Gengar is getting more recognition on Poison teams due to Choice Specs and its STAB Shadow Ball notably improving the Psychic matchup. Originally, Choice Scarf Gengar was the standard in the Isle of Armor metagame because it revenge killed Pokemon like Dragapult and Choice Scarf Hydreigon. However, current Poison teams have a more defensive backbone in Amoonguss and Galarian Slowking to better support the type's needs, allowing Gengar to have a more aggressive set. Thunderbolt targets Water- and Flying-types like Toxapex, Mantine, and Celesteela, while Dazzling Gleam hits Dark-type Pokemon like Zarude and Krookodile. Alternatively, Focus Blast can be used over Dazzling Gleam to hit Steel-types like Melmetal and Ferrothorn in addition to the aforementioned Dark-types. Trick cripples defensive Pokemon like Blissey and Drapion and setup sweepers like Tapu Fini behind dual screens. Gengar appreciates Amoonguss, which checks Choice Scarf Excadrill and provides Spore to give Gengar opportunities to come in on sleeping Pokemon. Galarian Slowking, Skuntank, and Drapion are great at checking fast Psychic-types like Choice Scarf Tapu Lele and Latias.
