High-low My-low
As Pokemon generations progress, most Pokemon struggle to maintain the viability in tiers that they once dominated, and while they're still good, they are either relegated to the title of merely decent Pokemon, or sometimes even niche picks. However, this is the exact opposite for Cobalion, as after returning for a third round of UU, it has established itself as more of a metagame staple than ever before. Thanks to the advent of Fightinium Z, Cobalion is capable of boosting with Swords Dance and breaking past Pokemon that it would otherwise immensely struggle to damage, such as Hippowdon, Rotom-W, and Alomomola. It also has the option of using Steelium Z to nail the likes of Nidoking, Gliscor, and Amoonguss with a boosted Corkscrew Crash. Cobalion's access to Rock Polish allows it to boost its already good Speed to heavily threatening levels, while its good bulk and type advantages against a plethora of top tier threats allow for plentiful setup opportunities. Overall, Cobalion's fantastic offensive capabilities and positive traits in general allow it to stay among UU's top threats.
Cobalion @ Fightinium Z / Steelium Z / Shuca Berry
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Iron Head
- Swords Dance
- Rock Polish / Substitute / Stealth Rock
By virtue of Cobalion's typing, bulk, and access to Swords Dance, it can find opportunities to set up against Pokemon like Mega Aggron, Scizor, and Mega Sharpedo. Rock Polish is an option in addition to Cobalion's STAB attacks and Swords Dance that allows it to boost its Speed to levels where revenge killing it with faster Pokemon is near impossible. It can use Substitute instead, however, to punish the switches it forces and set up more reliably. Stealth Rock is another option in the last slot that can be used to set entry hazards in addition to sweeping. Fightinium Z grants access to All-Out Pummeling, which when boosted, allows Cobalion to OHKO the likes of Rotom-W, Mega Steelix, and Mega Aggron after Stealth Rock. Steelium Z allows it to lure in and remove Gliscor, Amoonguss, and the rare Nidoqueen. Shuca Berry allows Cobalion to tank one super effective Ground-type hit, which can severely benefit it in matchups against Gliscor and Nidoking.
While Cobalion's typing allows it to force many threats out and tank some hits while setting up, it also keeps Cobalion from hitting Pokemon like Jellicent, Slowbro, Tentacruel, Doublade, and Chandelure all too hard. Cobalion also struggles from a lack of immediate power, poor Special Defense, and weaknesses to common types in Ground, Fighting, and Fire. Despite these flaws, it is an offensive Pokemon that's capable of performing wonderfully for its team, and as one of the UU tier's most defining forces, Cobalion is definitely something you should consider using on your team!
