Gastrodon @ Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain
EVs: 56 HP / 16 Atk / 252 Def / 184 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Recover
- Earthquake
- Ice Beam
- Toxic
Despite being PU by usage, Gastrodon is very useful on RU balance teams. Gastrodon's great defensive typing and ability allow it to take on some of the tier's titans like Zygarde-10%, Mega Blastoise, Noivern, Metagross, and Raikou. Recover and Leftovers are crucial, letting Gastrodon remain healthy. Ice Beam is favored over a Water-type move like Scald, as it hits Dragon- and Flying-type Pokemon for super effective damage and also pressures Grass-type Pokemon wishing to switch in. With this spread, Gastrodon can OHKO Barbaracle after Shell Smash and hazard damage with Earthquake. Toxic can stall out Pokemon that fit in the balance archetype and cripple Gastrodon's checks upon entry. Unfortunately, Gastrodon is massively pressured by Grass-type Pokemon, and residual damage from status means it loses to many bulky Water-type Pokemon in the tier such as Slowbro and Milotic. Goodra, Dragalge, and Registeel make good teammates, as they are able to take on the tier's bulky Water- and Grass-types.
