / Life Orb
Ability: Swift Swim
Nature: Adamant / Jolly
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
- For Set Details, elaborate on what the natures are used for, and you have to account for both in and out of Rain. You can refer to the Speed tiers list (http://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/sm-nu-speed-tiers-role-compendium.3606163/) to see what benchmarks each nature can and should hit.
- Weak Armor is probably better delegated to Other Options. There are few physical hits in the tier that Kabutops can take, and even fewer physical attackers don't just promptly destroy it with a coverage move against its weakened Defense, denying any Swords Dance opportunities. Swift Swim is a better niche for Kabutops anyway.
- Frankly Lum Berry is rather subpar on Kabutops; Kabutops can still risk large damage from most foes using status either due to its many weaknesses or its poor special bulk, and Samurott is a better user of Lum Berry for this reason.

- In Set Details, place more emphasis on its sweeping capabilities with Swift Swim, blazing past foes and hitting them with boosted Waterfalls, which can also lessen the need to Swords Dance.

- For Team Options, you should talk about its partners for Rain teams, namely Rain setters such as Uxie and Liepard and Rain sweepers such as Ludicolo, Seismitoad, Omastar, or Qwilfish. You can even make a note of Memento Uxie, which not only sets Rain for Kabutops but can also make it easier for it to set up Swords Dance.

- For Other Options, we've already talked about Rockium Z being on the main set and the Rapid Spin being transferred to Moves, so you can omit those.
- You want to emphasize on how specific or lackluster some of these coverage moves are: Giga Drain hits only Seismitoad, X-Scissor only takes out the rare Malamar but otherwise barely outdamages Stone Edge at best, and Superpower hits things like Guzzlord and Ferroseed but comes with unfavorable stat drops. You can even toss in a mention of Aerial Ace to hit Virizion and Toxicroak, but hits very little else as a drawback.
- You can talk about Weak Armor here, and mention the flaws in Weak Armor I talked about in the Set Details earlier.

- For how simple you describe the ease in responding to Kabutops (hint: it's not that easy, especially in the Rain), the Checks and Counters sections are really bareboned, and even mentions Machamp which is no longer in this tier. I expect the sections to be more fleshed out, such as including more things like Virizion and Toxicroak, more situational answers such as Vileplume and Druddigon if Kabutops is not boosted, or outright new sections such as 'Bulky Water-types' like Seismitoad, Slowbro, & Vaporeon or 'Faster Pokemon', many of which outspeed outside of Rain, and a handful can outrun it even if Rain is up, such as Timid Ludicolo (vs Adamant Kabutops) or Choice Scarf Vanilluxe. In fact, "Status" is extremely vague as an answer, so you should be more specific on which particular Pokemon would be reliant on it to deal with Kabutops, such as Druddigon or Vaporeon. Try to sort this section the best you can.

After I looked over it a bit more I do realize what I did wrong, I'm dreadfully sorry and I should take this more serious in the future. I'll get this more fleshed out soon

Not QC but

"Low HP stat and poor defensive stats makes it very frail"

I think this should be worded more so like "Low HP stat offsets its solid Defense stat and makes its already low Special Defense worse." since the defense stat really isn't too bad so it shouldn't be grouped as "poor" with its Special Defense.
