First of all, on behalf of the DPP Council, I would like to thank everybody who has participated in the DPP Latias discussion thus far. There has been a lot of great discussion and feedback, both positive and negative, and lot of renewed interest in the tier. Over the past month, DPP has risen to become the most active old gen ladder, and we have been seeing several fresh faces and new teams in this time.
The DPP Council has been closely monitoring the ladder over the course of November. Since the freeing of Latias, activity on the DPP ladder has roughly doubled, even without an active suspect. While activity slowed a bit over the holidays, we are on pace to reach over 29000 battles by the end of the month, a new high for the tier. The ladder has also begun to settle a bit. Shortly after Latias was freed we saw a huge spike in Latias usage, putting it just under Tyranitar in usage, as well as big drops in usage of things like Breloom, Infernape and Zapdos. Things have calmed down a bit since then, however. Latias still remains a common sight, but it is no longer sitting so close to the top of the usage stats. Both Heatran and Jirachi have risen above Latias in usage, Breloom has risen back into the top 10, and in general the metagame has settled a bit.
As members of the DPP Council, we have seen the metagame evolve quite a lot over the past decade. Latias in particular is an issue that came up many times over the course of DPP's tenure, and many of us who played when DPP was the active generation felt that Latias remained banned solely because of the timing of BW's release. Latias was legal for a large portion of DPP's run, and some of us have been fighting for years to allow it to see a proper suspect test. However, a lot of people brought up some serious issues with our proposed test. People argued that the timeline felt rushed, that there was not adequate time for the metagame to settle, and that the ladder did not experience enough activity to properly gauge Latias's competitive impact in a suspect.
We on the DPP Council strongly feel that moving forward with a Latias suspect is the right move for DPP, and regardless of the results of the suspect, will result in a stronger and more active tier. However, we do not want to ignore the issues that people have brought up. Therefore, we are making the following changes to our suspect:
There will be no suspect ladder. Instead, the standard DPP OU ladder will remain open and Latias will be legal in it for the duration of the test. Those who wish to participate in this suspect test will instead use a fresh, suspect-specific alt. The requirements are as follows:
Livetour finalists will only be required to play 30 games total on the ladder, though they still must meet the81 79 GXE requirement.
In addition to concerns with the suspect itself, several people expressed issues with the scope of old gen councils and the propriety of modifying old gens after their conclusion. Obviously the current members of the DPP Council feel pretty strongly that this is the right decision for the tier, but to make sure that we are looking at all possible viewpoints, we have decided to expand the council a bit. To this end, we have added Jimmy Turtwig as council member. He has a long history with the tier, and a more conservative approach to tiering, so he should bring some excellent and fresh viewpoints to our council. Thanks to Jimmy for agreeing to join us.

+ ---- + ------------------ + --------- + ------ + ------- + ------ + ------- +As members of the DPP Council, we have seen the metagame evolve quite a lot over the past decade. Latias in particular is an issue that came up many times over the course of DPP's tenure, and many of us who played when DPP was the active generation felt that Latias remained banned solely because of the timing of BW's release. Latias was legal for a large portion of DPP's run, and some of us have been fighting for years to allow it to see a proper suspect test. However, a lot of people brought up some serious issues with our proposed test. People argued that the timeline felt rushed, that there was not adequate time for the metagame to settle, and that the ladder did not experience enough activity to properly gauge Latias's competitive impact in a suspect.
We on the DPP Council strongly feel that moving forward with a Latias suspect is the right move for DPP, and regardless of the results of the suspect, will result in a stronger and more active tier. However, we do not want to ignore the issues that people have brought up. Therefore, we are making the following changes to our suspect:
- Longer, expanded suspect. The suspect test will now run from November 30th to December 28th. By extending the total time for the suspect, we hope to address activity concerns on the ladder and continue to allow time for the metagame to properly settle. This will provide almost one full month of testing, in addition to the Latias-legal ladder we had in November. Ending on December 28 also means that if Latias remains banned, Latias will be removed from the ladder a full ten days prior to SPL's start date, in case SPL players wish to use the ladder to test teams.
- Live tours. To get a good feel for the competitive impact of Latias, the DPP Council will be hosting weekly livetours alongside the suspect. As an incentive to participate, finalists in each live tournament will have reduced ladder requirements for the suspect test. We plan to host at least 6 live tours, which means at least 12 people will be able to vote with reduced requirements. Players will be allowed to use Latias in these tours. We will anounce the livetour dates and times in the near future.
- Ladder reward. To make things interesting, we will be offering a Latias plush to the best finisher in the suspect! Whoever finishes first on the ladder by December 28 @ 11:59 PM EST will be awarded with a cute Latias plush (courtesy of papa Hogg).
There will be no suspect ladder. Instead, the standard DPP OU ladder will remain open and Latias will be legal in it for the duration of the test. Those who wish to participate in this suspect test will instead use a fresh, suspect-specific alt. The requirements are as follows:
- All games must be played on the Pokemon Showdown! DPP OU ladder on a fresh alt with the following format: "DPLS (Nick)." For example, I might register the alt DPLS Tamahome to ladder with. You must meet the listed format in order to qualify.
- Play a minimum of 60 games on the Latias ladder, and
- Have a GXE of 81 or above.
Livetour finalists will only be required to play 30 games total on the ladder, though they still must meet the
In addition to concerns with the suspect itself, several people expressed issues with the scope of old gen councils and the propriety of modifying old gens after their conclusion. Obviously the current members of the DPP Council feel pretty strongly that this is the right decision for the tier, but to make sure that we are looking at all possible viewpoints, we have decided to expand the council a bit. To this end, we have added Jimmy Turtwig as council member. He has a long history with the tier, and a more conservative approach to tiering, so he should bring some excellent and fresh viewpoints to our council. Thanks to Jimmy for agreeing to join us.
