By using maximum Special Attack EVs and Hidden Power Electric, Walrein gains the ability to hit the entire tier for sizeable damage. Walrein's excellent defensive stats allow it to trade down against almost every offensive Pokemon, taking big hits from the likes of Muk, Persian, and Shelgon while firing back with its own powerful attacks. Surf and Ice Beam are Walrein's best STAB attacks, and they have complementary coverage. Walrein's great Special Attack means one of its most common checks, Clefairy, has to spam Soft-Boiled to survive against it, which leaves it vulnerable to Ice Beam's freeze chance. Hidden Power Electric is used to smack Water-types that resist Walrein's STAB attacks, 2HKOing Staryu while reliably 3HKOing opposing Walrein. Hidden Power Electric is the preferred choice to OHKO Pelipper, but if Walrein's team lacks a Grass-type, Hidden Power Grass can be used to OHKO Whiscash. Encore disrupts walls that try to heal through Walrein's assault, notably locking Frillish and Clefairy into using their recovery moves, which prevents these two Pokemon from potentially walling Walrein and crippling it with status. Alternatively, Protect can strengthen Walrein's role as a check to offensive Pokemon by stuffing Persian's Fake Out, gaining valuable Leftovers recovery, and scouting Choice item users. Maximum Special Attack EVs are used to make Walrein as threatening as possible, and enough Speed is used to outrun Pawniard and most Solrock and Meganium. The remaining EVs are dedicated to Defense so that Walrein can check Persian and Shelgon as reliably as possible, although these EVs could be put into HP without a tremendous difference. A Timid nature with maximum Speed investment can be used for targets like neutral-natured Pelipper and Kingler, but Walrein sorely misses the power of Modest. Thick Fat's effective resistance to Fire is not commonly useful, but it can help in playing around Simisear.

Walrein fits best on offensive teams that need to consolidate Walrein's regular role as a bulky attacker and Hidden Power's utility in checking Water-types. Attacking leads that can reliably prevent Stealth Rock or punish the opponent for attempting to use the move are very valuable to Walrein; Leafeon, Kingler, and offensive Meganium all threaten to OHKO or set up on the Rock-types, such as Solrock, while Clefairy is stuffed by Taunt from the likes of Persian, Grumpig, or Emolga. Glaceon stacks many weaknesses with Walrein, but they can break almost any defensive core together. Walrein's Ice typing and lack of recovery often results in it being overwhelmed offensively; Meganium and Clefairy are staple defensive Pokemon that can switch into a variety of Walrein's bad matchups, such as Raichu, Leafeon, and Mienfoo.

By donning maximum Special Attack EVs and dropping Substitute for Hidden Power Electric Walrein gains the ability to hit the entire tier for sizeable damage. Not needing to preserve health to use Substitute allows Walrein to play more aggressively; taking big hits from the likes of Muk, Persian, and Dragon Dance users, while firing back its own powerful attacks. You should avoid talking about this set in terms of other sets. Remove them mentions about Substitute, and just talk about what this set does well Surf and Ice Beam are Walrein's most powerful STAB attacks and have complementary coverage, with the latter having a nasty 10% freeze chance. Freeze is Dex info unless you can specify that it can use freezes in a way that any other Ice Beam user cannot Hidden Power Electric is used to smack Water-types that resist Walrein's STABs STAB Attacks, 2HKOing Staryu while reliably 3HKOing Walrein without Stealth Rock. Hidden Power Electric is the preferred choice to OHKO Pelipper, but if a team lacks a Grass-type, then Hidden Power Grass can be used to OHKO Whiscash. Encore disrupts walls that try to heal through Walrein's assault, notably locking Frillish and Clefairy into using their healing moves, as these two Pokemon could otherwise heal on wall Walrein and cripple it with status. Alternatively, Protect strengthens Walrein's role as a check to offensive Pokemon. Protect stuffs Persian's Fake Out, gains Walrein valuable Leftovers recovery, and scouts Choice item users. Combine these two sentences Maximum Special Attack is used to make Walrein as threatening as possible, and enough Speed is used to outrun Pawniard and most Solrock and Meganium. A Timid nature with maximum Speed can be used for targets like neutral nature max Speed Pelipper and Kingler, but Walrein sorely misses the power of Modest. Thick Fat is a mediocre ability with Walrein's natural resistances, but it's the best Walrein has, and the added Fire-resistance can be situationally helpful vs Simisear. Just state that it lets Walrein resist Fire, as I wouldn't call gaining a resistance to a type "mediocre", even if the 8x Ice resistance isn't useful

This Walrein set fits best on offensive teams that need to consolidate Walrein's regular role of bulky attacker and Hidden Power's utility in checking Water-types. Attacking leads that can reliably prevent Stealth Rock or punish the opponent for attempting to use the move are very valuable to Walrein. Leafeon, Kingler, and Offensive Meganium all threaten to OHKO or set up on the Rock-types, while Clefairy is stuffed by Taunt from the likes of Persian, Grumpig, or Emolga. Glaceon overlaps many weaknesses with Walrein, but they can break almost any defensive core together. Hidden Power's ability to answer other Walrein is a valuable trait for when opposing Walrein inevitably try to check Glaceon. Walrein with Hidden Power Grass can be used on select offensive teams that lack a Grass-type, shoring up a potentially fatal weakness to Whiscash while not letting up momentum. Mention checks to foes that can overwhelm Walrein offensively

Thick Fat's effective resistance versus Fire is not commonly useful, but can help in playing around Simisear. Why EVs on defense and not HP? I think it would be great to explain that as it is not usual.

Hidden Power Electric is used to smack Water-types that resist Walrein's STAB attacks, 2HKOing Staryu while reliably 3HKOing opposing Walrein without Stealth Rock (don't need to specify this, it's just the default assumption unless you say otherwise).
